Camino Del Norte Guide - Episode 7 (Days 31-34) - 835km Hike

#caminodesantiago #CaminodelNorte #Thruhike #visitspain
On this adventure series I will be doing one of the most famous thru hikes in the world, Camino de Santiago or The Way of St. James. The camino actually has several different routes, and I will be taking one of the routes that is quickly getting a reputation for being the most beautiful routes of the Camino. The Camino del Norte or the Northern Way. This hike is roughly +835 kilometers and I plan to complete it in 35 days. On this episode I cover days 31-34 of the hike, trekking through the region of Galicia to the endpoint of Santiago de Compostela.
Day 31 - Baamonde to Sobrado dos Monxes
Day 32 - Sobrado dos Monxes to Arzúa
Day 33 - Arzúa to O Pedrouzo
Day 34 - O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostella
This video was produce in collaboration with the Spain tourism board, the tourism boards of Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia.

This brings back my memories of arriving in front of the cathedral! I was happy to have finished but at the same time sad that it was over. Meeting two of my newfound friends made it better. I've wanted to do it again ever since then. And next April I will with my wonderful friend from Brazil!

I am really enjoying your videos. For other peregrinos who are watching, the albergue at the monastery in Sobrado is quite an experience and one that I am glad I experienced. The opportunity to spend a night on the Camino in a cloister, attend mass and later vespers, in a 500 year old structure was very meaningful, even for a non-Roman Catholic. Thank you for the guide.

Loved the videos: thanks. Meeting people along the camino is part of the camino. I met people from everywhere but also spent a lot of time on my own going at my own pace (which was a lot faster than others). I developed a camino family and they helped with completing the camino. Without them I would never have made it. You never walk alone (in life and on the camino). You describe the arrival well: You are torn with completing the camino. It goes to show, it's the journey and not the destination. I was quite disappointed when I reached Santiago. I continued on to Finisterre and in Finisterre I welcomed people I had met along the way. On the Camino Frances, there is no coastline, so Finisterre was the cherry on top of the sundae. Well worth the trip to go there to see the coast. Next, the Camino Norte! Thanks for sharing your journey.

Wow Jan! I am totally jealous you did 3 caminos already, that is awesome! I had done a few segments of the French route as well as ton's of research. And unless you don't like ocean views, this is hands down the most scenic and diverse route of the camino. I highly reccommend it. If I do another it will probably be the Primitivo or the Plata. Buen 4th camino :)

Brian, truly a great series of Video's illustrating the Camino del Norte note, my wife and I both pensioners 65 & 70, and our first Camino, some of the daily stages are probably a little to long, understand we can shorten any stage but accommodation isn't always readily available for example from Baamonde to Sabrados dos Monex is 40 kms however there doesn't appear to be a mid stage accommodation one could consider? any suggestions would be welcome.... once again excellent information

I did the Camino Frances in 2017 and it had an amazing infrastructure but of course you had to deal with the hordes of peregrines. The Camino del Norte seems so pretty and serene. I’m also not a youngin’ ’ like you, so would be interested in your perspective for senior trekkers. Thank you.

Hi Pilgrim! It was a pleasure to follow you on the Camino del Norte. I made it in 2017, in 2016 I had already made the Camino Frances to Finisterre and then continued along the Camino Portugues on the opposite side, from Santiago to Lisbon! I have a question for you, have you filmed it all by yourself or did you have any support for it? Once again, thank you for this beautiful project! Always have a Buen Camino!

Hi fellow peregrino! I went with a cameraman, but we walked the entire way. How did you like the camino portugues?

Nice man! There were only two moments in your videos that I imagined you were not alone on the Camino. Well, the Caminho Portugues for me was something really special, first that my spatial perceptions changed - as I came from Saint Jean in the winter I had the sun every time on my left side, so when I started this new direction I had the sun in my front, so the colors of Galicia changed and also the encounters with other peregrinos were different, because as I was on the opposite side - from Santiago to Lisbon - I usually only had a few moments with them in the albergues. Well, this road is also full of beauties, but much more lonely and introspective for me. I really loved that, amazing scenery and tasty Portuguese food 😁 Ultreya!

congrats! just finished watching the 7 episodes as my friend and i are looking to do the northern route as well. i noticed that the doors to the cathedral are closed, did that mean that you could not go in? are there better days in the week to finish (like a sunday) and schedule the walk properly so that you can go into the cathedral at the very end?

