Unfortunately, the accommodation prices on the Camino del Norte are very high, regardless of whether we are talking about albergues or guesthouses/hotels. I remember with the same dislike the Portugalete experience - a night in a more than modest hostel, in week-end, which cost us 90 euros. However, we must not forget that, unlike the Camino Frances, which has a well-established albergue infrastructure with decent prices, where pilgrims are the main source of income for many villages/towns, the Camino del Norte crosses a very touristic area, where the emphasis is not on pilgrims, but on tourists with money. As for the weather, what can I say? The Camino del Norte is the most beautiful, the most spectacular, the most physically demanding, but also the most capricious from the weather point of view. We did it in the middle of summer, in July, and we still had about a week of cold rain. But the experience remains, along with beautiful memories. Be brave, you will succeed. Buen Camino!

You bring up a really good point. We were under the impression before walking that the Norte would be budget friendly but I think those touristy coastal towns do bring the prices up and there are less options. We just posted another video of some really nice (and affordable) accommodations we’ve found along the northern way!

Staying in municipal Alberges can help alleviate this problem. I did the Norte in 2023 and paid less than 15 euros a night in the majority of the places I stayed. That being said, sometimes the more touristic cities can be expensive. But if you're willing to depart with certain luxuries, the Norte can be done on a budget. It just means oftentimes not having private accommodations, think a room full of bunks instead of a private room.

I’m so glad you have found these videos helpful for your decision! It’s our goal to create a “visual guide” of sorts so you know everything to expect on the Northern Way. We have loved our experience on the Norte and couldn’t recommend it more! You’d never regret it 🥰

Hi! Thank you so much for following along, love having you here! Yes we actually did, total we had 4-6 days where we had "days off" from walking and it was mostly to work, because we were posting live from the field and we wanted for people to know what's happening on the trail and how are the prices currently! Anything specific you are interested in?

Paid €15 for an albergue in Portulagete, but I booked it in advance. You’re in a major tourist center, plan accordingly.

The Basque Country is one of the most expensive parts of Spain in terms of house prices. The Camino Frances, particularly in Galicia is much cheaper!

Just a heads up - you dont need to just get them from churches; bars, hotels and restaurants do them too. Almost all of the churches that we passed during the Camino Ingles were shut. Over 6 days I think we saw the inside of 2 churches until we reached SDC

I have hiked the french way from st Jean to Santiago 4 times. its the most popular camino route. Its way better. much cheaper. the camino del norte is more expensive because the infrastructure just inst there. Its not as well signed as the french way and there are fewer albergues so you have to walk. further and hence pay more as they can charge more. Where as on the french way there are literally towns and villages ever 5 KM and you can stay whereever you want. only about 10% of people hike the norte route whereas over 80% of hikers hike the francis route

This is a good point, but we chose the Norte route partially because it’s less crowded, so pros and cons! Plus with how busy the Frances has been, we’re happy with our choice 😊
