I’ve been camping my whole life and I’m also a camping and drumming KZreadr. Camping is amazing and my favourite hobby embrace the beauty and the joy of it all. There’s nothing to be afraid of. We have bears here in Canada that’s the only thing I ever worry about but always take proper precautions to make sure they don’t come to my campsite!

Well done you I have been wild camping since 1980 you cannot beat it quick tip for some who may need it. If you are worried about silly noises in the night I take a small radio and listen to that through the night on low volume it cancels out all the wild animals scuffles you hear.

@summitwithsophie I would hold back if I was you definitely. You need to run with the camping thing. Honestly. It will be easy for you. Find a safe place where you can park your car very near. You'll feel comfortable then. It's simple you go out cook a different meal each time. Do things wrong and right people will love it. Still be a little afraid when outside. 😁👍 It's new, so that's normal. Blokes love watching this kind of thing. Have a look Kent Survival. People go nuts for it. Goes out to a woods, he's even said his van is near. If you get afraid you jump in your car. He cooks something, chops some wood. You are on to something. Well worth a try. A Welsh bloke very recently started Wild About Wales. Have a look at how quickly he got going. You then have bothys. It similar to camping. I've been to a few, have a look at how people watch them compared to my other things. You can always roll out the holiday vid later. Go for it! Crazy camping girl. 😁 It works well if you go on your own. Have a good holiday. I will wait and watch you in a tent. Mistakes are good when out.😉👋

My take on locations: of course the safest is probably with other families around. But camping alone, I think it's wise to get off the road or trail or camping area. In other words, be invisible. If I was camping on the Appalachian trail for instance, I wouldn't stay at the shelter unless some other trail hikers were there. I'd go into the woods and become invisible, dull colors, no lights after dark. Anyone looking to do harm is looking for easy access. They aren't scouring the woods in the dark.

Brava! I began soloing about six years ago (though I still enjoy company occasionally, with one or the other of my two sons-in-law). When Covid shut everything down, I spent 38 nights in the forest, 35 solo (and this was before I retired). I soon became confident in my ability to hang the hammock, the tarp, gather firewood and make a sustaining fire. I almost miss the anxiety now, because I’m so comfortable in the forest alone. Two weeks ago, I awoke at 5 a.m., because the wind had blown my new tarp off (it had some plastic thingies that came loose), so I tied bowline knots and taut line hitches, and slept until 7:15 a.m. If the plastic thingies hadn’t come loose, I would have slept uninterrupted through the night, and I now sleep as comfortably (or moreso) than I do at home in my own bed. I’ll be 70 in November, so I’m not young or strong, but I am reasonably competent, and therefore comfortable. I hope you have many more pleasant evenings. Be safe, and enjoy the forest!

My 'worst' wild camp was in the Pyrenees in 2015, it was dark, raining hard and foggy and I found a flat area of grass by the side of a narrow farm road. It rained all night and was still raining in the morning. At dawn, I heard grunting, and at first thought it was wild boar, but when I opened my tent I saw a large white domesticated sow in front of me. I grabbed my hiking stick and jumped out of my tent, to find four others who all tried to get in my tent. I shouted, swore at them, poked them with my stick, and it took about 20 minutes before they left. They managed to demolish everything, and everything was wet, including me. I looked around and discovered that in the darkness and rain I had camped in the middle of an open range pig area, there were pigs everywhere! I then found out the worst thing about camping, trying to dress with wet clothing on a wet body, just like wearing a suit of Sellotape!

Very well done! I face the same fears. I have bears and coyotes where I live and I don't fear those, however I do fear people to some degree. Even the thoughts of someone trying to scare me for the fun of it keeps me from solo camping. I see some KZreadrs go through that on trips and it makes me so angry that people would just want to scare another person for fun. :( I think though, your chances of running into that serial killer would probably have been more likely at the campground rather than the mountains. I think they realize themselves that it is too much work to hike the mountain, then try to find the right person to do their serial killer thing with. lol Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your night out. I am sure that the peacock would have opened a great big can of whoop arse on anyone that dared come near your tent. haha!

An inspirational offering to so many Sophie, including me......bloody brilliant 🏅 I understand how it feels to confront the self-doubt and often unwarranted fears of venturing out alone, even though I know I have the skills, knowledge and experience of navigation and being in the outdoors to succeed. The fear soon disappears when you are underway and little boosts to our confidence, such as cooking a warming and satisfying meal without a drama, having the shelter of a tent and a warm, dry sleeping bag etc give us back control and banish the fear, albeit temporarily. Embrace the fear as a friend who is using tough love to spur you on to greater things. I look forward to seeing more.....

The sounds of nature are amplified at night mice sound like bears trying to get into your tent to eat your food . Deer will pass by foxes can be curious so can cows heavy breathing followed by licking duw from your tent . Make sure you camp on the right side of a drystone wall away from cattle enclosures especially with young The wilderness is often very noisy owls all night hooting the birds start at first light wind ratting your tent airplanes flying over every ½ an hour cars in the valley below and Voices carried on the wind from nearby villages . Very little to be afraid of other than your own imagination . Keep food in sealed container keep your light low and discreet and you will be left alone . Ear plugs are recommended .the most frightening thing that will chase you off the mountains and moorland will be midges

Yeahhhh, that would definitely scare me! I saw some women on Facebook asking for safety advice for the Appalachian Trail and I was amazed that all the comments were just talking about skinwalkers rather than bears!!! Found it very disturbing 😂😂😂😂😂

Good job the peacock was there to protect you, because with the sound of the water, you wouldn't have heard a serial killer creeping up on you.

IMO I would think you'd have LESS of a chance of meeting a (human) predator miles out in the woods vs a local campground like this. A serial killer would have to be pretty dedicated to hike 10 hours out into the woods just to maybe see someone

I don't think it's just your opinion, I think it's probably a fact 🤣 unfortunately fears aren't rational 🥲 pretty unlikely to be murdered either way I hope 😉

You pray to Jesus to give you a good sleep and he will also uphold you with his mighty hand. Killers and wild animals are real. GOD is your first defense. Insurance is nothing just to pay any damages. Enjoy camping. JESUS LOVES YOU
