I guess those other campers don't realize bears don't run from loud noises, in fact they will usually investigate them. Bears will also try to rip trail cams off trees. They are extremely curious/nosy.

Cliff, you were killing me when you were blowing up your air mattress. I am at the end of a 9-week dispersed camping trip and was laying on a nearly flat sleeping mat in my tent as I watched this and that was after sleeping 4 hours last night:) But I did get to listen to elk and almost touch the stars here at 7, 400 feet. Love your videos. Come West!

If that was me Cliff and that bear was that close and had no mind to leave then I would pack up and sleep in the jeep! I would never be able to close my eyes in a tent knowing you had a visitor in the park. Loved the video! Thanks Cliff.

@Little PAW 1969 Thank you for jumping on my comment to Cliff. A bear is more likely to rip a tent then put the work into ripping open a vehicle at which point the driver can at least try to drive away unlike being killed in a tent. But you are way smarter than me!

We love Lyman Run! Our son has this ‘tradition’ of taking a dip in the lake every Memorial Day. Brrrrr! Lyman is just over the mountain from our Lodge. We have seen bears at our Lodge, raiding the bird feeders, getting into the trash bins, etc. We’ll be heading up there in January for skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, or whatever. I have been going to Potter County for over 30 years…..just love it there!

on Sept, 17th 2020 in Smokie Mountains, Tennessee,..a 43 year old man (Camping alone) was killed by a Black bear. When Rangers showed up, it was still eating the man and they shot & killed the Black Bear. Be careful my friend. The Bear was only 250 lbs, which is small. Our Bears here in Western, NY reach 700 lbs!

Did you notice how dark it gets earlier? The sky is light, but the depths of the hollows between the hills, gives you the illusion of darkness earlier. Potter is so quiet at night. For a real treat take a drive up the hill to Cherry Springs. Lots of great star gazing up there. I enjoy these videos. Thanks Cliff

Your trip brings back a lot of memories for me as I spent a lot of time at Lyman Run. We used to swim in that cold water and I caught quite a few Brook trout in that lake on the far side of the dam. I would not be surprised if you saw another bear as there are quite a number of bear in Potter county. I am sure you will like the ruins of the Austin Dam and it is a shame that you don't have more time to go to the Sinnemahoning in the lower part of the county below Austin as you may see some elk there. Thank you for sharing this as it makes me yearn to go back to "God's Country"!

Tent camping with air mattress, you may want to investigate something called a ground cloth. Adds a moisture barrier and puncture resistance for your tent bottom. They not expensive and well worth it.

I had to watch this! My first sleep-over in bear-country last month - for my 62nd birthday, alone 'cept for my dog and cat. Went up to Seneca Rocks in WV. The dumpsters they had in the camp were made of welded steel-plate with a heavy slide and catch to keep them closed - looked like you could toss a stick of dynamite in and it would stand the blast. Had a shell on my truck with hard-gear in the bed with water-jugs, my mattress and sleep-platform. Kept cooler of food in the cab, and refuse tied in a sack on the passenger floor. Cooked, ate, washed everything to remove food-smelling grease, and stowed it all behind the steel doors. Got a jar of tea, laid in my bed with the tailgate up and watched the sun set. Then I closed the hatch and locked it and fell asleep. Around midnight heard snuffling and a couple footfalls - but as soon as bear got a whiff of human and dog through the tailgate seam, with no strong scent of food - it shuffled off. Was in the 30s by morning, made a pot of coffee in the dark, lit my pipe, and watched the sun rise over the eastern ridge. Was feeling good being in the shell that night, though - don't think I'd feel comfortable in a nylon tent on the ground.

Hi Cliff, a great tip when you're camping with an air mattress is to put a folded piece of bubble-wrap underneath the size of the bed, that way if there are pieces of glass or sharp stones you don't notice then there is less chance of a puncture 😉. The person who drew that picture is obviously very talented, it's beautiful. So cool that a bear showed up, although I don't think he was that welcome he didn't seem to care much either way what people thought, I wonder if he smelled your honey waffles when you opened the pack 😜. It was a lovely little campground though and you seemed to have got the best spot as it had everything you would need. Thank you for sharing your camping experiences with us, Intex is a great brand for inflatable beds etc and the tent was well designed and looked really big actually, although they should have labelled it a 2 man. I didn't know you could get those car power inverters, I will have to look into that. Stay safe and well, much love. xx💖

Really nice tent upgrade. You will sleep nicely on that air mattress. You can add a sleeping bag to it in cooler weather. You can set the wafer on top of a hot cup of coffee. It will make it gooey. Baked beans & jerky. Perfect campsite dinner. That bear may have to be relocated. Does that type of bear grow larger? That dumpster should probably be relocated as well.

It's interesting to see the modern convenience of using the vehicles outlet. The gifts, that I'm pretty sure we all look forward to you receiving were all nice. I'm really surprised the park ranger did not come and deal with the bear....he seemed to be food-conditioned and unafraid of people....this is a recipe for disaster. In Montana, he would be trapped and relocated, and if that didn't keep him away, then most likely ...well...extinguished. your former student has such amazing artistic talent...I've seen other examples of their work...just wonderful! Cliff, tips for your you. 1 get a ground cloth, it should be slightly smaller than the foot print of the tent. Allows rain to run off the tent, not under it. And it will keep your tent cleaner. If you camp with bears, change out of anything you cooked in. And never have any kind of food in your ⛺. Should of pushed on over to hearts content.

That 🐻 bear is very familiar with humans and add the fact that it knows there is food there in that campground. It's not going to be afraid to come into it and regular basis. They should call the park ranger or the game warden to get it removed and relocated.

I love all your videos, but your camping ones are some of my favs! Always so peaceful and a way to "get away" while being in this pandemic lockdown.

Nice video Cliff. Cool wildlife. I'm not afraid of bears. One crossed my path when I was 1 in my grandparents lawn about -20 feet away. 😂 I still remember that. Amazing the things we remember. I remember my grandmother telling me to stand still. I wish they wouldn't yell at it. I had one a little smaller than that in my lawn last summer. 😊 I did tell at it to keep it out of the road. I said "Boo Boo you can't come this way!" Better to bang a pot or something. 😂 Bears in England? What do you think the Royal Guards hats are made of?😂

Jerky, waffles and honey....it's wonder the strolling bear didn't drop by your table while you were having coffee with a "Hi ya human. You know we critters own these woods and those things you got there smell real nice partner. I'll just help myself, you keep playing with the weird flat thing." Sometimes they break into vehicles if they smell food inside, so it's a good thing your girl was intact in the morning. They can be real pests once they get used to people. That one is definitely accustomed to people trying to chase him/her off. They can yell all day, but bear not having any of it. He/she knows there's easy food, people will eventually stop and if it waits it might get lucky. Apparently bear bangers or firing a weapon to scare it off is not allowed or possible in the situation. Some places are so bad they have to call in pros who will shoot persistent problem bears near homes with harmless rubber bullets, they sting like crazy but don't damage the animal. Of course, they are pros so they know where to aim. Wonder what's worse the trains or a hungry bear having it out with the other campers all night.

@Mary H Yes. Maybe it happened at that end spot because his/her nose would have picked up Cliff's goodies and diner. It's odd the bear stayed there so long rather than go to the dumpster.
