Camcorders still matter | Canon XA10 this Gear Tuesday

Camcorders are still valuable tools. Far from the chunky VHS monsters us kids of the 80's grew up with, professional camcorders can be a great tool for a photographer. I happen to have a Canon XA10, and I love it! Here's some reasons why.

I am gearing up to do motorcycle travel videos. I have this camera, but was about to buy a Canon M50. I figured I'd give this a try.

I still do work with the XA10, and using XV colors in manual mode, it is indisguinsabe to newer cameras in quality and sharpness in 1080P. However being older, having less dynamic range, I do have to be more careful with my lights to get a scene in the sweet spot. Outdoors, it is flawless in the golden hour and does well in overcast with natural light, but it still has the classic Canon flaw of red being too dominating in certain conditions, but that can be mediated in edit. In low light (street lamp lit night scene) color is as good as day time with no noticable noise. I've never used night shot for anything, but you can see everything in a room with the small remote type IR LED in the handle. What I also like about this camera is its action optical stabilisation. When coupling that with the digital anti shake in the camera and simple passive counterweight steadicam type setup, I can do as good running as with a gimbal without getting the rigid drone type footage, that is too robot like in some circumstances.

I've found the same to be true! Night shot is pretty meh. The remote is my favorite! I can't remember if I talked much about it ... but it's so convenient! You're definitely right about the stabilization! Thanks so much for your comment. (And sorry for the late response ... I'm trying to be a lot better with replying to comments this year. Feel free to check out some of my other shoot videos!)

How would this camera be for filming hunting/fishing type videos? Looks like it does great in low light. Do you have one for sale?

Bruce Snyder I did. “Slow Motion” is achieved by filming at a frame rate higher than the final playback frame rate. I covered the frame rates this films at: 24p, 25p, 30p, 50i & 60i. So no: it does not do high frame rates. It sounds like you’re wanting something above 240fps, which is MUCH more expensive and moving into specialty camera territory.

@@kylehooksaphotographer2182 ok sorry, i am totally ignorant when it comes to this stuff. I just want to start filming mine and my Son's hunts so want an easy to point n shoot quality camera. This is available on Amazon for under 900 bucks brand new which is pretty dang good I think. Love the infrared features and 2 slot sd card thing. Thanks for your time.
