Brilliant Achievement - would like a longer video with more details - sealing the EPS inside the GF really good idea, precisely how did you reinforce and cut the hole? - how have your insurers responded to this modification :)

I was about to say that a vast majority of people doing their own conversion get very anxious when cutting a small hole for, say, an extraction fan ... This guy practically cuts his entire roof off. Just imagine the consequences of screwing this up ... Good job, Buddy.

Just measured the van roof and made the edge finish in the drip channel which runs around the courigateed area of the roof, same curvature ad origonal.

hi Richard, great project! you inspired me to make a roof for my own van. there are a lot of various fiberglass fabrics on the market. Could you tell me which one you used or can you recommend something for the construction to be light but stiff and strong? thanks in advance - Simon

How does she drive? Any additional road noise or air whistles? Great to see someone doing this. Most of the self conversions I've found are using old westy pop tops ...but those cost a pretty penny😁.

Great idea. But I am wondering if it affects the structural integrity/stiffness of the van. If you go up the curb slowly with only one of the four wheels do you hear any contortion noises coming from the chassis? I would like to raise the roof of a small van such as a VW transporter but I am afraid it might affect the stiffness of the chassis.

I would say it wont affect the chassis that much if the vehicle has a frame if its unibody I would not feel safe with cutting the roof of any unibody without reinforcing it throughly but if you have a full frame chassis to start with the only integrity loss would be roof strength in a roll over

I know this is old, but I bet the corner bracing bent sheet metal offsets the loss of the ribs quite a bit. Most of the pro installs use a welded rectangle as an interior structural frame and don't have corner bracing. Looks well thought out.

Hi Richard. I watched your NV200 conversion video and that led me here. I was hoping to see the design and construction of the frame to the pop up roof. I would like to make a roof like this for an NV200 but doesn't cutting the roof out weaken the structure of the vehicle? At 3:13 where you comment about using self-tapping screws is the purpose of that 'frame' simply to allow the fixing of the roof or does it also strengthen? Is it made of steel or aluminium? Thanks

I made a two layer 90 degree steel section for each side attached with lots of self tappers the front and back had similar with diagonal braces to the side sections. Sorry no pictures may have drawings on CAD of sides could email. Richard Cresswell sculptor will find.

What did you use to support the roof, when it was finished also how do you attach the fabric to the roof and van?

  • @richardcresswell7096

I fabricated box sections to run down the sides about 120 mm X 100 and then curves ones to run across each end which all booked together then in , the edges of the roof opening we turned up to form a lip to stop water running under the roof and these were joined by flanges on the top of all the stiffeners the fabric is attached to these with an edge seal which also deals against the underside of the roof. Just listed this van on what as I will soon be getting a Peugeot boxer for my next project.

Why did you use epoxy? Very expensive. I've been building boats as well as a patternmaker (plugs) and one off mouldmaking for architectural mouldings for over 40 years. I'd have made your mould using melamine faced chipboard and used polyester resin.

The whole idea wah to add nothing to the height of the van I think i managed 1cm so we can still get in public car parks with a 2 metre barrier, just twanks the flexible areiel.

The longitudinal ones are two baisisally L shaped pieces of 1.5mm folded to form a box section with elongated flanges one pointing up to attach to the flame formed around the new hole and one facing outwards attached to the existing small box form in the van roof these were folded up by a local engineering firm, the front and rear were heavy steel tube with a slight curve to suit the roof profile with similar flanges welded feeding up and back to the existing van roof stiffeners.
