Caltrain Stadler EMU move from CEMOF

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On November 15th, 2022, Caltrain brought out one of their four delivered Stadler KISS EMUs from the CEMOF to San Jose Diridon station. The train set was put on display on the furthest platform at the station for the Commuter Rail Coalition Group to view and tour the new equipment. The private event also included short speeches and presentations.
It all started at 6am, when the dedicated train crew was to go on duty to tow the EMU to the Diridon. F40PH-2 JPBX917 "Gilroy" was assigned to be the locomotive used for said move. The crew then get the locomotive into position in front of the EMU, install a special coupler to the EMU coupler and attach the two. After a few morning trains pass and clear the main track, the crew then move the EMU out of the CEMOF to San Jose Diridon for the event.
After the event came to a close, the crew then made their way back to the CEMOF, shoving the EMU back to the storage tracks to collect dust for another few months until testing begins.
Hope you all enjoyed. Please make sure like, subscribe, favorite and share with your friends.

Nice video you made, you can compare the past, present and future of the trains. For me it looks a bit special, because in Switzerland I only have to go to the station and watch the KISS pass by. Or board it if necessary. Since 99.9% of our railway lines are electrified, you only see diesel locomotives in marshalling yards and, for example, on the Furka mountain line, which is only open to tourists in summer and is therefore operated with diesel locomotives or restored steam locomotives. I work on the outskirts of Zurich, where around 2,200 trains arrive and depart from the main station every day. It's only a few minutes from one KISS to the next. The only problem is that there are 16 tracks at ground level and a further 10 tracks in 3 underground stations, 2 of which are not used by the KISS. and in between is a shopping mall with over 100 shops. the underground lines cross under the two rivers that connect not far from the station. But I'm still happy for all of you who are eagerly waiting to ride Caltrain's KISS. Maybe I can do that in the future. I keep my fingers crossed that the tests will take place as planned and that the new trains will soon be on the rails.

The electrification is at 25000 volts single phase alternating current at 60 Hz. The Stadler KISS160 trains are built from extruded aluminium, are formed as 6-car sets (TMc-M-T-M-T-TMc; 3M3T; 2-Bo+Bo-Bo+2-2+Bo-Bo+2-2+Bo-2), and will feature the BORDLINE® series of IGBT-VVVF C/I (variable-voltage/variable-frequency converter and inverter with insulated-gate bipolar transistor technology) propulsion systems supplied by ABB.

As I understand it, originally the order was for 16 6-car trainsets with an option for IIRC 8 additional trainsets, but at the last minute, a 7th car was added to every trainset, so there should be something around 24 or 25 7-car trainsets.

Caltrain'a being electrified. Why? You ask, well it's due to the California High Speed Rail Authority constructing the high speed train. The first Caltrain Electric Multiple Units have arrived. More are soon to be expected. The Stadler KISS EMUs are currently undergoing testing. It's the end of the line for Caltrain's diesel fleet. I sure hope we can save some Caltrain diesels for preservation. We'll miss you Caltrain diesels. Goodbye Caltrain diesels and hello Caltrain Stadler KISS Electric Multiple Units.

