Call for GSCE results to be postponed as exam confusion continues - BBC News

There's more uncertainty for hundreds of thousands of A Level students, and for children waiting for their GCSE results.
The exams regulator, Ofqual withdrew its guidance on how pupils could appeal their grades hours after making it public.
And the former Conservative Education Secretary Kenneth Baker has said the government should stop “digging a hole” and postpone the announcement of GCSE results.
The Government has been under fire since A Level grades allocated by Ofqual were announced in England - following the cancellation of the exams due to the coronavirus pandemic. Almost 40% of the grades were lower than teachers’ assessments.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by education editor Branwen Jeffreys and political correspondent Jonathan Blake.

My child’s grades where not estimated they were evaluated she had to do tests from her teachers in all subjects based on previous A level exams. Yet because she goes to a college with lower results her grades are down if the average down is 40%. So many socially disadvantaged children’s lives ruined. Remember that some marks have gone up so more than 40% have gone down. Quote I believe from winston Churchill “we will have the working class people grovelling at our feet”. Well done Boris

The process they took was actually priceless. It's such a mess. 1. Firstly what they didn't even take into account is that not EVERY school sat mock exams NOR did they all sit the same exam. Some schools made their mock exams harder/easier. Some students did not even SIT EXAMS. 2. You cannot predict or think about what a student is going to get and then rank them. Just because someone is working at a 6 throughout the year, it doesn't mean they will get a 6. It's unpredictable. They could end up with a 9 for example. That's the reason this process is such a big issue, because you will never know what grade a person will get without that person sitting the EXAMS. It's basically testing the intelligence of 'not so able' students and students that go to a public school vs private schools. 3. It's unfair that the algorithm is choosing our grades. It's taking into account of the prior attainment of last year's 11. The GCSEs themselves is such such a mess aswell because they are made based on last years year 11s prior attainment. That's unfair to the year before and the year about to sit the exam. 4. Now they want to DELAY GCSE exams results. So we have to wait until September. QUICK UPDATE: Northern Ireland are now using predicted grades for Gcses. Not yet sure about england. What is your take on using teachers predictions QUICK UPDATE: Wales have also announced they are using predicted grades. Still waiting on England.

  • @dijabelle8348

Im not against what you are saying but our grades are not based on the attainment of the 2019 cohort. It is to compare the 2020 cohort to the 2019 cohort; if they find that the prior attainment of 2020 year is higher they will push up the grades of that year because that shows that the students are more able (and vice versa).

As much as I agree with most of this, reason 2 is flawed since 1 exam could be an immaculate representation of someone's intelligence. This government is so hypocritical and incompetent. For example the Dominic Cummings effect, "following the science" then cancelling the press briefings, when the science opposes there stupid decisions, exam results, Boris not taking coronavirus seriously at the start like his kindred spirit Trump, etc. I know the human race can be bad, unkind, ignorant, and stupid to say the least but the pandemic has only heightened that.

Predicted grades turn out to be a complete disaster and the only fair way is to have students to sit the actual exam. Can this be done? Of course it can be. 3 to 4 months from now, make ALL students to sit the real A level exam and delay starting year 1 courses at university till November. Reschedule University terms by compressing course curriculum, cancelling reading weeks and shorten Easter, Chrismtas and Summer holidays to 2 weeks each. Yes, this is alot of hassle but this can be done and is the fairest way possible.

The problem is teachers over-predicting students grades. The algorithm calculated the grades that a school should have gotten based on the history of the school, the school then ranked all their students according to mocks and other assessments. Then they distributed the available grades created by the algorithm in order of the ranking that the school did!
