Why does Freemasonry have a such terrible reputation in the community? Everyone I talk to says “never trust a Freemason”

Everyone I talk to in my local community say consistently that Freemasons are some of the most unethical men in this country. They say avoid them like the plague. No wonder no one wants to join freemasonry.

Everyone I talk to says to “avoid Freemasons like the plague”. I understand why. I don’t know why anyone would want to join freemasonry with the bad reputation it has in the community.
