the 35 summicron really needs an m series camera, it works fine on the SL series, but the beauty of it is when you pair it with an m body. the low profile camera set up,, range finder style zone focusing and image rendition make it an absolute dream to use. for DSLR style cameras the DSLR lenses just work better for them. if you want rangefinder lenses get a rangefinder body to really maximise its usage
I'm too poor to buy unnecessary stuff. Each of the few pieces I own are very well thought, planned ahead (money saving time helps) and put to use until it breaks for good. I just bought the Canon R8 after using my previous camera, the Canon Rebel SL1 for almost a decade. I was considering buying the Canon RP for months, but I waited to see if a better and as cheap camera would come. I don't regret holding back few more month as the R8 has everything I wanted in the RP, but better. Your video are very pleasing to watch. I like your aesthetic and the color pallet you display.
A little click bait for you Fuji fans. 😂

I'm glad the Fujinon 18 f2 from the thumbnail was just a clickbait, as I love this little bad boy and it gets so much smack online. Good video, agree with the sentiment!
I bought that same gimbal earlier this year too and rarely use it. I think I’m gonna start just renting certain gear until it’s something I use often. Great video!
The biggest camera gear regret which I corrected this year, was disregarding MFT as an option. Once the 90mm macro from OM Systems came out I switched out my APSC system for MFT and now I wish I would have started with MFT back in 2015 when I started to using mirrorless systems.

Hey that's how you learn though. You might not be so sure about the decision had you started with mft.
I love and use my Gitzo Traveler tripod all the time. However it's a different model and I have replaced the ball head with one that supports arca swiss plates.

I can't even justify a gitzo since I don't use the tripod enough, maybe few times per year. hearing from someone gitzo sucks is very hard to understand. if money was no object I would go with gitzo, it's actually better than manfrotto and others.
The Leica flash is a rebranded Nissin i60A. A very good and inexpensive flash, light, accurate and powerful. And, obviously, much cheaper.
I’ve recently started to get into photography just with my phone sadly haha but I do wanna save for a camera but your vids have helped a bunch on the knowledge behind it all thank you

Just start cheap. Buy a combo package Canon EOS 2000D + 18-55mm or something like that. U can but this for under 500. When I bought mine it came with 2 lensen the 18/55 and 75/300. Its really great just to start and find out what u really need before spending big bucks.

@@BoneThugsNL yea I’ve been watching many vids and a lot of them mention the best thing to do is buy a set for under $700 until you start making money and finding out what type of photographer you wanna become
Noticing a small 'Leica remorse' here, hehe... But no seriously, I too push myself to evaluate gear based on return for jobs. Easily my most valued item that has returned the most is my XF90/2, that lens is responsible for around 40% of my event work and was very reasonably priced. My poorest investment was the IBELUX Handevision 40mm f0.85, which I managed to negotiate a half price tag but still ended up costing me $1200AUD and really sees very little CLIENT work. This is not a bad lens, in fact it is one of my most favourite lenses I have ever bought, but it really only sees personal work and never client work, in part due to its manual focus only but also it takes up too much space and weight in my event bag (it weighs 1.2kg!). I still can't bring myself to sell it however as it is gorgeous and buying it back at around the same price would be difficult. So sometimes there are work toys and play toys I guess...

Agreed - and Leica remorse makes a lot of sense when one evaluates camera gear on a “return on investment” basis. From a photography for profit perspective, there is almost nothing that a very expensive Leica camera does that isn’t done as well or better by a less expensive Sony kit; even high-end Canon kits are still typically cheaper than Leica
As a person who makes money from imagines and video, Im glad you mentioned the trip where you believe you need to upgrade something that no one has complained about. Lenses, sensors are a big one. Audio has a caveat in that you do want crisp and clear audio, but once you have that..there is no reason to keep upgrading it. If anything, if you get a bigger job than usual..hire what you need, don't buy it.
I'm glad it's not just me doing mental gymnastics to justify buying something I kinda know I'll regret later! 🤣
My takeaway is not to over complicate things. You could not have said it better. Keeping it simple is better 9 out of 10. Great informative video Evan!
Not a professional by any stretch but enjoyed the mindset and thought process of evaluating purchases. Went through the struggle of having to sell piles of old gear that was used once or never so now wait at least 2 days before hitting checkout unless there is an established used case.
I've bought a gimbal twice and sincerely regretted it both times. Having a camera with IBIS + Lens with OIS and shooting handheld/with a cage/brace is SO much better for me that futzing with an electronic gimbal. You can get some cool shots with a gimbal, but it's a giant pain in the neck for workflow most of the time. At least, that's my experience.
Thank you!!!!
very useful video as usual .... I Love you
I understand completely. There is gear that inspires me, gear that makes me money, and gear that is just a load on my brain (I should use this more because....). I have 2 gimbals that are just loads.
Only thing I regret in 2023 is the amount of clickbait so going to do something about it right now. Thanks for making me realize I need to change the way I think. Best of luck.
Hilarious, I own two of those, and have my own lens regret as well but shoot Nikon mirrorless instead of Leica. Just discovering your channel this week and looking forward to seeing if I can take your knowledge, apply, and see 2024 as the year that I finally made it. Thanks for all the information!
Those Sigmas are gorgeous. I'm a MFT shooter and have the 16 and 30 f1.4s. I'll be going portrait lens as well when I save up for the 56mm f1.4. Can't wait to see what you create with those new Sigmas.

