Call of Cthulhu - The Lost Expedition Review

Review and GM tips for the Call of Cthulhu scenario The Lost Expedition, published by Goodman Games. It's a pulpy action/adventure set in the 1920's.
UPDATE: Goodman Games no longer sells their Age of Cthulhu line, which breaks my heart. If you're interested in picking this scenario up, you might check Ebay, Amazon, or other means for a used edition.

    "Exploring and sporting expedition, under experienced guidance, leaving England June to explore rivers central Brazil, if possible ascertain fate Colonel Percy Fawcett, abundant game, big and small; exceptional fishing; room two more guns; highest references expected and given." that was a real advert in the London Times, one of the men who applied was Peter Flemming, brother of Ian, his book Brazilian Adventure (1933) covers this, he also travelled from Moscow to Peking in 1934, One's Company, then from Peking to India in 1935, Travels in Tartary, all 3 are excellent sources & a good read

    "Troodon" is pronounced with three vowels -- "troh-oh-don". It's a real species of dromaeosaurids (raptors and the like), thought to have the largest brain to body size ratio and thus the highest intelligence among all the dinosaurs.

    Wanna screw with your players' heads? Before the T-Rex reveal, have the "Scientist recreation of T-Rex Roar" on standby. As your players are walking along, seeing the weird dinos, occasionally play that sound (requires some precise volume control, so if you have a laptop in your keeper area, feel free to manipulate the volume) to show distance. And let your players know that they don't *just* hear that sound: they *feel* that sound. Then occasionally play it again, this time a little louder. Just ratchet that paranoia up to 11. Then do the big fight with Mr. Bad News himself. Worth the torment

    For those unaware, T-Rex didn't roar. It was a ultra-low sound that wasn't an "open mouth vocalization," so think less roar and more bass feedback from concert speakers

I found a copy on Amazon and one-click ordered that crap to make sure I got it (one copy left warning on their page), but I can't help but wonder if their was a rights issue or something, cause this seems like a super short time for this kind of arrangement to run out.

    Yeah the dinosaurs and Elder Things were what sold me on it. Most plot hols like that are easy to plug if you know about them prior to the game

    Yes, I take total responsibility for the timeline goof. I can't recall it exactly, but I was trying to weigh reasonable time differences in 1920/30s for communication and travel. Clearly, I dropped the ball at one point that neither my editor or I noticed. I do hope you eventually pick up the PDF and give it a shot. And another big thanks to Seth for a fantasticly produced and well thought out review.

So I can see why they may not immidietely jump out to writers as the Eldritch monsters to use

  • @SSkorkowsky

    @SSkorkowsky

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sure thing. The letter is extremely hard to read even if you can read cursive with English as your first language, so I can imagine it's far more difficult for you. This is the best I can do (a couple words I had to make an educated guess at). December 30, 1923 - Relocated to new dig sit right at the base of The Singing Hills. The granite elevations are layered in hues of gold, red, black and tan, beautiful and fascinating. We sent leg and hip fossils from a small theropod to Peking but the larger finds have been ferried to Pyongyang to be shipped home. January 2, 1924 - A new amazing find. A sauropod with unprecedented features clearly need to help it forage for difficult to reach or difficult to eat plants. Some of the camels were stolen by some of the porters last night. The cowards are fleeing because of the ghost stories they tell about these hills. I’ve warned the other porters that I plan to shoot thieves should anyone want to consider stealing more camels. January 5, 1924 - The winds have shifted - and I now know why these are called The Singing Hills. The winds whip though eddies in the rocks like breath through a flute. Kent has discovered a cave, not too far from the camp, that seems to hum as the wind blows. It sets my teeth to rattling. I think we’ll check it out for fossils tomorrow. January 6, 1924 - All of my previous discoveries pale in comparison to what is inside that cave. The winds play hell with it though, and it’s damn hard to think straight in there. I’ve had enough of that damn hum. Father Armell has strengthened my resolve and we are praying for the winds to cease soon. More tomorrow.

    My reviews are for games I ran for our group. We split them action/investigative, just because that's what we like. So there's a higher percentage of action adventures among my module reviews than what all is out there. A couple classic-style ones that I'm looking forward to reading are "Sun Spots" and "The Dare." They're not officially released yet (both Kickstarters) but look extremely promising.
