    I’ve taken rides on this thing for almost 30 years, and it’s wonderful to see it’s in better shape than when I was a kid (even tho I do miss the driver narration). Long live the Calico Mine Train!

    There´s this weird fascination with these old Animatronics i have. The movement is so nonhuman, but also haunting at the same time. Can´t really describing it better, but i love it.

    Very very true. Its in my top 5 right there with the Timber Mountain Log Ride when I go to Knotts. Screens and technology are cool but this old school dark ride is still classic and one of the best. The technology behind this when it opened was crazy with how many animatronics there were.

    Could you provide some info on operating the train? It seems to me to be mostly braking, as the layout is on a continual downgrade, correct? I'm also curious about the upstop rails they've put in place... was derailment a common occurrence prior to their installation?

  • @LibertyHound78

    @LibertyHound78

    Nope we operated speed and braking. There is a lift mechanism on the track about half way through the ride to bring the train up to the upper level. Train is completely controlled by the operator, except for when it engages with the lift.

    These old school dark rides are like a window into the past. Whenever you ride them, you can seriously _feel_ the energy they have. I truly hope this ride never changes. To change it would be to destroy history at this point. Preserve this ride exactly as it was from the day it first opened.

  • @AbandonedMines11

    As one who explores and documents abandoned mines in the American Southwest, I can definitely confirm that everything depicted in this ride is very authentic. I rode this a few years ago and was really impressed with the level of detail and how accurate things were. That large room the others have mentioned in their comments is what the miners would have referred to as a “stope.“ A stope is the large chamber that remains underground after the miners remove a large body of ore.

    Bud Hurlbut knew what he was doing when he made this. The recent refurb looks great, I'm lucky to have ridden it once since then. In the decades prior to that there were sections of fiberglass mountain falling away and you could see into the next room. It's funny to think Walt Disney liked it so much he borrowed Walter Knott's ride for his own park ( Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland ) and yet it still never held a candle to this one. I'm glad this ride is still around.

During the dark parts I used to climb from cart to cart and confuse the workers when I would be in a completely different cart by the end of the ride lol and to hurry up at the end if no one was looking I would jump off as it ends so I can go run to the front of the line to ride again.
