Calibrate Zero Point After Setting Preload and SAG on BMW S1000RR

If you change preload setting to adjust the static and rider SAG on your BMW S1000RR, you need to re-calibrate the zero point for height of the bike above the rear wheel. These bikes measure how high the rear is so that it can anticipate rear wheel lift and apply ABS (except when in Slick Mode) as the rear wheel loses traction. Incorrect zero point can result in incorrect application of ABS when you don't want it applied.

    I’ve got a 2022 with DDC - you’ve offered the best info I’ve found yet even knowing the model year is quite apart. Similar even if not the same. Incredible that dealer selling bike doesn’t offer basic setup knowing it’s not an easy or clear process. Like nothing else especially manual dial adjusters. The bike on to do the adjustment is likely just the start of it for most. Even to read manual supplied with bike barely skims it and the computer dealer service technician manual isn’t super clear. In fact I read dealer manual like a book page for page 4-5 times before it all started to come clear (along with doing each process where needed). The other major hurdle - all the specialist tools that are unavailable to pubic (along with the actual manual at least easily purchased) Bmw clearly want buyers paying (overcharging) the buyers to work on the machines. The most unfriendly serviceable bike I’ve ever owned. And by far the best machine simultaneously. 😢 Such that working on it until I figured it out was pure anger. Wanted to light it on fire a couple times.

    if we are talking about the same thing, you could make a larger adjustment to all settings and see what changes you notice to how it feels - set it to -5 on the front damping, -5 on rear compression, and +5 on rear rebound. try that first.

    I have just had the suspension set up.Can I calibrate the suspension on the stand or does it have to be straight up and down? Will the compression and rebound settings still be saved or will they be reset after calibration?

  • @TheBikeStig

    yes mate, damping settings won't change, just make sure the bike is not lifted and is simply supporting its own weight when you calibrate, I normally do it on the paddock stands front and rear.

    @@MHBMOHD I just noticed you said DDC settings were at 0 ... Try something like -4 for compression, and +3 for rebound for both front and rear and see how that feels. It should compress fairly quickly but not rebound too fast. As for a wobble, I'd be getting a technician to look at that.

    I had a good look at an S1000R owners manual and can't find any reference to the CALIB function after preload setting. This lift detection is actually installed, on the left side beside the rear shock you can see the linkage connected to the swingarm for lift detection. But I'm fairly confident calibration of it is not an option on the R

    The Bike Stig Ah thanks for clarifying that George. Worried I was missing something. Searched all over the bike menu’s and manual too found nothing. Really curious why it’s different from the RR 🧐

  • @TheBikeStig

    @TheBikeStig

    @@Invis_Space I think its because the race bike simply needs to be more precise and rear wheel lift is a genuine issue. If you are setting your preload properly then rider SAG will be close across all bikes regardless of rider weight. That rear wheel pick up is only an issue when the rear wheel is lifting off the ground which most people won't have problems with. Truth is we are turning off ABS on the track so it's not an issue regardless of calibration.
