I love that Maggie WON an Oscar for this.

This movie would've been a lot better if it had just been about those two - they were definitely the best thing about it. Great acting from them both, and the writing both witty and funny as well as surprisingly deep.

In the NBC movie London Suite, these characters were played by Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Clarkson. They tried hard but it just wasn't the same.

Sir Michael says in his early days he had trouble getting cast because he was young, blond & pretty, people thought he was gay (hoped?). I became a fan when he mentioned in his memoirs that NYC in the '70's was the party capital of the world (Studio 54 et al) because of the gay population (so true pre-AIDS). That he would play such a closeted character as Sidney - & play him so well! - is yet another reason to love him. Plus, he & Sir Roger Moore were friends. Envious!

Imagine if someone named "Eggs Benedict" was staying in the hotel. I could watch a play based on their characters and the banter back and forth. Both legendary actors.

Exactly . Insightful. The tempo is breezy each in their own world but they do care enough about each other that they hear each but both are self involved almost miserable in a difficult industry ! Neil Simon like Shakespeare needs intelligent ,dedicated craftman to really get performed well !

Watching this now on TCM (thank you, TCM! again & again). Saw it in theatres, so much better written & acted than I remembered (& I remembered it as being good). Jane Fonda is brilliant, as she fights for her daughter - & gives her up - who knew Neil Simon was a feminist?!

I saw this movie 40 yrs ago.... This is where she just lost her best actress nomination and this is where she needs reassurance But like all of us men we ignore these kind of moments.

Probably a bit of PC box ticking. Unknown black actors played pimps but Hollywood presented black stars like Cosby as ultra respectable, wealthy, successful, great guys. Ironic really, as Cosby and Pryor were both discredited later, Cosby for far more sinister reasons.

What a toxic pair. Let me out of here! Hard to watch two people needing to talk to each other but throwing verbal darts instead. Very sad.

Too many US references for a just off the plane English couple. Steel belted what? These roles should be played by Yanks, the dialogue is too American.

Ironic you'd grab the 'steel belted radial tyre' line, as steel belted radial tires were first introduced in Britain in 1950, and were pretty much standard equipment on cars in Britain by 1960. It was 1970 before the first US car came with steel belted radials. That reference marks the couple as being more British than their US hosts.

Well it was written by an American - the late, great Neil Simon, who penned many classic American comedies including 'The Odd Couple' and 'Barefoot in the Park'.

Love Maggie Smith, but this was just horrid acting from both.
