The interview with Tom Merrick: • Fitness Should Be FUN-...
***
While I love mixing different training styles and think doing so is fundamentally the key to optimal performance, I still have a special soft spot for calisthenics. In fact, if I was forced to choose just one modality to train with… I’d probably pick calisthenics.
That’s exactly what I told Tom Merrick - the Bodyweight Warrior - when he asked me the same question on his podcast!
So, why calisthenics? I love bodyweight training because you can use it anywhere. You don’t need any equipment or even a gym membership: a random field will do just fine.
Bodyweight training is perfectly scalable to any ability level, and it will increase your strength to weight ratio. You won’t get big and heavy. You’ll get powerful.
It’s also perfectly capable of packing on muscle AND strength AND even developing the legs. Contrary to popular belief.
Moreover, though, bodyweight training will begin to teach you about yourself as you attempt more challenging movements. Calisthenics is a journey and an education.
For example: you can’t do a perfect handstand without developing your overhead mobility, without learning to control your body in an inverted position, without contracting your glutes, without depressing your scapula.
Some of these terms might be completely foreign to anyone who hasn’t trained in this way! But the end result of chasing these goals is that you develop so much MORE than just a handstand.
And the reward is a movement that looks almost superhuman.

Hey Adam, I appreciate a lot of the footage you put in this video because you're not absolutely perfect at all the movements. Your arms are shaking during pushing up into the handstand and you were shaking when doing the pistol squat while balancing on the fence. Some of us see you as basically incredible at everything (I used to when I was younger at least) so it's great to show proof that you also have to learn and struggle through this stuff.

Calisthenics for me is pure freedom and points me towards exactly what I want to achieve with my body, wherever I am and in whatever situation. It allows me to be the 7 year old that I still am in my head and clamber around anything whilst pulling a few tricks here and there, and the fighter that I want to be; a fighter similar to grant. I absolutely love it and I primarily have you to thank for it. Thank you, Adam, so much.

I think people often forget that calisthenics isn’t just the basic compound lifts like push ups,sit ups and pull ups. Nor is it only skill work like Handstands, planches and back levers. It’s really anything you want it to be when it comes to training your upper body. You want to build as much muscle as possible using only bodyweight? Get some rings and do isolation exercises like Ring face pulls,Y-raises, pelican curls and tricep extensions etc. You can also use parallettes when doing handstand push ups and push ups, the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Same here. Started doing lots of pushups and situps as a teen, and when I got my first bench I could bench press over 125lbs for reps. Got into weights for a long time thinking I “outgrew” calisthenics. Fast forward to my mid twenties and my elbows and shoulders were so beat up I could hardly train anymore. Realized pushups didnt bother them so much and started doing them a lot. Then went a few years only doing pushups, pullups and lunges. After a year or so my shoulders and elbows felt great again and I was in better shape than I had been for years. I’m 34 now and the bread and butter to my training, like you, is calisthenics and I’m still feeling great.

Calisthenics is by far the most fun form of training. I used to care a lot about by appearance and that was the only thing which motivated me to go to the gym. It worked out great at first when I got my newbie gains, but when I suddenly stopped getting bigger muscles it killed all my motivation to work out. I really had to force myself to the gym just so that my looks wouldn't deteriorate . Luckily I made a friend in high school who always brought me to a local calisthenics park where we did lots of pull ups and dips. We started out just doing it for fun while listening to hype music, but then discovered that we could challenge ourselves by improving our form. It's been 5 years since then and today nothing brings me as much joy as hitting a really strict chest to bar pull up

When my training principles are alligned with The Bioneer's recent uploads, it's how I know I'm doing something right haha! Calisthenics is such an amazing training modality. I started with it through Jaxblades TLTTz videos and have picked it back up the past few months due to wanting to develop more skills like with gymnastic rings, plyometrics, and handstands. Just that shift has helped me stick to it longer than most other methods like weightlifting or strictly working out for weight loss.

The only reason more people don't do calisthenics is because it's not really popular in most of the Southern Hemisphere. In places like Russian, France, Spain, Calisthenics is super respected as a sport not like it is in America. I think Americans (I'm Americans, so I'm using the US as an example) who do Calisthenics should do their best to try and represent the sport as other parts of the world do. There's also no good knowledge about calisthenics available for primarily English speakers, all the good information on how to properly train is in French or Russian. Please reply to this with whether or not you agree, because the more research I've done on the topic, the more I realize Americans don't even do the sport, but when they do, they have no fking idea what they're talking about lmao. P.S. I haven't even watched to Bioneer video yet, so if he goes over this I'm going to look very stupid lmao.

To be quite frank with you, notwithstanding cultural reasons, America (and England) have abnormally high body fat levels , and to be fair a higher average height, both of which make Calisthenics less appealing. Not excusing it, I just think pragmatically though that’s why more people avoid it for fear of being humbled

@@KinGSlayEr-y6v Thanks honestly a really smart and thought out take. America has a population with 41% of all people being obese, somewhere like France is only 17%, and calisthenics is far more popular there. I would give measurements for Russia where calisthenics is most popular, but I couldn't find an obesity measurement 🤷‍♂

I got into Xeros after breaking my foot pretty badly a couple of years ago and really like them, also Inov8 F-Lite 245s. The F-Lite 245s aren't fully barefoot trainers but if I do any running on manmade surfaces the break area sings a sad tune.

No downside I would say to them. People could say that with less cushioning and more ground feel, means less protection of your feet when you step on something unpleasant, but you also risk hurting your feet stepping on something unpleasant in normal shoes. On top of the that, the slower over time hurting your feet with regular shoes, I'd argue compounds the damage to your feet and the pros of barefoot shoes outweighs the cons. Mankind has been wearing minimalist/barefoot footwear/no footwear for way longer than we and our ancestors have during modern times and have performed great feats and battles in it as well. My foot health, coordination, balance and athleticism have dramatically improved since working out barefoot and since converting all my footwear to barefoot/minimalist style years ago.

8:21 What is there actually to the idea that one could become slower or overly large from weightlifting? Isn't muscle size so difficult to attain, that no one becomes too large without really going for it (and/or taking drugs)? And the problem of becoming slower, is that not a matter of mobility practice, usually stretching of some sort, that could be missing from a calisthenics routine just as it may be ignored by people lifting free weights? Edit: though, advanced calisthenics exercises to combine strength with mobility pretty well, certainly better than just adding weight to a bar.
