I have a set of DCUs that I wore in Afghanistan 2003-04. 10th Mountain Division. And wore this pattern when I was at Sinai 2001, 25th ID. We didn’t get to keep those uniforms. 🇺🇸

As you may well know, UCP was the Army's attempt to create 1 pattern for all environments pattern, it was supposed to simplify logistics and cut costs. As far as the colors go, from what I've read the colors they used were chosen because they were what worked best under IR light/NVGs. Apparently, the concern of big Army at the time was fighting enemies using NVGs so they wanted a pattern that would work well when seen through NVGs, apparently not paying much attention to or caring how it worked during the day in sunlight.

Eh, not really. You're thinking of Cold War tech. UCP Was simply an attempt to look like a "21st century military".

It's worse than that. The original testing had four patterns: All-Over Brush, Track, Shadow Line and Scorpion. Basically a cooler DPM, two patterns that used the same base, but one's flipped to its side (and they used different black shapes) and the prototype MultiCam. They went three-four phases trying to zero in on a winning pattern and colorway (they started with four colors per pattern, except for Scorpion). At some point they decided to toss all of them and shat out UCP, a hideously bad colorway for the CADPAT/MARPAT and they tried to claim it was a digitalization of Urban Track, IIRC. So a few years ago they decided to try a fourth color in UCP, which clearly wasn't enough of a fix, so they just started authorizing the wear of MultiCam. The pattern the entire Army is transitioning to now... Is Scorpion W2, where they just fattened the black and cream shapes of the Scorpion.

@@Tounushi the UCP colorway was lifted from Urban Track pattern, which was also part of the test. The name Urban Track should have clued them in that it wasn't a universal color pallet, never was.

Was given a DCU shirt & purchased a Dutch version trouser in this pattern, the pinkish tan surprised me, but light reflexion in that environment makes sense. And will fade a bit with washing The British had painted desert vehicles during WW2 similarly to good effect. I like better than DS chocolate chip
