This is one of my top favourite entries ever. Still listen to it. The common linnets were my personal favourite to win Eurovision that year

Eurovision, ah how to describe Eurovision....It is the platform for every music style imaginable. You could describe it as the superbowl for music I guess. To give you an idea of the size of it. Winners have included pop, rock, ballad, opera, folk etc. The contest has been around since 1956. Famous participants include ABBA, Julio Iglesias, Celine Dion, Olivia Newton-John and Loreen. Although it started out as a serious music competition, it has had a bout of campiness in the early 2000s. This was probably because of the introduction of televoting so the artists outdid themselves to gain the favor of the audience. Lately it seems to have turned a new leaf and the music prevails once again.

This is from Eurovision song contest, the biggest song contest in the world, the entire European union competes in it, from Russia to Spain and from the United Kingdom to Israel and lately even Australia. (yes those last two are technically not European, but both Israel and Australia are part of the European Broadcast Union, therefor they are entitled to enter the contest) It's a bit of a weird contest, used to be very campy, and still is to some level, as proven by that year's winner, the bearded "lady" Conchita Wurst from Austria. (a guy in drag, nothing wrong with that but i personally wasnt a big fan of the song that won that year) The Common linnets did a great job ofc, but the song was dialed back on vocals, because both Ilse and Waylon have very powerful voices when they need that power. Now Waylon is dialed back the most in this song, to not overpower Ilse's voice and keep the harmonies tight and tiny. I suggest checking both out separate from eachother to get more of an idea of what they usually do, Ilse is very much country, where Waylon does a rawer version of country and rock. But i am sure you'll like both of them in their own element, they are really good at what they do. Thnx for the upload and react Reggie, as always very enjoyable :D

Proud of our Ilse de Lange. She has more country music. She is even from the area I come from. They should have won

What a great choice, this song! I love it so much, thank you! If I could press the Like button twice, I would!

Even-though they made the second place on this basically 48 countries competition they were a huge commercial succes all over Europe. I think they scored 16 number 1 spots and 13 top 10 scores in other countries. The song and the artist that won that year (Conchita Wurst) did not even get remotely close to these numbers. Even in the country that this artist was from (Austria) trailed them. A lot of Austrians felt that the Common Linnets deserved the win. Up until a year earlier the candidate for Holland was select through a series competitions that the best artist normally refused to compete in. So for years it was 2e /3e tier artist that got send. That year one of the best known vocalist (Anouk) in the country announced that she was interested in going but only if she could skip the competition, pick the song herself nobody would tell her how to dress and behave. The comity refused but said they would love to have her in the competition. Her response was quick, and well and she said "good with that" and withdrew her offer. When this came out their was a huge backlash against the comity and they soon realized they were fighting a loosing battle. So they agreed to her conditions. She had a pretty artistic song with very simplistic choreography that made it stand out against the bombast of the rest. It reached a respectable 10th place being one of the highest in about 20 years. The following year the comity dropped the competition permanently and asked other well known Dutch artist among them Ilse deLange and Waylon who unknown to the public were working on a album together. At first they both declined but when they talked to each other they came up with the idea why do we not go together? Scoring one of the biggest hits in the competitions even-though they did not win. :-) One of the side effects was that they got asked to write a song for the American TV called Wayword Pines. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4OgsrirZL28drg.html Last year they asked Ilse if she had a suggestion for the 2019 competition. She came up with the name Duncan Lawrence a guy she had worked with before but totally unknown. He actually won the competition. The Eurovision Song Contest is the oldest TV format in the world, held in Europe annualy since 1956. The controversial Austrian Conchita Würst beat the Common Linnets in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. Not in my opinion for the song, but more to make a statement for the LGBT community because a bearded man was dressed like a woman. He/She can sing though! As a Dutchie I have no problem with it. This song could easily have been a James Bond theme. Conchita Würst's victory wasn't controversial. It was only controversial for those who didn't accept its appearance. Since 'Rise like a phoenix' is a great song and that's why it won. Today I listen to it more than The Common Linets song.

I am a dutchie too and i like this song and preformance a lot but conchita’s song and preformance is also so great! To be honest i couldnt choose which one i liked better

You have also to understand that the Netherlands is a very small country with 17 mil inhabitants. But over the last years we have a lot of quality for the Eurovision Festival. The winner if that year was Conchita Wurst as described in the other comments, the song was Rise like a phoenix (advice: skip it). The contest is also explained in the other comnents. What I missed is that the Netherlands came in first last year after 44 years, with a song by Duncan Laurence called Arcade, which has milions of views at KZread and over 100 million times listened at Spotify. So, that song I do recommend.

The sad part of this contest is that Europe is devide in several cultures and music styles but also on politic level countries are friends and enemies. You can see this in the voting. The song must ne unique (no copy fron other songs) , may not be longer than 3 minutes and may not have a political content although that last one is sometimes done in a hidden way. Every county has to give points to 10 other countries so it is very common that eastern Europe countries do vote for their fellow/neighbor countries as also is done in the south, west and north Europe. But most of the time 1 of the best songs will win. In that year the melody and the message of Conchita Wurst did a good job to get the most votes.

You should dive into knowing what the Eurovision Song Contest is, it’s many genres of music, but it’s covertly the biggest LGBT+ party in the world, that’s why they didn’t win, but a bearded ‘lady’ named Conchita Wurst 🙈😂 with a typical drag show song. We don’t have a lot of Country or Bluegrass bands in the Netherlands, that’s Ilse DeLange’s speciality

Yeez, your commentors are really of crappy about Conchita here. Yes this song is good, it's one of my all time favorites. But don't listen to these comments to skip the winner. Conchita Wurst won with Rise Like a Phoenix, a powerful balad, kind of a Bond vibe. It's a good song, with better styling and stageing than this one and an uplifting message that propably went straight into the hearts of the a lot of the watching and voting public around the world. Maybe Calm after the storm fits better on random playlists or on the radio while Rise like a phoenix fits better live on a beautifully lit stage.

This song very clearly shows the essence of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is by far the best song of it's year, but was beaten by a bearded drag queen who was good.. and so was the song, but not THIS good. In the meanwhile, despite the quality of the song, it would have likely not even been second without the great visuals. Eurovision is first and foremost about telling a story, creating a buzz, being flamboyant .. with also has some singing..

The winner was a woman with a beard or it was a guy in dress.

The song that beat them was... horrible. But 2nd place is not bad considering it is the ESC what stand for mediocre performances if your lucky. You should listen to the 2013 performance by Anouk from the Netherlands. She paved the way for other good singer song writers to compete in the contest with much better songs.
