“Camsell” (2016) - 13 minutes

The Charles Camsell Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta has a long and tangled history. Most people know it today as an abandoned hospital site in the Inglewood Community, just west of downtown, but for the patients and staff who worked and lived there, the Camsell is much more. Connections to the Camsell Hospital stretch back over 70 years and cover most of western Canada and the arctic and are layered with the colonial history of a segregated healthcare system for Indigenous People. What do you really know about the Camsell?

Why doesn't the video actually discuss what happened here? They say it holds a lot of stong history, that it's controversial, it's got a darker history than other schools and the new development will honour how it impacted Indigenous people. Tell everyone what happened here!

I visited once (it was long closed by then - we went in 2012 or 2013) Knowing the heavy history beforehand, still didn't prepare me for the very eerie/heavy feeling it casts over you. They certainly shouldn't be turning it into an apartment building, though. A large memorial garden would make more sense at the very least...

Was it the best place? No Was it the worst place? No Should things have been done differently when patients passed away? Absolutely Should the patients been buried in unmarked graves? Definitely not But you can’t say it’s worse then other hospitals. Gray Nuns, UofA, Royal Alex are Erie too. Hospitals are erie and uncomfortable places. Hopefully this never happens again and with the changing times, hopefully we can better improve our current system to a functional level
