    Calculation groups - Superuseful feature! TabularEditor by the way saved me when I needed to make Powershell script for refreshing token of office 365 account. It was the only tool (not SSMS) which showed the proper attributes of datasource parameters. Thank you SQLBI guys!

    thanks again for this great content! Calc Groups sound were promising will play with that. which AS compatbility level is needed, 1500? If we now would get in addition also "default members" feature, so we don't need anymore insure that a slicer has always a value set, this would be another nice edition and would and narrow the gap to OLAP cubes even more ;)

  • @marcorusso7472

    @marcorusso7472

    Calculation groups affect existing measures, but don't generate new measures. Tooltips are defined by Power BI measures you apply to the Tooltips property, so they are affected by calculation groups, but you still need to associate measures to tooltips to get the result.

    Calculation groups only work with explicit measures and they disable implicit measures. just create the measures you want in an explicit way (which is also a best practice in any case - otherwise Excel cannot use your model).

  • @marcorusso7472

    @marcorusso7472

    The measures are affected by calculation groups for all the visuals, and this already works. The Power BI Desktop July 2020 version only applies the dynamic format string of a calculation group to Matrix, Table, and Card visual. However, Microsoft should implement the dynamic format strings for other visuals in future versions of Power BI.

    Anyone know why it doesnt work when connecting tabular editor to a dataset in the power bi online service and trying to add a calc group?

  • @SQLBI

    @SQLBI

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you connect Tabular Editor to Power BI online, the dataset must be on premium capacity and you should connect using XMLA endpoint. Make sure you set the "Discourage implicit measure" model property to False and that you have a compatibility level greater than or equal to 1520. These steps are automatic if you save the PBIX file after you enable the preview property "Store datasets using enhanced metadata format".

  • @Sandhyaansoman

  • @marcorusso7472

    @marcorusso7472

    That property is at the Model level and it is automatically set to True as soon as you create a calculation group in Tabular Editor. However, make sure you enable the preview feature “Store datasets using enhanced metadata format” in the Power BI options in order to create calculation groups.

    @@marcorusso7472 Yes that is also enabled. But I tried to migrate the model from A(AS) to Power BI through Tabular editor. Then I tried to create the calculation group in that PBIT file. Is that the one causing this issue?

  • @marcorusso7472

    @marcorusso7472

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Sandhyaansoman You have to upgrade the compatibility level by doing this: - Enable the preview feature “Store datasets using enhanced metadata format” in the Power BI options - Open the PBIX - Save it as a PBIX (now it should have the new format) Now you should be able to open Tabular Editor and create the calculation groups. The compatibility level and the setting you mentioned should be updated automatically this way.

    It seems that when you start to use Tabular Editor and experiment with calculation groups, Power BI will stop to have default option to use the default sum,count,average measure in the model. Explanation: you take one colum from table, add it to your visualization (f.e. Matrix), click on the drop down arrow an have an option to choose Dont Summariye, count, sum, etc... this is not the case when you add calculation group to your data model. It is not a bug, it is by design. Calculation groups disable implicit measures. You can see this described in the documentation, too. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/analysis-services/tabular-models/calculation-groups?view=asallproducts-allversions

    @@jakubkalab1914 You need to change the "Discourage implicit measure" setting in the data model using Tabular Editor. It is set to True when you create a calculation group, but it is not automatically reset to "false" when you remove them.
