CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian, spends his days in his family's 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio's sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

@@michaelvillanueva233 AIDS is horrible, but nowhere as bad as what could be only the result of heterosexual copulation. That would be the too many kids whose needs can't be met by their opposite sex creators such as food, shelter, and guidance to develop into decent individuals. The results are those whose only contribution to society among other social ills is criminal violence, and the damage and costs to the people among them. Most of these people match your skin color or are other POC. In light of this, your accusation of ignorance is nauseating, and with those with a strong stomach laughable. And anytime someone with your complexion is called out on this, you have the really lame and totally expected accusation made about these truths being voiced as racism. Sometimes that works, but not everytime as with this reply should indicate. I hope you got that!

The book gives slightly more details. Oliver, in my opinion, could never fully come to terms with being in love with Elio-he justified his own decision to live a parallel life because, for all his bravado, charisma, and being okay with everything, he was not okay with himself and that is equally heartbreaking.

That was anything but a happy ending imho. You can tell that both of them are still crazy about each other, but after so many years, time restrained them to express themselves to each other. They were just talking about the past and their happiest moments. Their love was unfulfilled. Plus Oliver got his life kind of sorted out. But nothing was mentioned about Elio's love life. It's crazy sad if Elio is still not over his first true love after so many years. Oliver is going home tomorrow and that what happened that summer is gonna go back to cherished memories. Add to all that, the atmosphere of that day in the ending. The fact that the environment was described exactly as it was that summer except now many characters are dead makes the last pages haunting.

That last scene killed me. I watched it at the movies during a Friday evening, there was maybe about 50-60 people in the theatre and usually when a movie rolls credits everyone leaps out their chairs to try and get out as fast as possible and beat the rush after the last scene in this no one dared even breathe. you could have heard pin drop in that theatre, everyone was in awe. I've never experienced anything like it, it gave me chills

Most of the "false outrage" expressed to (and about) this movie is by people too closed minded to even watch it... which pretty much sums them up (or, at least, their maturity levels). If they watched the movie taking into consideration all of the elements of the story (not just the one that sticks in their craw, like a thorn in a paw), they'd see how beautiful and true it is. It's a story of first love between 2 highly intelligent and unique people. It's not trying to be anything else than a snapshot of a formative summer.

Fe H Yet here you are whining like a bitch, to quote Mildred Hayes, about it. So yeah, the odds that you aren't offended are not in your favor. Also, the peach moment has always been integral to the story to developing Elio as a character and his ultimate insecurity over his desire, much like how the baby getting it's neck snapped and cannibalized Is crucial to driving mother to her breaking point and burning the house/earth to ash.

I love this film. I was 17 in 1983, like Elio, and I remember that summer very well: radio songs, cars and all. I went camping with my friends on the beaches of Sardinia. The best moments were when I went to sleep in my sleeping bag after smoking pot and I looked up to the starry sky, so very many stars. Before falling asleep I recalled the moments I spent with my boyfriend one year earlier and I felt ecstatic and painful joy, and sent kisses to his face which I saw in the sky . The story had gone by but the wonderful stars were there like an eternal promise. Elio brought me back to those moments. I love this film.

Some people might think the movie is slow because in the book Elio is very naughty in his thoughts, he starts thinking about sex, and very graphic, at almost the same time he saw him for the first time. However, there is no voice-over in the movie, so we don't know what he is thinking, in the book the poor boy is horny all the time. The movie is much more delicate if compared to the book. 10/10

Danilo Rodrigues I agree. He was very horny in the book--I would say he's sexually fluid. He really enjoyed his time with Marzia in the book as well as the lady in Rome. The book was about Elio discovering himself and ultimately creating a lovely bond with Oliver. In the movie, I didn't quite get that from Elio.

I’m going to comment more on this. Most of the movie I was waiting for something tragic to happen to one of the guys. This movie made me so happy, even though, you know... it says something that I’ve been conditioned to expect tragedy for gay characters in film. It shouldn’t be that way. I’m still so incredibly happy, I keep tearing up thinking about their relationship, how beautiful it was and what a privilege it was to be able to share in that story. I will be buying it as soon as it’s available.

For everyone saying that the 24 year old protagonist is preying on the 17 year old. You guys are forgetting that this film is based in Italy where the Age consent is 14 So the older guy is not doing anything illegal. Even at that he’s not with a 14 y/o boy. He’s 17 and the other one is 24. The age gap isn’t that big. People relax!

The film is set in italy based on a book set in italy and the main CHARACTERS (except Oliver) are Italian so in the context of the movie it’s basically following what our friend said about the age of consent and what not. This begs the question why in all hell are you talking about the laws binding the culling of homosexuals when it is not relevant in any situation concerning this movie?

This is my favorite movie of all time. Nothing comes close to making me feel so many different emotions. Also, I love that we get a gay movie where they guys don’t end up gay bashed, diseased or where someone got kicked out or rejected, they weren’t a joke, they weren’t hated on, it was just a real and beautiful relationship. It feels amazing to be portrayed in cinema and be taken seriously, not a side show or the goofy friend. I hate seeing stereotypes, we aren’t all queens with the most stylish wardrobes and a degree in interior design. Easily my favorite movie and I think it’s a huge step for gay cinema, I hope more film makers take note. Cheers!

