    I have seen similar behavior with my camponotus pensylvanicus colony. They also are not very active until feeding time and you can always tell when they're hungry when they start venturing out of the nest. I have posted videos on them on my channel.

  • @acrill5989

    Andre Morton Lasius Niger if you don't want to add much space and if you're fine with really small ants, or Messor Barbarus if you can afford lots of space for them and/or can't get many feeder insects for them. It's fine if you get other ants from the genuses Lasius and Messor, I'm sure you can find some in your area. But feel free to research other ants, I first thought that I'd pick a Camponotus species but I found a Messor queen, searched up a bit about them and found she's the perfect fit for me! You should also get the ants that are in your area, because it's much easier to keep native ants, you won't need things like heating mats or add much humidity to the nest.

    Hi, I would like to start keeping ants. Would you recommend a Camponotus species for a beginner? Or should i try a different species. I did some research but the opinions are so different. Some say their easy to keep, others don't.

  • @AmazingAnts

    @AmazingAnts

    6 жыл бұрын

    All in all they are easy to keep, BUT the big camponotus species need a long time to become a big colony and if they also do hibernation, it can take way longer. It can take 3 months from egg to worker. And if you start with a single queen you could have after 1 year like 25 ants.. Messor are my personal favorite starter species, they grow fast, have huge majors and they can be alone for some time due to their seeds in stock. If you want some action from the first day, I would recommend Messor sp. with 50 workers or more. Lasius are also pretty easy and nice to keep, they grow extremely fast but they are pretty small.

    I'd suggest Camponotus. Because of their large size, it's easier to contain them since they won't fit through any tiny nook and crevice. They're polygenous, having many different sizes and classes of workers. The ants have longer lifespans. It's easier to see what they're doing, and they grow slowly; meaning that every new success is that much better. Slow growth also means that it's easier to keep up with them. Easier to tell if they need more room, and far more time to prepare. So I'd prefer them. But then, slow growth means you'll have to be very patient as they develop, and it can take a year to even move them into a formicarium. So keep all that in mind. Lasius Niger is also a good starter species, smaller and faster-growing. Shorter life span and only have one size of worker. They also can't hurt you if they get on you, wheras Camponotus can bite and have formic acid.
