Camping Hammocks - My Top Choices. The Hammocks I Use for Canoe Trips, Hiking and Bikepacking Trips.

In this video, I will be going through the pros and cons of the various hammocks that I use for canoe trips, backpacking, bushcraft camps and camping trips - from the basic models through to the top end sophisticated hammocks with full bug nets, storage and adjustable foot boxes and even a very clever lay-flat system.
I love hammock camping, the gentle sway, the higher vantage point, being off the cold damp ground and the feeling of being cradled as I drift off to sleep. In the summer, you can take full advantage of that shady breeze and in the winter you can nestle down into your cocoon using a top quilt and under quilt to keep snug. A camping solution for all year round - all you need is a couple of trees.
With so many options out there and massively varying price tags, it can be difficult to know what is good and what is not - nobody wants to feel ripped off, so hopefully, this video will help answer some questions and show you a few options that I use and can genuinely recommend.
I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

I am still in love with my 15-16 year old Hennessy Hammock. I bought the same model with the velcro entrance at the bottom.. I then sent it from Denmark over to the US to a nice & sweet lady Grandma, who made Hammock UPGRADES, like zippers, pockets/bags, repairs, etc. I got two "triple" zippers sewn in. So I can open it on both sides, and/or zip the "whole mosquito net" off and down in a pocket at the foot end.💪🏼✅Love my Henness❣

I invested in a DD superlight jungle hammock and superlight tarp, a while back. I had to save up, because they were not cheap, for me. It's a tent, it's a hammock and it's a bloody marvellous set-up! Light enough to carry; set up in no time and you sleep like the innocent. For many years I slept in second hand tents, bivi bags and anything I could cobble together, beg or borrow (I baulked at stealing). There was a time, in my youth, when I could carry the kitchen sink and sleep on a bit of foam - happy days! If I had waited until I could have afforded the 'Gucci' kit, I'd have wasted 30 years of my life. I'm a 'mature' adult, now and the years catch up, so sadly, I need a bit comfort. Youth is priceless!

Having begun watching many outdoor gear videos and quickly quitting because the person took too long getting to any point whatsoever. Hammock PARTY with Simon in the woods!!!!! Nice video on hammocks - you always do good mate on explaining things.👍 Everyone has their favorite hammock like you said. I am a side sleeper. Since I watched your first hammock video post a couple years back - I have tried many hammocks from the cheapest to some of the most well known top cottage industry makers and slept fairly well in the more specialized longer ones diagonally. But when I bit the bullet last year and got a AMOK, well game changer for me - I now can sleep on my side and back and with a great very flat lay for me. And now only LOUD noises and the occasionally 'old man pee needed' get me up, not cramps and aches. I love my Dutchware, I love my GO2 and as I said I slept fairly well in them - key word slept - I now pretty much do the AMOK whenever I can do hammocking. Once you got the setup down, not really hard, I can get it up and ready in less than 10 minutes when I use my air pump (I know cheating - but I use my age as an excuse) - I did four or five nights a year on average in my gathered end hammocks 3 years ago, I did 10 or 12 this last 8 months even in some of our bitter cold spells and the reason it wasn't more than that was because of my herniated disk at this time not allowing me to walk much - but the AMOK design configuration allowed me to 'hang' on my side with no pressure on my lower spine, which even the 12 foot special ordered gathered end hammock I used mostly before, would not take off all the pressure - so thus way more comfortable using the AMOK and could do that in my backyard which I am doing a lot. I am not abandoning my older hammocks for occasional use IF lightweight is really needed - but as you can tell I am a believer in AMOK for me to get a great night sleep and keep the pain at bay. PROS = just about everything CONS = it is a BIG investment for those whose budget is like mine, but I know now it was definitely worth it big time for me. AND their support people are absolutely some of the best in the world. Thanks for taking the time to take us along with you and explaining things. ATB

Great video Simon, that Amuk looks fascinating. I originally got a simple Ozark hammock off of Amazon - it’s single layer, but has a bug net and an internal elastic line which keeps the net suspended and enables one of Ginge’s hammock storage pockets to be suspended from. I have a DD under blanket too. I may upgrade at some point, but at the moment don’t get to use it enough to warrant it.

Great presentation. I’ve got an Amok and really like it. It’s not my lightest hammock but it’s my deluxe sleeper. After spending a few nights in it I decided it was worth the weight especially when going out to island camp with my canoe. The only drawback was the first time trying to get a rain fly over it but I made one that does the job. At this point I’m thinking of modifying that rain fly to allow a tent stove for hot tenting so I can use it in added comfort during the winter.

That sounds amazing! You should post a video of the process (or maybe a tour once it's done?)

One wind has cheapish hot tent tarps, but I seriously recommend you investigate hot tents. It’s mostly a social media fad. Takes a lot of time to setup, gather firewood, and you need to keep stoking the stove while being careful not to burn yourself (which honestly isn’t easy)… much easier to actually enclose yourself in a tarp like the superfly or the onewind tsrp with doors, and bring extra insulation. Less weight in the end, less time to setup, and you can leave it behind in hotter trips. I love wood stoves, but I can almost guarantee you will regret it… turns what could be a 5 minute setup into a 20 min setup plus 1 h of gathering and processing firewood. I cook on a wood stove as a bikepacker and bicycle tourer, and it can be painstaking sometimes. It takes me no more than 10 minutes to gather and process enough to cook a full meal, and I have been tired enough to procrastinate it and just eat raw, or not eat at all… on the positive side, I usually wake up stsrving, get up immediately to gather wood, cook breakfast and lunch all at once while my sleeping bag and tarp dry up from condensation.

Having used a fair bunch of hammocks over the years, I have to say the Warbonnet Eldorado is my favourite, especially when coupled with their wookie under-quilt and super tarp. Thanks for the demo on all your hammocks - very useful! 👍

Nice kit. I own the original DD Camping Hammock, DD 3x3 tarp and DD Travel Hammock. All brand new and unused. I still like the Travel Hammock best. Im an old guy and im from the school of 2 is 1 and 1is none. So i like the notion of it being both a hammock and a tent, of which i cannot recall many hammock manufacturers employing. Nice to see the amok people pushing the envelope though, even if it does look a bit drafty in gale force. Love the chair aspect of it and the bug net fixture. Seemed to 'sway' a helluva lot i must say, and that tarp pattern...oooh!! Glad that video popped up. Enjoyed it sir, thank you

A hammock life for me ! Love my hammock, I hook mine up to my porch post when I’m not in the woods and I get to camp at any giving time of the year. I live in the country on a 17 acre farm so it’s like being in the woods anyway, a lot of wild life out here. Had a skunk visit me on the back porch once, didn’t turn out very well🤢🤮 skunk 1 - man 0 . Thanks for the video Simon , take care.
