Thanks for sharing your experience. Working on exhaust/muffler pipes is often fairly challenging (my past experience). Right now I have a leak from the exhaust pipe, near the top where it connects to the manifold (it's not the gasket/flange), and I'm inclined to take it to a mechanic.

P0420 is probably the code that typically comes up if there is a leak between the exhaust manifold and the downstream oxygen sensor. As the outside pipe diameters of the new pipe is the same as the old one, a pipe sleeve/band would be a better option. Welding or press clamping becomes a problem in the future. Also, the new pipe will rust very soon. Spray painting with a high temperature paint would be helpful.

Always bring it to a shop to have it welded BUT make sure they know how to put the new flexible into the exact same position as the original, or the flanges won't fit and the new flexible won't last 6 months. It is true the clamps are useless, it will always leak and smell. Plus you want to keep your original catalytic converter because those cheap aftermarket ones are terrible and give check engine lights.

How'd it hold up after all these years? And why wouldn't you expand the pipe on the car (towards the muffler) to run new flex inside instead instead of out? Seems way more prone to leaks this way to me.

No it didn't rattle. It fixed the exhaust leak, but not the starting issue. The starting issue ended up being the fuel pump was failing. So it wasn't suppying enough fuel pressure to started the car.

Try a different type of gasket. It may need a donut gasket. Make sure the flanges are flat with each other.
