Calf Management Tips: Lidocaine Blocking & Dehorning

Ғылым және технология

Dehorning calves can be a painful process. Blocking the cornual nerve with lidocaine numbs the horn bud area and controls the pain associated with dehorning/disbudding. In this movie, Elizabeth demonstrates how to block the nerve and dehorn a calf using a butane dehorner.

Can you please tell me: in a calf whose mother is horned and whose dad is polled, would you, then, wait to see if there is a horn bud?, And if there is no horn bud at a week old do you think that would mean the calf is polled?

Usually you can tell with in the first few days. But because of the way the polled gene works, it is quite uncommon to get a pulled calf out of only one polled parent.

Taking the horns off, is for a moment of pain, a life time of safety. Cows are brutal with their horns, they can kill a child, woman or man with them, and they don't hesitate to stab and horn other cows. That can be really bad. They can rip udders of other milkers and poke eyes out. This is very nice to the calf.. and done with painkiller.

@ShawnDeitch02 yes there is that too. Most of the good dairy breeds hVe horns though. Black Angus are polled and I milked one before. Her milk was good and she had no horns. My sister has a lot of polled dairy cows, but the holsteins are all horned.

Safer for other cows, and humans alike. I live on a beef farm and we’ve had way too many serious injuries to other cows because of horns. There’s only a slight irritation afterwards and pain is rarely felt