"Caltrain'a being electrified. Why? You ask, well it's due to the California High Speed Rail Authority constructing the high speed train. " A common misconception. San Francisco voters approved the spending five years before CAHSR was on the ballot. I'm from Silicon Valley but always follow Bay Area public transit news so I remember this. From the wikipedia article, "Caltrain Modernization Program": "In 2003, The San Francisco County Transit Authority proposed Proposition K in San Francisco, a local transportation sales tax. Voters were given an expenditure plan estimating the total cost of Caltrain electrification as $183.5 Million with San Francisco's share costing $20.5M, met with Proposition K, which passed." Eventually it was proposed that CAHSR would share tracks with Caltrain, but that was much later. btw the CalMod project does NOT increase the maximum speed of the track. Currently the maximum speed on the track is 79 and it will remain so after being electrified. The 2022 Business Plan for CAHSR assumes that trains will go from SF to SJ in 29 minutes. I don't think that's very realistic. Currently Caltrain takes 1 hr 6 min on paper. It's 56 miles so that's (roughly) 56 mph average. To do it in 29 minutes, that's 0.5 hours, so 56/0.5=112 AVERAGE. Not max speed that's attained for a few seconds, but 112 average. So the max would have to be higher. I'm not sure how realistic it is to get 112+ maximum speed on the Caltrain tracks. There can't be grade crossings, it has to be especially straight, track that currently only supports 79 is not the right "grade" of track to take greater than 112 mph (currently it's grade 4; to go 110+, you need grade 6), there has to be special signaling, etc. Although it's pretty much always cheaper to upgrade existing track than buy new RoW and lay new track, as we learned when CAHSR stupidly went down 99, instead of going down I-5 like a normal person would, and thus couldn't go on the median, thus requiring them to purchase all kinds of private land. CAHSR is such a stupid project, don't get me started. Lifelong centrist Democrat....the centrist part meaning that I'm fiscally conservative.

@@neutrino78x "The Authority agreed to partially fund the electrification project in exchange for rights to share the track." So, they didn't have the money to electrify until CHSR came through. Thanks, CHSR! It's reasonable to use the current alignment initially and upgrade it once it becomes a bottleneck or speed restriction.

@@daniellewis1789 "e Authority agreed to partially fund the electrification project in exchange for rights to share the track."" That happened after the vote to fund electrification. "It's reasonable to use the current alignment initially and upgrade it once it becomes a bottleneck or speed restriction." It's already a speed restriction. You can only go 79 on Caltrain tracks, and the electrification project doesn't change that. It's class 4; it would have to be upgraded to class 6. I agree with you that using existing track is always better BUT if they can't do SF to SJ in 29 minutes it's a problem. btw, it's not a freight rail issue; the government owns the Caltrain track that we're talking about. Observe this list, this is taken from going through the 2022 Business Plan (the current one). The numbers are PROVIDED BY THEM, it's how long each section is supposed to take if you go through it without stopping. sf to sj, 29 sj to merced, 51 merced to bakersfield, 56 bakersfield to palmdale, 23 palmdale to burbank, 13 burbank to los angeles, 13 la to anaheim, 46 Now for our purposes LA to Anaheim is irrelevant. We only care about SF to LA. So that adds up to 185. So already that's a problem, that's over three hours (three hours and five minutes), where Prop 1A required them to make it in 2 hrs 40 minutes. But if SF to SJ is more realistic, such as the 56 it currently takes, now it's 217 for SF to LA. We can't be sure how realistic it is until we actually see them running Baby Bullets (as Caltrain calls them) with the purely electric vehicles. Maybe they can do it in like 45 minutes, which would mean they average 75. But 29 minutes definitely can't happen unless the track speed is well above 110 mph from the current 79 mph. They have another number that's not too realistic. Merced to Bakersfield in 56 minutes assumes they can zoom through those towns at 180+ mph (this is why should have done it on I-5; no towns on I-5 between Tracy and Los Angeles). A wheel on rail train makes a lot of noise at that speed. I remember the local sheriff in one of those counties saying his county doesn't consider it safe for the train to be going full speed through their area. They did have some community meetings about that a while back. But, supposedly it will be grade separated and have some noise walls....I dunno, hard to call right now. "High Speed Rail Alliance" says Merced to Bakersfield will be 90 minutes. Not sure where that's from but that makes the train a LOT slower. That would mean the whole thing (if ever completed, which it won't be, at least not to original specs) would take over 3.5 hours. It's hard to say when they're not even done with construction. Regardless, this stupid project is for all practical purposes cancelled. The Governor said Merced to Bakersfield is going to be completed, but that's it, no more construction beyond that. We simply don't have the 100 billion as a state, and the Federal Government, even with Biden, who is very pro-HSR, as President, is not interested in throwing good money after bad. I have a question, Daniel Lewis. Given that you want the 100 billion spent (which we can't, we don't have the money), how slow would be too slow in your eyes? Would 3.5 hours be too slow to justify it? That's 3.5 times slower than a jet aircraft.