@@RanftEvan I bet man. I've seen a few videos on it and that's the exact impression it gives me. "Fun", and that's what it is all about.
One of the best gear investments in my case is that Gitzo you don't like. I have had mine since 2016, and it traveled with me all over the world, btw in my 360 business it made a ton of money. I still have the original head with Arca Swiss connection. Never had any, even a small issue with this tripod. Btw I constantly switch the heads, from original to mecha computerized 360 heavy had. No issues.

I am in the process of starting a YT channel and funny enough picked up the Rode Nt Usb and was thinking about some sort of device for mixing etc so glad i saw this video - totally suspect im over thinking it. Side note - any Nikon cameras and lens youd recommend for talking head or product reviews on a desk? Im a huge Nikkn fan but know next to nothing about cameras and a lot of Yt channels are saying cannon and sony recommendations.
I agree with you and the reasons why you would regret some purchases. THe good thing is that you can sell most of the stuff you listed
Dear heavens! I thought you were about to say you regret getting the Q2 Ghost edition, was about to scream at the screen “BRO SELL IT TO ME! I’ll pay you bi weekly or how ever you want!!!!” 😂😂😂 but also this video made me think and makes me want to study more myself about how should I go about starting up from 0
I also think many people have too many lenses they don't use. I would recommend maximum 3 lenses per camera. a more generic one (e.g 24-70mm), a fast prime (e.g 50mm) and an ultrawide (e.g 14mm). if you really need you can add a telephoto (e.g 70-200), but that's it. if you have more than 3-4 lenses, some may stay at home for so long you forgot you have them. this is a waste
not a fan of buying second hand? I picked up that same summicron for 2600 with a warranty from Leica store miami, when I decided to sell it I only lost $200 and upgraded to the summilux.
That Leica flash looks awfully similar to a Nissin flash from 5 to 6 years ago, which had cost around $100 if I remember correctly. So yo say Laica variant was expensive?
Luckily my gimbal was provided. Used it for a review and it’s collected dust ever since. I find anything between me and my camera is just to much. Thanks for sharing.
I always think about Lieca lenses like that. You want but do you get really that much benefit..? Maybe second hand buying is better investment.
Do you still plan on getting a Nikon Z9/Z8?
I bought an RS3 Pro thinking I would use it all the time but it's like brand new, I used it 7 times for 5h total
Too late, I’ve already bought and sold so many lenses the last 4 years, maybe 9 or so? I’ve landed and stuck with a 35 f/1.4

All time favorite for me. The sigma 35 1.4 a was the first real lens I bought back in 2014 (I think) and it was a game changer for me
Always love my Sigma lenses - quality at a lower price. I want them to make a wider variety for the Nikon Z mount. I spend so much time evaluating my purchases that I have found I regret very little for my sometimes self destructive habit. So you replaced the gimbal with an Alec?
@RanftEvan
11 ай бұрын
Lol yep Alec is the human gimbal! And I’m the same way, I’m very particular about what I spend money on especially because it burns money that can go elsewhere in the business. That’s why this list was pretty short
wow I cant even afford ANY Leica camera, just too damn expensive!! and its not worth it if u have one, and if you live here in the Philippines, people always asking for free pics, cheap bastards!
I also own the sigma 85 1.4 and I love it for landscape

The problem with the carbon fiber tripods is that they wobble in the wind. Long exposure is totally compromised if the tripod is not rigid enough.
here's a great idea... loan me the leica camera and flash and i'll make you those dollars lovely content as per usual.. looking forward to more great videos
Sell me that gimbal Evan! I’ll pay shipping too
I used to love this channel until it all became business, investing… growing making money of photography…..
The problem is that you are doing photography for $$$ (nothing wrong with that) but when you do photography for the sake of the ART, everything changes...
😊
Huge +1 on the Gitzo traveler. That thing is stank. Leica stores push these up in my parts. Just say no.
you really thought the leica lens would have a return?... lol
The worst camera gear I bought is Godox Litemons. Yes, mi definetly selling it. Poor lighting, poor batery life, and very expensive for what it is.