I was expecting so much from this film after hearing so many great things about it. Despite the recent Armie Hammer allegations, I put them aside because I am a lover of art, and went with an open mind and heart watching this film. My opinion: The film has spectacular cinematography. The mood is unlike any other film I have seen. It has a very European, raw, feel to it physically, and emotionally. The nudity also gives this film so much more realness. The performance of Elio's parents is seriously breathtaking. They are both *outstanding* actors. And I LOVE the colors throughout the film, and how they change as the main character Elio changes. It is very metaphorical. Last but not least, Timothy's performance made my heart melt. He is the most talented young actor I have seen in a very long time. I could relate to his restless, curious, innocent, eager, playful, and intense feelings. What ruined the film for me is Armie's performance. I found myself being analytical of his performance because his character reminded me of his every day self in interviews, and in other movies. To me, that is a tall-tale sign that someone is not the best actor. When I watch a film, I don't want to be reminded of who the actors played in other roles. Or thinking they talk the same, behave the same, or have the same vibe as their other roles or even their public persona. I am not sure if I am just biased after it has been shared with the world that Armie is not only a cannibal, but also potentially abusive towards past partners. This film would have been 10/10 if they would have had a different actor for Oliver, but I can't really think of who would fit the role? The film overall would be a masterpiece if it wasn't for my perception of Armie not being on Timothy or the parent's acting level. Also, the dad's monologue is probably words to keep in one's heart for life. Very profound.

I have liked the subsequent films in the series on a declining scale (though I still like them). If this film is similar, then they should not do more of them. Budget... $2.5 million. Before Sunset... BOT... $16 million. Budget... $2.7 million. Before Midnight... BOT $23.4 million. Budget... $3.0 million. And those numbers are only the theater ticket sales. There is no revenue from VCR/DVD/On Demand, or broadcast rights included. Yeah... I'm sure money had nothing to do with it. smh

The most important point of this review is to see it in the theater so you can appreciate the AMAZING cinematography and the way that Luca touches all 5 senses. Michael Stuhlbarg's monologue at the end is the father we all wish we could have. Armie Hammer was brilliant with the number of levels he brought to this role. Timothee Chalamet - WOW They way Luca directed him in that closing scene.... with the change of expressions.. and that one look directly at the camera..... just to let you know that he was going to be OK.

I think people are being extra wary of the age gap because of what has been happening in hollywood lately. It's a shame because I think had it been any other time, people would just ignore it. It's such a good movie. Like, c'mon. If you did not feel anything after watching, maybe you didn't get it, or you're trying to prove something. It's one of those movies that left me thinking for days. I've read the book afterwards because I was so intrigued. Then I rewatched it again. I understood many scenes I didn't get before. And then I rewatched it again and again, and I still keep getting "Aha!" moments from noticing tiny details in almost every scenes. It's genius.

It took place in Italy, and they have a different consent age. Not everyone has to follow America's guideline, especially when it has the highest teenage pregnancy rate among the developed countries. So no, Taug1000 doesn't have loose moral. They just don't happen to be overly-egocentric like many of the whinny Americans do.

The fly at the end is completely voluntary. It is part of the many "memento mori" of the movie. Spot all the flies in the movie, and you'll see it's a recurring metaphor for time and the inevitability of loss and decay. It's a reference to Renaissance paintings, like the serenade scene with the guitar, and all the fruits (references to "natures mortes" and "memento mori" of the Renaissance). It goes with Oliver's research on Heidegger and ancient Greeks too. There's stuff in this movie everyone understands perfectly, the feelings, and there's also stuff for the cultured that are so fucking good as well, you have no idea.

There seems to be a lot of Americans on here struggling to realise that their country where the age of consent can be as high as 18 is the odd one out not Italy/Europe where the age of consent is around the 15 yrs age.

In Italy - where the story is set - the age of consent is 14. So within the culture being depicted in the movie, there is nothing creepy about a 17 year old and a 24 year old having romantic feelings toward each other.

I agree with every single word said here and it echoes almost all other reviews i watched and read. it also echoes what I felt watching the movie (twice so far). which is another reason to love this masterpiece. it is so clear in its message that the take away is universal. much like a brilliant professor walking into class and teaching so clearly that all of the different students walk away with the same understanding, cause he reached all of them. this movie though very subtle manages to deliver its message so clearly and the only blockade is if the receiver refuses to open up to it. it was not just a movie... it was a life transforming lesson taught beautifully and very clearly

Great opinions. At the beginning of Feb 18, we have now heard so many background stories from the cast. In the last year, Timothee Chalomet has matured under the guidance of Armie and Luca. This movie so closely resembles my emotional life, and I too don't really want a sequel. I now know after half a century (yes) that this sadness too will pass. So moving and wonderful and is probably the best movie I have ever experienced.

I watched the film and read the book, both are exceptional in their own medium. The film brought the life of what was written in book especially the characters of Elio and Oliver. This is the best film of the year and too sad it so happen that it was shown only in limited theaters. Call Me By Your Name and The Front Runner(novels/books )are among my favorite collection books. on my shelve. I love the intensity of the acting of both actors especially , no dialogue but the body language.

What do you mean "he's everything that Elio isn't"? They're both really smart, book worms and have success with women. If by "everything" you mean Oliver is tall and hunky, that's a meaningless and, more importantly to your point, singular difference.

how did Timothee Chalamet do it, how did that end credits shot work? apparently they installed a camera in the wall above the fireplace, no operator, and he listened to the song, Visions of Gideon, through an earpiece to mirror its structure. Timothee called it an 'acting experiment'.
