The advice on setting your camera to aperture priority mode for a wide-angle shot sounds like a great one in theory. However, on my Canon R6 Mark II, spot metering is not linked to the autofocus spot. Instead, the camera uses a small circle in the center of the frame. If anyone knows of a setting that links metering to the AF spot in Av mode on a Canon mirrorless camera, please let me know!

You might be ok if the spot meter circle is not near the sun. It just needs to be on a clear area of the sky.

@@StanHonda-bn7tk I figured out that this is only an issue when I set the lens to manual focus. On autofocus it behaves as it should! 🤷Anyway - thanks for responding and thanks for all of your really helpful eclipse tutorial videos!!

@@elizabethsbrocco6658The camera should be on manual focus if you do aperture priority. The spot meter should be placed on the sky to measure properly, so the autofocus could be fooled and try to focus before each photo. It may produce out of focus photos since there is nothing to focus on.

Do I remove my camera solar filter to photograph the Diamond ring/Bailey beads ,but do not look thru the viewfinder?

While you can leave the solar filter in place in the final seconds (20-30s) before second contact (or after third) your photos won't show any 'flare' of the diamond ring or beads - they'll look flat. Most of the photos you typically see are taken without filter (but never remove it more than 60s before C2 - probably less to be on the safe side). If you're shooting with a DSLR with optical viewfinder, don't look through that at this time with the filter removed - use live view instead. If you're using a mirrorless camera with an electronic viewfinder, it's fine to look through that. Generally, the advice is not to look directly at the diamond ring or Baily's beads before C2 as it messes up your dark adaptation and makes it harder to see the corona during totality.

🤣🤣... Everything he said, I'm doing the opposite. Renting a telephoto lens and getting it 4 days before the eclipse. Using two cameras both connected to laptops running automation software. The camera with the telephoto lens will be on a star tracker. Multiple action cameras doing time lapse. A smart telescope taking video..... And he said don't take to much gear....🤣
