Cambridge Audio Azur 640C CD tray Fixed!

Ойын-сауық

If you have a CD player with a tray which won’t eject, the first thing to check is the condition of the belt.
As the belts age they lose their elasticity and no longer grip the little pulley wheels.
This CD player uses a Sony mechanism.
The diameter of the belt is just under 3cm.
I bought a replacement from eBay on this link
ebay.us/n87g48
You will also need a torx T6 screwdriver to remove the top cover. I found the best price was Amazon.
amzn.to/3IfyyrZ
Once you remove the cover, push the cd tray out to give you access to the mechanism. Unclip the little black plastic cover, and you will gain access to the pulley wheels.
Using a couple of small screwdrivers or long tweezers, thread the old belt off and put the new belt on.
Push the CD tray back in.
Switch on and test the mechanism before replacing the cover.
It’s about a ten minute fix and costs about £10
Good luck, and enjoy many more hours of high quality listening!

If tweezers are used to remove and insert the belt, the plastic cover over the pulleys doesn't need to be unclipped. Before you install the new belt, use a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol to clean the pulleys. Any 40 mm belt will work. When replacing a screw in a plastic component, it is a good idea to turn the screw backwards first until it drops down slightly so you don't cut a second set of threads and enlarge the hole.

Well I used this great video and it was worked a treat. Super helpful showing the part number so clearly. To remove the drawer entirely release two tiny plastic pins that stop the drawer sliding all the way out. They’re about 2cm in from the front cover. For me and my wife the BEST But if this video were the interruptions. What a smart kid. Screw screw screw will become a family meme with us. Huge thanks

Yes - I did it that too as I don't ever like disassembling mechanisms unnecessarily in case they're more precisely aligned than one might assume. Anyone who has worked on optical instruments like microscopes will especially agree with this!

If you cannot get a new belt you can try to heat the original belt shortly with a lighter. This might be enough is some cases as well. Did this years ago on my 640C and since then I had no issues with not opening door.

Not really a satisfying method. Heating the belt might "shrink it" which is why this might work. But cleaning the pulleys and a new belt ($ 5 + shipping) isn't really expensive at all for those quite good or even (740/780C) great CD Players.

No analog can be due to R11 in the mute circuit going open since the 1/8 watt 2.2k resistor cannot handle the current. If R11 goes open, the muting relay contacts never open and there is no analog output, but the digital and optical still work R11 has some goop on it which doesn't help the heat dissipation. Replace R11 with a 1/2 watt resistor but keep it away from the nearby components.

@@phatado not exactly what I meant, but your suggestion is nevertheless valuable. I already managed to get to the belt, removed the old one and inserted a new one. Unfortunately, the drawer is no longer properly aligned to the cogwheel. So the drawer now slides in and out flawlessly, but stops at the wrong point (the Azur thinks it's not fully closed yet). This video hides some of the most imporant steps. Anybody saying that the plastic cover over the pulleys doesn't need to be unclipped talks utter nonsense, it has to be unclipped on both sides, back and front, otherwise you have to force the belt over the large pulley and you evidently will badly stretch it. I have changed belt on the Azur 840C, 740C and 640C. All three have 100% identical CD drives. Steps: 1. Take off the top of your Azur CD Player (8 torxscrews) 2. Switch it ON and open the CD tray. 3. Switch off (Azur 840C on the backside, can't remember 740C and 640C) so the tray stays open! 4. Unscrew 4 PH-screws which fix the CD-Drive to the bottom 5. Carefully take off the flat ribbon cable which connects the Laser to the Precision Servo on the left side 6. Take of the two other connectors on the left side 7. Carefully take the CD-Drive out backwards. 8. Unscrew that part which holds the CD down (with rubber damping on top, 2 PH screws) 9. You now can see the plastic cover, it needs glued to the bottom and needs to be unclipped at the front and back! 10. Take the belt out 11. clean the pulleys with isoprop. alcool 12. insert the new belt 13. clip the plastic cover back and use some glue to fix it again (glue used for the soles of shoes is best) 14. Carefully without bending insert the flat ribbon cable to the laser 15. insert the 2 left connectors 16. insert the 4 x screws which fix the drive to the bottom 17. screw back the that part which holds the CD down and so on. Before you close the player, run it and check that all works well. If all this doesn't work, just buy a "loader for Cambridge Audio Azur 840C" from Aliexpress. More expensive, but it comes with a new drive and new laser. You just have to remove the aluminium front part which is glued to the drive (silver or black aluminium) It needs to be carefully losened with a razorblade!
