Campfire Audio Ponderosa and Supermoon impressions | Chromatic Series

Ғылым және технология

Campfire Audio has been busy over the past year, adding new additions to their lineup with Trifecta, Solaris Stellar Horizons, and the Andromeda Emerald Sea. Now, the IEM brand from Portland scales things back with their Chromatic Series. Has Campfire gotten back to their roots, or have they crafted something entirely new?

Went to my local headphone store (shout out for Audio 46 in midtown Manhattan, great guys, awesome service) with my A&K SR35, looking to upgrade from my Westone Mach 60's, and got to audition the Moon Rover, Andromeda Emerald Sea, the Bonneville and the Supermoon. I honestly went to the store thinking I was going to make the Andromedas mine that day. My audition tracks were Genesis "Entangled", Widespread Panic "Surprise Valley", Sophie B Hawkins "Don't stop swaying" and Sara K "Stars", all hi-res flac or DSD. The Bonneville, Moon River and Andromeda were all superb. More detailed than I was used to with the Westones, deeper but still well controlled bass, airy female vocals, warm mids, not a hint of sibilance in the highs, very very good indeed. But. Then I got to the Supermoons. Oh. My. God. And that's actually what I said, out loud, in the store. Absolutely blown away. The first 1 minute of Sara K "Stars" gave me full body goosebumps the size of a small family car. The velvety nature of Sara's voice caressed my earholes in a way that made me think that the price of the IEM's must be a typo. The BLACKNESS of the silence between notes was so absolute, beautiful DEEP bass. There was no contest for my ears. I coupled the IEM's with Spinfit CP145 in large and could not be happier with my purchase. Leaving the store, I felt like a thief for the price I paid.

How would you say the Supermoon compares to other high end planar IEM’s like the Audeze Euclid? I know you mentioned in the video it’s your favourite Planar IEM, but I know there isn’t much high end competition so I wasn’t sure if the Euclid was included in this comment. Thanks!

The Euclids are absolutely dead neutral...They're the IEM equal to the Sennheiser HD 600. The Supermoons I've found to be on the fun side of neutral, so slightly tweaked with a boost in the bass and the mids, not fatiguing treble and a slow roll off. But planar magnetics in general take to EQ incredibly well, so you don't really have to worry about their stock sound. If you want to, you can add a +6db or even +12db to the low end frequencies and then they become some unbelievably bass thumping headphones, with zero distortion.

Thanks for the audio. How was the fit and comfort of these unit? The size looks daunting. Are they easy to insert?

Yes - they're not as big as they look, and there was quite a bit of science that went into the shape of the shells. They're actually based on a composite of every ear in Campfire Audio's custom IEM database.

what's best balance IEM with big soundstage, natural thick texture bass, up close vocals and smooth extended highs? any recommendation under 2000$? Thanks

Hey, so if you're specifically for balanced armature based IEMs, it sounds like Ponderosa is exactly what you're looking for. Otherwise the Thieaudio Monarch MK3 might also be a good choice or the 64 Audio U4s. I heard the new Campfire Bonneville at CanJam, and that also sounds like it would fit your description really well.

    What about Bonneville?

Hey there! This is Matthew responding - We haven't gotten our hands on Cascara and Bonneville (yet), but I got a chance to listen to Bonneville at CanJam Socal, and was thoroughly impressed by what Campfire was able to do with that IEM! Great top end sparkle, very good bass presentation, and quite a lush midrange, which I wasn't really expecting. It's a much more resolving IEM than I figured it would be. Soundstage (from my memory and 10 minute listening session) was a bit closed in in comparison to other IEMs of Campfire, but had good separation and space in between instruments. I'd say, for my taste and preferred sound signature, it's my favorite in the chromatic series, beating out Supermoon for the best in the lineup!

@@BloomAudiowhen you review Bonneville (hopefully this month 🙏), can you please compare it to Tia Trio ? I'm really on the fence between these two IEMs (considering that a used Tia Trio is almost the same price as a new Bonneville) 🙏

@@omoveja8185 We'll do our best. We don't currently have a Tia Trio demo or open box on hand, so we'll have to get our hands on one to make that comparison.

But it's v.hard to use planar h/phones outside, hence planar iem's, still liking my S12 pro's outside. Seem's the Super moon would be the pinnacle.
