Im from Bakersfield and have always been interested in the varied geology of this part of California. I first traveled to the Carrizo Plain after reading about offset stream channels along strike-slip faults such as the San Andreas. The Carrizo Plain is an excellent place to view these both in person or on Google Earth and Wallace Creek is the most spectacular one. You can walk along the fault and see other channels that have been offset due to movement along the fault over the years. Ive gone several times. I love it. But If you travel there in the summer as I have, prepare for extreme heat and virtually no shade. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, sun glasses, a wide brimmed hat, some snacks and fill your gas tank up as you leave the nearest community with a gas station which can be 45 min to an hour away.

You will always know if a California salt flat is dry because it will have land speed racers on it.

I had no idea Huell was a real person. I thought he was just a character played by James Adomian on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast.
