    Very good tips. However, from my own experience, we don't have so much time to underline or write down notes. We barely have time to quickly read the hypothetical answers.

  • @teacherphill

    I agree with you that there is only very little time, but you can at least try to underline as much as possible. Every little bit of help is important in the listening test.

    Okay, so. I took my C1 exam this morning and I may have walked in with too much confidence. I had done sevetal different exercises and they had all gone well, but I might have to blame myself for poor time management during reading. That, I can blame myself for and improve. What I can't blame myself for, however, is the listening part. There isn't enough time and there will never be enough time to properly read the questions, and I think this is ridiculous. Only being able to listen to a recording twice is totally fine, and I can deal with having the computer decide when the replay begins, too. But the fact that there's barely enough time to read the questions and not nearly enough time to read the possibile answers in a test that demands your full attention to details is utterly stupid, and quite the scam in my opinion. Didn't help that I have terrible eyesight and generally take longer than others to read, but again, this should be a listening test, where you should be allowed to fully concentrate on the recording, not having to manage reading tasks, highlighting important information, listening to said informations before they're gone forever and getting your incoming panic attack under control.

    Thank you for your comment. For candidates who have hearing or vision impairments, Cambridge does offer special arrangements. As you said yourself, you could have spent some time beforehand to check that and inform Cambridge when signing up for the test. You would have received a time bonus or something similar. The exam is difficult, no doubt about it, but it is fair to everyone. Note: I do not work for Cambridge English Assessment and don't get paid by them to say this. However, I am an invigilator and speaking examiner who has done exams with candidates who needed special arrangements and there aren't typically any problems. With all that being said, I hope you were still able to pass the test and I would love to find out how it went.

    @teacherphill thanks for your feedback! I didn't apply for the test through Cambridge's portals themselves, but through a private school, which wasn't the best school to begin with, but was the only one available in my city. I will get the results in 3 weeks (there were only two other candidates, I suppose they send the exams to Cambridge and get them back). Should I not pass, I'll make sure to prepare more adequately when I eventually try again.

    I will take Eiken(advanced English test in Japan). I was studying in America long time ago. One on one dialog is not difficult. Part2 is difficult. The speaker reads scripts. Some scripts are difficult for me to understand, for example, History. Usually, questions are "What happened during Civil war?" and "What does the man imply?" something like this. Part2 is difficult for many Japanese people. If you have an advise, that would be helpful. Maybe Eiken and TOEIC are different from CAE. It will be helpful for any type of listening tests.

    To be honest, I have no idea about this test. Perhaps you should have a look at other KZread channels that provide some information on Eiken. Unfortunately, I'm not the right person to ask.

    I think that you can't do much with only a few days left before your exam. You can practise listening to different accents and try to become more familiar with them, but with so little time I think you should just do the test and trust in your abilities. :)

    The major problem for me in multiple choice questions is that we don't have enought time to read the question. I mean, we have 8 seconds to read two questions with 3 possible answers each one?! It's ridicoulous and it's worse if we think that C1 listening we make a mistake by ignoring DETAILS. I do believe many people lose points just because they didn't have time do read and understand the questions. I did many and many listening tests, and when I'm able to read it with 20 seconds, I don't have problems at all, but, just taking a quick glance in 8 seconds I made mistakes exclusively because I didn't have time to read it lol. So, it's not a good way to evaluate our listening skills, is it?!

  • @teacherphill

    @teacherphill

    I think you make a very good point. I've never understood why there is so much time pressure on candidates in the listening test but, unfortunately, it is what it is. Perhaps Cambridge will adjust the timings in the future, but until then we have to deal with what they give us and try to do our best.

    That's a good point. In the computer-based exam you can't take as many notes and not as freely as on paper, but to be honest, I don't have a lot of experience with the computer-based exam myself. Basically all of my students take the paper-based test.

    Hi! In B1 PET it's bad to get a 157 like not a B2 level in the test

  • @teacherphill

    @teacherphill

    8 ай бұрын

    Is this a question or a you sharing your opinion? If you take B1 Preliminary, you want to prove that your level of English is B1. A score of 157 in this exam is a pretty good result. If you want to demonstrate that your level is B2, you should take B2 First.

You can make notes and write down what you think the correct answers are while listening and at the end of the test you get five minutes to transfer your answers onto the separate answer sheet.