Hi Brian! Great accomplisment. Congratulations! I'm planning my Camino, too, although still have to chose between del Norte and Portuguese one. However, I'm not a fan of albergues. I saw that you were picking mostly single rooms in order to be rested well for the next day. Is it complicated to find it in small cities or villagges and what can be found in 25$ zone? Thank you for your kind help. BR.

Thanks! honestly the albergues are not so bad...the main reason i didn't stay in more was because I needed electricity to plug in all my camera equipment and I didn't want to hog all of them. However, the added comfort was definitely appreciated. If you travel with another person you can definitely find rooms for $50. I used mostly booking.com to find places along the route, but don't reserve a bunch of places cause if one of your days ends short it will affect all your other reservations. I would suggest you stay in albergues for two nights and then on the 3rd night get a hotel...this should keep you at $25/night. Buen Camino!

Hi - we, Debbie and me, will be arriving in Zarutze to start the Camino del Norte on the 11 May 2020. We will will have already walked from Yorkshire to London before flying to Spain. My question, how much did you budget per day for accommodation and meals. Enjoyed the 7 episodes so much, thank you. Only a few weeks to go before we set off from Harrogate on Easter Sunday. Hurrah

Thanks Chad! I have not done the French route, but i would say do them both :)....Depends if you want your trip to be more social or not. If you want to meet tons of people i would suggest the French route. But if scenery and personal reflection is your goal then definitely the Northern Way is best. Both ways are great, so it is a win-win. Buen Camino!

what shoes did you use? Did they stay dry? (just finished Camino Frances but torrential rain last 2/7 and 'waterproof shoes' let in), great videos, ta

My shoes were pretty good...Salomon somethings...but they would get wet from water coming in around the ankle if it was raining real hard. I was very happy with the shoe.

Thanks so much! I debated on using poles, but since I was filming I figured it would be just one more thing to deal with...I hear from pole users that it helps 10-15%, as you can use your arms more especially on climbs/decents.

Hi, I very much enjoyed your videos of the Camino del norte. I’ve done 200 miles of the st. James, but had to fly home when my home flooded. I want to return but this time walk the norte. I’m in moderately good shape. What are the physical requirements?

I had a couple of questions: Did you ever plan where you were going to sleep? Also, is there a map or you just follow the signs? I know you mentioned the offline app in your other video. And who sets the distance or which towns you must go to?

I watched all the videos, great job. I wish you would have said how long each day took and what time you set off. I will be doing it in the summer this year from San Sebastian and wondering how many days i can shave off.

The reason I didn't add this information is because i was filming each day and it took up about 2 hours of each day. If i wasn't filming I think I could have done it in under 30 days. Just depends on how fast you walk and for how long you can walk. 20km per day is easily achieved, but as you get above 30km per day it is important to walk at sunrise and possibly ending around dusk. Hope this helps. Buen Camino!

@@TheTravelVlogger Yeah helps a lot, thanks. I assumed it would take you longer with you vlogging along the way. I will do the northern route in the height of summer so will be setting off early most days, although i live in a hot country so the heat doesn't bother me too much. I regularly walk 20KL in a day, my feet will start to ache a bit after but i could easily go on for another 20 (depending on terrain) assuming some breaks here and there. I am thinking walking on 28 to 30 days, but taking 33 days to do it meaning i get some days off in some of the more interesting places.

I cycled it this summer. The Basque part is very hard. And in the summer you need to be on the road by 6am so you can stop at a hostel at about 3pm or you may not find a bed. I did it in two weeks, but you need to be fit, have good weather and eat a lot of food.

QUICK question- we are planning to bike Camino del Norte - is it realistic to plan 10 days 80-100km / day with the same route as the walking route? REGARDIG Terrain: Will we need MTB or will a cross/ gravelbikes work are there many places we'dneed to push/carry the bikes? Is there a good map or book to help plan? We have done x-Alp via Claudia 6 times already and are in good shape. Is this realistic??? Thanks for any feedback:-). Go Camino😂

albergues generally run between €6-12 per night. Food depends on you. Some days i would eat from a super market and would spend less than €15/day. Buen Camino!
