When I was a kid, I loved the idea of hunting. Not killing animals, but I loved the idea of going out into the woods and just see stuff. It wasn't until I was much older when a friend of mine suggested an idea that she loves to do: Nature photography! Like she goes out into the woods with a camera. Find a nice secluded spot and just snap photos of the wild bears and deers and all as they appear. I have seen photos, they look amazing! I haven't done it myself, but it would be a good alternative to hunting. :)

Enjoyed hearing Dan's Klondike experience. I too went to a couple of Klondikes ("Klondike Derbies", formally). I wrote an essay about it in high school that I titled, "Hell Frozen Over", which should give an idea about what a pleasant experience those campouts were. On one of them, I remember setting up my tent on the snow - there wasn't really a choice since it was a few feet deep and I couldn't set up on earth anywhere - and during the night, it rained, and also my body heat started melting the snow which then trickled into my tent and got half of my sleeping bag soaked. I moved over into a corner of the tent that was slightly higher than the rest (where my body heat hadn't melted the underlying snow yet) and tried to wrap the driest parts of my sleeping bag around me. After lying there shivering for hours, I finally gave up. I rebuilt the campfire and stood by it, shivering but somewhat less miserable from about 3:00 am until morning. Good times on the Klondike! I DO still like camping though. Just not in the snow.

Considering Brandon's affinity to water, I think he would love an overnight on the San Juan. The upper canyon is so scenic, the guides do everything for you and you could totally set up and write for hours. I've had the opportunity to do the trip quite a few times and sitting at the banks is amazing.

I think the story idea where your childhood imaginary friend helps protect your mind from invasion just needs a little Star Trek. For example, imagine Bing Bong from Inside Out showing up to help Captain Picard get off the Planet Kataan in the TNG episode, The Inner Light, or breaking O'Brian out of the prison on Argratha in the DS9 episode, Hard Time.

When I was in the Boy Scouts (and Civil Air Patrol) we used surplus Army shelter halves. For part of that time, I lived in Germany, so much of the time was camping in cold rain. Where we proved that canvas tents are, shall we say, "semi-permeable". They're also heavy to haul around and tiny for two people. But they're durable and they're warm(er) in the snow. When my son was in Boy Scouts (also an Eagle), they used more modern tents that were great in most weather, but they were fragile. And they didn't hold heat anywhere near as well. During that period, I used to tell him, "You'll either have a great time or you'll have stories you can tell for the rest of your life." He has a robust collection. 8-) After all of that, the only reason I would camp these days is if there were just no way to get to where I want to go on a day hike or by vehicle.

Wow. Hearing Brandon describing Wood Badge in America. In the UK it's just... what you get when you finish Leader training. With exciting things like "how to plan a program", or "safeguarding". Also, I've never in 20 years camped somewhere that didn't have a shower. Because you're right, that's icky.

When I was in Boy Scouts in the 90's, my troop seems to just have wanted us to suffer. I later asked other people what they did, and learned that they shot bows and arrows, played board games, could read books, watched movies, shot guns...basically did fun stuff. Meanwhile, our leaders made us work and get badges. Thus, I am with Brandon. Camping is when the hotel hasn't hosted royalty.

A lot of my favorite trips have been excursions with school, most of which had a strong camping part. We have so many diverse locations and climates here in Colombia, that it's great. One of my favorites was the trip to the nevados where we went from the Páramo, walked all the way to the snow border at the Santa Isabel, and then all the way down the mountain to about 2000m above sea level, so already hot climate. It was a very long walk on complicated terrain each day, but it was gorgeous.

I realize this might not be a discussion we get in today’s polarized atmosphere, but I’d love to hear Dan discuss that line about socialism further, particularly in light of a past church president’s admonitions against that and communism. But that delves deep into both religion and politics, which doesn’t tend to be this podcast’s vibe, so I’ll just leave it as a voiced wish. Great stuff as always guys 👍

I love being out in nature and I always think I'm going to enjoy camping. To some extent I do, but just driving to a campsite and pitching a tent has never been my style, hiking has always been part of the camping experience for me. But either I go alone, in which case I get bored because I'm alone, and because I'm alone I have to keep to easier trails closer to society and within cell service and stuff since I don't have any fancy red equipment. Or I go hiking with other people, in which case I'm mostly alone anyway, only then I'll have to hear people complaining about me moving to fast or too slow every time we stop.

My dad always had korean era military cots to sleep on and a big military style canvase tent that he could set them up in when not using the homemade camper on the back of our love truck with matresses to sleep in. A great sleeping bag helps to especially during winter camp. I was almos always the one who got up early to start a fire also especially during winter camp in the mountains.

I did the scouting thing (though not with the BSA, interestingly enough) and for some reason I usually looked forward to the camping trips ... and then was always miserable during it. I, too, had a horrible time sleeping in a tent. Toss and turn for 4 or 5 hours, actually manage to sleep for maybe two hours. Camp food is often not the greatest. And then one time, finish breakfast, all pile into the leader's truck for the 1 1/2 hour drive back home ... and vomit all over it. Yuck! Loved the rest of the experience, really should not have been a fan of the camping, though.
