Camping Food, DIY boil in the bag meals

Welcome to AW Services and a new video.
In this video, I share my DIY camping boil in a bag meal idea.
As mentioned within my video, I'm not a fan of cooking ingredient based meals and making a mess with scorched food in pots and pans and having to spend ages scrubbing my trusty aluminium Trangia stove pots.
As a solo camper, it's a waste of time and space taking cool boxes full of ingredient components to create a simple meal.
This is where the goodness of home cooking comes into it's own, Take your meals with you in a heat sealed mylar pouch so the freshness and nutritional qualities are locked in.
I plan to make my fresh cooked meals 2/3 days prior to going camping and store them within the fridge until I leave.
meals that I enjoy and are similar to the civilian retail based Wayfarer meals
Beans & Bacon
Burgers & Beans
All Day Breakfast
Chicken Curry
Beef Stew & Dumplings
Mince Beef & Potatoes
Apple Crumble
Sliced Pear
Sticky Toffee Pudding
Syrup Sponge
Chocolate Sponge Pudding
all of the above can safely be reheated by the means of placing the sealed pouches into boiling water for around 8-10 minutes
all meals are fully cooked at the time of production, and sealing them will keep them fresh & safe for consumption
Note: This video and its subject matter isn't something for long-term preppers or long-time food storage.
All I am doing is making meals to take away for a weekend camp or a few days at the maximum.
I am fully aware of food handling and food safety and know that salt is a crude form of food preservative, and precooked meats are safe for a short-term period.
I've read the ingredients of many British army and wayfarer ration packs to recognise the methods they adopt for long-term food storage. However, that isn't something I'm giving away here.
Think camping thing recreation and weekends

Many thanks for your support and for watching my video. Any meals that contain salt and are pre-cooked beforehand and exceed 70 degrees at the time of cooking should safely last a week. The only difference between diy civi boil in the bag meals and military issue is that they don't contain tons of stabilisers, preservatives, etc.

Just starting to look into this idea myself, so forgive my ignorance. How many days camping would it last in the backpack? Should the food be heated (pasteurised) in the bag?

Any food that's been pre-cooked as part of it's preparation and the usual seasoning like salt helps keep the food fresh as it's a natural preservative. Same goes with sugar in desserts. Also providing the meals are not in direct contact with blazing sunshine you'll have no issues with shelf life while out and about. For winter camping, bug out, expeditions etc the cold weather is just one big fridge. British army Ration packs / MRE are normally dated with 3 years and the same for the civilian brand of wayfarer meals. I've had meals this summer last over a week in 35c or 95f and no issues at all. A top tip is to over season meals or add more sauces as it will never taste fully like a home cooked meal. There's nothing like a silly question mate. Happy to help

great video. Is there a rule of thumb about how full the bags can be? I assume there needs to be some room for expansion when cooking??

I usually fill them half way and push out any air prior to sealing. They don't ever balloon up when boiling so ensuring they are over filled and bulging helps with storage space

do they need to be heat sealed? would the zip lock seal o its own keep the food fresh if you prepped them within a week of a camping trip? Also what do you use to heat seal them?

I heat seal mine so they won't leak or pop open accidentally if I press my rucksack or fall on it. A heat sealer is cheap and the best method as not all food is flat and you'll most likely pop on the seal with air pressure in the bag
