California is offering drivers money to test its alternative to the gas tax

For decades, California has depended on taxes from gasoline and diesel to provide most of the money for road repairs, but as the state pivots more towards electric and hybrid vehicles, officials are trying to figure out how to replace that income. trib.al/ojb9iVI

@@BakoSooner You assume that the CA government which we know has been negligent for years is telling you that they need more money so they post this BS statistic saying that EVs have been taking over and that there are not enough funds. Sorry but when I look out at the roads I still don't see enough EVs that would actually make this huge of a dent and shortfall that they are claiming to the road budget. Keep the politicians and the companies honest and have them make due with the current funds we got. This is not an EV issue....its a scapegoat for their mismanagement of funds.

If you drive 3x as much as the 5000 lb land yacht you are in fact causing more wear. My minivan only moves for family functions when 5-8 people are loaded into it - less than 1k miles a year. Those people driving huge 8 passenger SUVs on their commute to work already pay more when they have to fill 25-40 gallon tanks instead of a small 14 gal tank. CA just looking for ways to keep feeding the tax beast despite more and more people working part/full time from home.

If you haul 8 passengers that more than likely weight over 100 pounds in America that's being generous.. and you have 40 gallons of gas that alone weighs 240 lbs with the "800" obviously over 1000 lbs with your passengers with your car and the 5k land rover you are closer to 7k pounds on the road vs a 4 door car that's about 3,800 lbs on the road full tank and full car. Where in the world does getting taxed by the mile sound any better than being taxed by the gallons? You get more miles to the gallon if you drive slow enough or if your car is fuel efficient. Being taxed by the miles is just cutting out any kind of fuel efficiency and making it pointless because you're now being taxed on how long of a distance you drive per day. It is completely worse than what we have now. Also, they might entice you with a low tax rate for the first few years so people don't complain and we get used to it and then they'll raise the taxes or add more to it as they always do like they did for the gas tax.

This has nothing to do with EVs....this is just years and years of mismangement of funds. Adding any taxes is an excuse for the incompetency of the CA state government on how it handles its funds. Do we really thing proposing such a high tax will benefit everyone? No it just gives the corporations more money to waste and not fix roads. 30 cents a mile is ridiculous. A 300 mile "tank" would cost you $90. Noooo it doesn't cost that much to repair roads when you have hundreds of thousands of cars that have to use that same road everyday and extrapolate that with each car paying 30 cents.

States are not granted the right to tax the exercise of a fundamental right to travel or the mode of travel. It is repugnant to the Constitution and undermines the nation. U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Crandall vs NV..so no authority to tax or burden a Constitutional right.
