🌺Camellia Tour / Winter Flowers🌺

🌺Camellia Japonica Tour / Winter Flowers🌺 - In this video I tour a neighbors yard who has a large Camellia collection. I didn't want to guess the variety names, because there are 1000's of named Camellia varieties. I did a video at Camellia Forest Nursery last year and many of the ones in this video came from there.

I appreciate his addiction to Camellias! He's got quite a collection already. But I know how it is, you keeping hunting for a prettier one that you don't already own. Thanks for taking us around to look at all of these beauties. I saw a few that REALLY appeal to me - double flowered are my favorites & the one with pink petals trimmed in white was stunning. Can't wait to see how the remodel is going & good luck with it all.

I live in Texas zone 8a. I guessing that I would have to plant the camellia in the shade and not full afternoon sun.

Probably "benign neglect" after year 3😅 (unless they are poorly sighted). For ex: I have an 8×8 camellia japonica in full sun on a brick patio. I was unaware enough to plant it there; and it was resilient enough to thrive into a shrub (now tree formed ).

Wow, these are gorgeous and I love that they don’t flower at typical times of year. I had Camellia ‘April Rose’ in western New York, zone 6a. It overwintered very well - buds and all, but my (at that time) puppy black lab decided it was tasty. The plant was demolished & barely recovered later that growing season; once the heat kicked in, it succumbed. Definitely my fault because I dug and potted it... I’m gonna try some more this spring!

My camellias lost so many leaves from the stress they were under this past summer. The heat and lack of rain was made worse because we had to remove some trees. I’m going to be running drip and wondered if you normally run drip to established shrubs. I don’t think they’d normally need extra water but it would be nice for it to be available for the times we don’t have rain. I guess I need to figure out a way to have a valve to them so I can just turn it on occasionally and yet still be able to water the perennials more often. Thanks for the tour!

Happy to know I'm not the only one obbessed with Camelia Japonicas! Mine is a double pink, and it's blooming early as well due to this warm weather. Any tips on leaf care? Mine started getting weird ridges, might be spider mites so I shot it with a water soap solution, hoping it helps!

What works for me: a slow release fertilizer like Hollytone... After flowering. Buds are easy to see by late summer, so you can tell if you're pruning them off.

Hello Jim, I live in the Greensboro, NC area. Will the shishi do well on the north east side of my house? I don't have a true east and I get lots of sun on the other 3 sides. I'm planning a trip to Camellia Forest this month. Thank you.

Throughly enjoyed this tour, as I’m jealous I can’t plant these in my yard zone 6b. I always loved to be down at my brother’s when theirs blooms, but would never invest for their dogs to tear up such beauty. Would like to know about what the homeowner uses what type of acid and how it is used. You kind of answered my question if you, Tarheels, have to amend for acid loving scrubs, i.e camellia, hydrangea and rhododendrons. Thank you for all you do!
