Calgary Vet Shows How to Make a Supportive Sling for Pet's Hind Legs

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Dr Schell from Calgary Alberta demonstrates how to make and use a sling to help stabilize and support the hind end mobility of a pet with weakness or post surgery healing. This method provides a comfortable way to enable pets with hind leg and lower back to move and also is beneficial during post operative rehabilitation, and improving mobility and strength. It helps pets to move up and down stairs, ramps, and slippery surfaces. It is comfortable for both pet and pet owner. How precious you are. Thank you so much as I am 66 and we have a German Shepard. They only seem to show how to move little dogs our Shepard is not little. I used two bags to support her front as well as her back. I then rested her over my knee and she finally went potty. At 66, I just don't have the back to move her around. She is 12 and tried to jump a wall that she sailed over when younger and twisted her left leg and back to where she cannot walk. The vet put her on a pain meds this morning but I was panicking as it was hurting my back to more her. You have a piece of my heart tonight.

Thanks for this video all these years later. My husky's hips have been in decline for a while now, and at this point she can't really get her legs under her. It's a temporary fix for a difficult situation, but at least she can go to the bathroom for now with some help.

My 11yr old boxer has been really loosing mobility in her hind legs and hips for months now. I tried using store bought back leg braces and she just couldn't walk with them. I've been at my wits trying to help my best friend. I adopted her at 3 months old, she just turned 11 yrs old last week. She's my everything. I was searching the internet for help when I came up on your video. As soon as I finished watching I made her sling. Getting ready to try it out! Thanks so very much for inspiring video, wanting to help without any gain! You are a God send. I can't thank you enough!!!

What a brilliantly simple solution to a distressing problem.I made the harness in a few minutes. My 18 years old Samoyed cross has been having increasing difficulty going up and down steps to my garden. She fell again today soiling the floor in the laundry. If my Son hadn't been there to lift her I certainly couldn't. I'm 85 with most of the limitations of old age! Thank you so much. Margaret. Australia.

Get yourself the Help Em Up harness I was able to lift my 90 lb GSD by myself even when he became completely paralyzed with Degenerative Myelopathy. I'm using it now for my 94 lb senior rescue GSD with hip dysplasia, too. Nothing supports them like this harness does and saves wear and tear on your own back. I was in need of back surgury myself while helping my DM Dog, so I can attest that it helps to make life easier for you as well. DM is a sliw progressive degenerative disease this works in a pinch but for the long haul, nothing beats the Help Em up. The blue harness is the normal size mist GSD wear. Also join the DM.awareness group on Facebook for more support on coping with the challenges of DM.

I just used this on my 19 year old Pit/Russel he weighs about 28 pounds now and has no use of his rear legs as of this week. It gives him some sense of mobility and saved my bad lower back! Thanks so much for sharing this! The only change I made was to leave a cut out in one side for his penis so he could urinate. He is partially incontinent and sometimes it needs to be manually expressed.👍

Thank you for this video it's very helpful. FYI: I have a 15+ yr old Jack Russell who has recently been having bad rear hip problems due to arthritis/age. It got to the point where he could not get up from a laying position on his own and walking was extremely difficult. I did a LOT of research and have found that a combination of Glucosamine Sulfate, MSM and Chondroitin can be used to alleviate the pain, swelling and actually help to rebuild the cartilage in dogs. I confirmed with my vet that human grade is good (even better, in fact, than vet grade), safe for dogs and is much more inexpensive. My dosage combination, given my dogs weight (20 lbs) is 900mg (1/2 a pill every 12 hours). This is broken down to 500mg of glucosamine and 400 mgs. of chondroitin. Be sure to get the glucosamine that is derived from shellfish NOT vegetables - it is much more effective. It may take up to 4 weeks to see an improvement - but I can swear I saw an immediate improvement! He still needs a little help getting up to the sitting/standing position and his gait is still stiff, but he is moving more quickly and with less "wobbling" or dragging of his leg. I can't wait to see how it progresses over the next few weeks. It's important to note that once they are on it, they need to stay on it for life. Dosage an be reduced dramatically after 8 weeks or so. Again, very effective and much more cost efficient then what you would get at the vet. Last note: it should be taken with food due to mild stomach upset (from anti-inflammatory properties). Side effects are minimal - slight nausea, diarrhea or constipation. I do not endorse any brand in particular - I'm just a dog owner who has found something that appears to help tremendously, with minimal side effects and wanted to share. It is definitely worth doing your own research on. :)

I'm going to try this for my 12 year old male Akita, who has been experiencing arthritis about for about four years, and now is losing the use of his back leg and hips. He needs support to get on his feet to walk, and, for now, does okay once he is up and moving, but has great difficulty rising up off the floor. Thank you for the video. Simple and affordable way to help him, which is is exactly what I was looking for, as it breaks my heart to see him struggling, and in my case, I'm an older person with arthritis, so it is difficult to lift him. This sling will allow me to help him, without hurting myself in the process. Thanks again.

I noticed that you cut the bag sides while leaving the seam intact. I tried removing the sides by undoing the seam. Big Mistake! The seams must stay intact to keep the remaining bag material from unraveling. BTW: there must be some way to add a support strap to go behind the dog's fanny to place the dog's load weight at the hip instead of the belly. Such a strap should be easy to rig with Velcro, eh?

Same has happened to my Corgi. She has now become completely devoid of movement in her hind legs. It took about two years to complete; but I found that feeding her raw, finely ground-up beef ligaments (1/3 cup) during the day helped slow down the progression. (After the first three days of this, she could suddenly go up the stairs; but I continued to carry her to prevent stress on what was left of her joints.) Finally, I found some elastic leotards and tied the feet together. I wrapped the waste up a bit. I put the waist part under her hind quarter, back of her belly, under her hip joints and hold the knotted feet above as support and we can go out for bathroom breaks and walks up and down the alley-ways. She needs her walks and visits to where other dogs are and have been. She sleeps a lot now, is not in pain, has been on a BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet since she turned ten. I use vitamin and mineral supplements. I also add a half tsp Borax spread through the day and she is quite healthy. The borax will actually stop nerve pain, though I have not heard of, nor read about this elsewhere-off topic, but it relieved a tooth infection I had, though it took over two months using it every time the pain came. (google The Borax Conspiracy by Walter Last. It is so safe. You may see dead flukes and wormy things in the stool first time round.) I am retired and can tend to her needs. She is happy and smiles lots; when my Sadie no longer wishes to eat, the time will have come for us to part ways. Namaste and care, mhikl

I just thought of making a similar belt like support out of a towel, going to take out the leather straps out of an old handbag (that are strong) and give them to my seamstress to sow together, hopefully that will keep it from scrunching (wider and a bit tougher smooth surface area), will let you know how it worked...for my 14 y.o. lab, just yesterday her back leg gave out so had to help her move..
