Camping and Overlanding in the Buttermilk Range

Overlanding and camping in the Buttermilk mountains outside Bishop, CA. Included are GPS coordinates for several worthwhile camp spots at elevations from 4,000 feet to almost 9,500 feet. Beautiful area in summer and Fall, when the colors on the trees are changing. Stopping at Antelope Valley Overland Supply in Lancaster was a great bonus. Not sponsored by them, but I do shop there and have had work done by them.

FYI There’s no “Buttermilk Range” it’s just called the Buttermilks. The area is part of the Sierra Nevada Range. When visiting my backyard would you please stay on trail, thanks! Great video!

Hats off to you for showing the exact location. I know it can be a double edged sword, but too many times people want to keep "secret" places that are not really secret. This is a great incentive to get people to go out and explore. And that's the whole point of these videos. Excellent work. But let's all remember to treat these areas with care and respect every time we go out and visit them!

Thank you. 🙏 I share similar logic, though I must admit, I often do not end up sharing locations in my videos. Not because of a desire to keep it a secret (not much of a secret when everyone can find location on Google Earth, after all!), but due to the added time it takes when editing videos. Might not seem like it takes much extra time, but every video takes between 6-8 hours to edit and produce, so adding another 30-60 minutes into that mix just gets cut. 😉 Still, when folks reach out, it’s easy enough to share coordinates. And 100% agree with folks needing to care for our nature spaces. 👍👍

@@marcusfieldfield4069 double check that the road up to the Buttermilks camping spots is actually open. It was closed 3 weeks ago due to water damage from the winter and may not be reopened yet. You can get a ways up there, but not to the top from the Buttermilks videos I posted. Still a nice drive, however, with beautiful views back out over Bishop and the valley.

@@marcusfieldfield4069 you won’t see the dicey bits. 😉 They’re way beyond the road blocks the forest service have in place. Still, miles to explore before reaching the block, but worth being aware that you may be exploring a dead end.

Thanks for this great video, I've been curious about Buttermilk Road but I can't attempt it in my vehicle. Since everything is snowed in this season I'm considering car camping in one of the campgrounds further up 168, then hiking the entire Buttermilk Road for something different until late summer when hiking trails deeper in the interior are passable. Looks like you turned around and came back the way you went in instead of exiting near Aspendell, am I correct? I thought on the far end of the loop there's a spine to drive along until you get back down to 168.

We love that entire area. So much beauty! And you are correct. This trip was an in-out via the same route. We have done other routes up there that we’re just big loops. Previously, there were several spots that required 4 wheel drive AND some clearance to easily negotiate. Now, after the rain, and now the snow and run off, I can only imagine how much it’s changed!

I get why folks don’t share (want to keep it secret, want to make money from the info, want to protect the area, etc), but anyone can find these spots. Why not just be helpful to others? Now, I may not share everywhere I go, but honestly, that’s because editing these videos takes about 12-14 hours of my time, and doing a pass to add coordinates only adds more time to that investment. (And frankly, sometimes I simply forget with all the rest of the work. 😉) But, I’ll try to remember to include coordinates when I can. 👍👍

I'll be honest, I'm pretty torn on the coordinate sharing. In theory, sharing is caring and its awesome but there are animals out there who leave their poops and tp next to a fire ring and use the firepit as a trashcan and all that. Those people don't deserve to have such easy access to this knowledge. Yes anyone can explore it on their own BUT the people who'll run that extra mile to research, typically possess a level of commitment to this lifestyle and respect the land. Sorry to sound bitter but I've come across too much shit and trash in beautiful campsites and am over it. A little challenge and mystery around our shared hobby is a good thing.

Doesn’t sound bitter at all! In fact, when I made this video, I waffled on this exact point - for the exact reasons you noted - for 3 days. I’ve had people thank me for sharing, and I’ve had people disagree with my choice. And while I respect all feedback, I don’t typically add the coordinates now. I’m happy if a random person reaches out and asks if I’ll share them. Easy enough to grab them from Gaia and share via DMs. And I dislike feeling like I need to be the police of anything, but I also kinda feel like we all need to be protecting areas. 👍
