Camp Chef Outdoor Oven review

Review of the Camp Chef Outdoor Oven (model COVEN-3). This is a propane powered unit that includes two 7500 BTU stove top burners and the 3000 BTU oven. It came with a screw-on propane regulator compatible with 1-lb propane bottles, but with additional accessories can also be hooked up to larger propane tanks.
I got it on sale for $169.00 on Amazon (Dec 2022). It's often listed for $250 or more, so watch for sales. Carry bag was $75 from Cal Ranch store.

This is the same oven that I use in my house for baking, Today I plan on making brownies, If someone is trying to go off the grid or just nearly off the grid having a gas oven / or gas cook top is a big help. Baking or making coffee is no problem when the power is out.

I love my camp chef oven. I haven't used it in a few years, but I will be using it again soon. I'll use it in a small cabin if the power goes out and I can't use my toster oven/air fryer, microwave, and electric burner. I found if I placed 2 small cast iron trivet type hot plates on the very bottom oven rack, it helps keep the heat in the oven, when you open the door to check your food. I can't wait to start using it again!

The temperature gauge should be placed in about the middle of the stove to get an accurate reading instead of in the top corner

I have had this for a few years. The cooktop doesn't lower enough to not burn eggs. Any idea if there's an adjustment to get the flame lower?

The overn is beautifully finished but I was very disappointed with the device. The burners could not withstand wind and the flame burned regularly in the burner. There were no flames outside the burner. (Dangerous) The windshields are almost useless for keeping the wind away. The burners have too little power. You may like the device indoors, but outdoors it doesn't meet the requirements of a camping device. After 30 minutes the oven was only 165 C. I've never had it at 180 C. The handles are very shallow and not convenient for such a heavy device. More than 15 kg. Unfortunately I sold the device after 3 months.

I tried using the burners outdoors. The wind screen is pretty worthless. The burners seemed underpowered.

I only have a really low flame on the top burner. I'm using a new (full) propane cylinder and a 37 mBar regulator. Plus I get a big 'pop' flame-up when turning the burners off. Doesn't seem right. Any ideas?

Does the top of the stove have to be open when using the oven or can it remain down?

I have one of these that I have never used because I had the little Coleman stoves with a butane cans. I wanted to start using it but I want to make sure of a few things. First I have mine set up as a stove and oven in a van. All the signs are blocked off with fireproof board. My question is because I've never used the 1 lb green propane bottles. I would like to keep the green propane bottle hooked on so I can wake up in the morning and have my breakfast. Is it necessary to unhook the propane bottle after each use? The other thing is I hooked up one of the bottles cook some food and then I immediately unhooked the bottle just to be safe and it does like a little pop when you unhook, is that normal and nothing to worry about? I just want to make sure I am hooking the green propane bottle correctly and unhooking it afterwards correctly. Any help from anyone would be great, Thanks

It's fine to keep the 1 lb bottle connected. If you smell gas, check and tighten your gas connections. You really can't avoid the "pop" when disconnecting a 1 lb bottle since it has no shut-off at the tank. That is just the little bit of propane in the line. The only way to avoid it is to use a 20 lb tank instead. Turn off the 20 lb tank valve and let the burner run for a minute to burn the excess gas out of the line.
