Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Grizzly Bear Van has lost the seal that he buried and suspects the crew might have taken it.
In this episode, the world-famous salmon run arrives in Alaska. The bears must catch hundreds of these fish if they are to bulk up and survive the harsh winter months. We discover that young grizzly mum Parsnip and her cub Pushki have returned to the bay to feed on the salmon. But predatory adult bears will kill cubs and, with fierce competition, Parsnip must protect her cub and learn the skills of fishing if they are to both make it through hibernation.
As winter approaches, life gets more intense, survival gets tougher, and the threats get even greater.

@@George-nx5lo You gun nuts are hilarious. There are several reported cases of bears taking multiple high caliber shots to the head mid charge, and still making contact, and falling AFTER the attack. So congrats, you shot, the bear, but it still got to maul you. Their skulls are thick, as are their hides. Right here on KZread, you can find a video of a grizzly bear taking a point blank shotgun blast to the face, falling to the ground, then getting up to repeat the charge. Multiple reports done by wildlife agencies have also compared the efficacy of firearms against bears versus spray, and I've yet to see a report done by any reputable agency that says firearms are more effective.. Bear spray is less powerful than human pepper spray, you are correct. However that is because a bear's nose is a hundred times more powerful than ours, and they take massive breaths. "Bear spray is a very effective deterrent when used properly. In a 2008 review of bear attacks in Alaska from 1985-2006, Smith et al. found that bear spray stopped a bear's "undesirable behavior" in 92% of cases. Further, 98% of persons using bear spray in close-range encounters escaped uninjured."

No need. Bear spray is far more effective by data. Gunshots hardly ever kill a bear instantly. It usually takes five shots to bring them down on the spot. While the bear is bleeding out, it can easily kill its attacker. The bear spray gives him such sensory trauma, and breathing difficulties, he wants no more of it.

If it would have been (just) the two guys then he would have at least got a lot closer and that's usually when humans (panic and either run or spray) and shit hits the fan! Bears are instinctual killers and two people don't really bother a bear as far as them being scared or spooked, but a group of people somehow is overwhelming for there mind to conceive. I have lived at the base of a mountain for years and i (Never) all through the years while my kids were growing up let just two play outside alone. I would make sure all the kids went out or my wife and i went out if it was just two kids because we had lots of bears come into our yard. These guys were safe unless they done something dumb like spray or run, the bear might have even came right up to them sniffed them and walked away (but most humans panic at that point!). We have had bears amped up because someone let the dam dog out and nothing amps a bear up more than a dog, we have had bears chasing our dog right by us within a couple feed, just go right by us and try and eat our dog.

Both cameraman and showman where incredibly lucky to have such a talented guy wisely telling them what to do at those circumstances. Such a majestic creature! A huge boar grizzly, must have been at least a 500-kilogram beast! Definitely a jaw droppin, thrilling experience, but somehow inspiring. Let’s keep wild places WILD, so the king of Alaska keeps balancing the ecosystem.

@JustHereToComment. There's always gotta be one idiot in the comments, and here you are... These guys are only alive and un-maimed because they did the exact opposite of what your youtube-expert opinion suggests they should have done. It is pretty much universally accepted that when in a confrontation with a brown bear, you stand your ground, remain calm, and speak in a soft voice so that the bear can hear you, but doesn't perceive you as aggressive/threatening. It's no coincidence that once these guys further submitted to the bear that he became satisfied that they weren't challenging his kill. You are thinking of the rules of engagement when dealing with a large cat (in Alaska, obviously that's the mountain lion). Kneeling or turning your back in the presence of a large feline is akin to activating their kill switch.

@JustHereToComment. this is the only video I seen of an approaching grizzly in which the humans kneel or get low and talk softly. In all the others the people remain standing and talk to the bear pretty firmly or loudly: A lot of hunters seems to hell, "hey! Hey, Git out of here!," etc. And it has worked.

Reminds me of a large black bear we saw at Glacier NP. We were hiking and came to a Tsection. I looked left and saw a large bear with a long snout about 20-25 ft away. WAY TOO CLOSE!! I saw its large black eyes. Everything got quite and I felt like things were going in slow motion. Because we were hidden a bit by bushes and trees we just slowly backed off. The bear didn't react to us and we were fine. But I was really scared. I've seen bears run and there's no escaping them if they decide to chase you. This footage was very scary. Kudos to the crew for keeping calm.
