Call of Cthulhu: Horror on the Orient Express | Review and Page-Through

Ойындар

Jeff sits down to share his thoughts about the new reformatted edition of the classic Call of Cthulhu campaign, Horror on the Orient Express, from Chaosium Inc. The two hardcovers total 768 pages and are available as a set for $89.99. Is this essentially a must have campaign for Call of Cthulhu Keepers or all stripes? Or will your sanity be shaken as you scream in horror attempting to run this massive roleplaying campaign? You'll find out!

As beautiful as that book is, I own the original box set and find having chapters in separate booklets to be much more user friendly.

Thank you so much for your video! Very helpful 😊 We just recently started to get Call of Cthulhu content in Ukrainian language and I hope to see one day such books translated also. But for now I’m thinking about having it in English ☺️

I would also just like reading these as a source material books, but I still wish they do The Orient Express in an updated full-colour books - but it still one of the large campaigns favourates especially if you love the all the period settings & Orient Express settings. Love the books cover art also. Have you got a top 5 of of campaign adventure books?

It's a hell of a lot easier to run than Masks! and they don't include the amazing handout (the Simulacrum and train carriages)

I have the 2014 Boxset and its chockful of awesome stuff in it...yeah the hooks might be weak but making hooks are super easy and evolving it ( devolving??) to make it into a Cthulhu Mythos driven is also pretty easy to do..remember this is REPRINT of the 2014 boxset and not an actual 7th edition set ( even though a 7th edition conversion rules booklet was included in the 2014 boxset) and Keepers will still need to look at which rules were changed up. Also rework is always a thing for us GM/Keepers when it comes to TTRPGs, especially reprints...you Keepers got this!!!!!!

I've played all of The Masks of Nyarlathotep twice, and I love Call of Cthulhu. Do you think this campaign can be played by reading one adventure at a time, or do you have to read all the 700 pages first?

Chaosium has always been good about providing synopses and that's the case here too. I can easily see someone running the New York portion without having to read the entire adventure. ~Jeff

@@Thegaminggang MoN is an investigation campaign where PCs can go wherever they want and get to know numerous NPCs to interact with. IMHO if you don't have a general knowledge of the campaign, as a Keeper you will have a hard time staying consistent and giving the right clues. I wondered if it was the same for Horror on Orient Express, or if instead the more railroaded structure allowed for a more gradual approach. Thanks anyway for the reply!

Sorry, i saw this comment on my phone and didn't notice it was to the HoOE video rather than MoN. For HoOE you could probably get away with the earlier chapters without having dug into the entire adventure. BUT this isn't a complete modern refresh like MoN was and I'd certainly recommend reading the entire two volumes before trying to run it.

I have an idea of a game mastering approach based on one aspect of your description. You could have different gaming groups in different eras, or times. So different groups of characters that uncover different facets of this story, including that epilog. You could have a modern based group that "finishes" the story in modern Istanbul. Just an idea

While a good idea, I think it would be nearly impossible to pull off seeing that A) most Keepers only have a single group of gamers they play with and B) if they did have access to multiple groups, each of those groups would want to be playing the main campaign and not a flashback or flash forward adventure which doesn't stand on its own. ~ Jeff

Good video but every time you pronounce Cthulhu I can only picture Stewie from Family Guy saying Cool Whip.
