Caliph of Baghdad (Overture) - Boieldieu

Музыка

The 'opera comique' "The Caliph of Baghdad" was premiered in Paris in 1800, and was celebrated throughout Europe, possibly because of its exotic subject matter. The current performance was part of a concert to celebrate the popularity of such works with orchestras and groups of diverse instruments, often based on guitars and mandolins, which were popular in Queensland in the last two decades of the 19th century and into the early 20th century.
Duncan has determined, as part of his Master of Music Research studies that an early performance of this this piece was by a Swiss touring group of some 14 members. the 'Jungfrau Kapelle', at Rockhampton (Queensland) in August 1888.
It would not be unreasonable to assume that the overture would not have been performed very often in the past century, which gives this performance some historical relevance.
It is a charming piece and is well-suited to this arrangement by Duncan Gardiner for the quartet.

Hi to all.... As I have posted elsewhere, Joel and I have been busy earning our livings after years of study, and have had to limit our playing together somewhat. We really enjoy it when we get to perform, and we expect that other opportunities will occur such as Duncan Gardiner's recent journey back to the early days of Queensland musical activities. Creating interesting videos has always been a challenge and we don't believe that everything we play is suitable for KZread. I have been considering posting some earlier performances which at the time were considered to be less interesting for the audience, but in retrospect they may see the light of day yet. Many thanks for all the positive comments ... they are really appreciated. Marissa.

While I am not a mandolin player I have enjoyed these performances especially of Joel and yourself. I am an aged classical guitar tragic (didn't start to learn until I was 66) and wish I had at least a tiny smidgen of your talents. Please upload the performances to which you allude . I am sure they will be more than well received

Absolutely beautiful !. A joy. Such delightful sounds !. Splendid ! x . Just an afterthought, it would be so nice if the video, had included just a little more time to take in the applause for the artists. So often the end of terrific performances are truncated x x.

Hi Peter..... you may be interested in this link kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3eszMGJXbDKqrQ.html It's from Duncan's channel and uses 3 cameras. All the videos I have posted over the years were shot and edited by my Dad and only one camera was used with some post-production to keep them visually interesting where possible. Lighting in churches is always a challenge and usually isn't very flattering. Many thanks for watching and your comments. Regards... Marissa.

No way dude! You may suggest that Marrissa's playing has taken a back burner to the realities that be, but that can always change later.... Go pick on some silver spoon spoiled brat who never was made to walk the line! Nothing worse in this world than that. Nice piece, a little mellow, but hey! Marrissa and Joel will bust out more I'm sure. Congratulations on your hard work! It will reflect in "your" music!
