Calathea care

The calathea care is one of my most requested video. After following many advice online from Western growers, I killed calathea after calathea. This is because the care is very different in my high humidity climate. The most common way to kill calatheas here is actually rot (from overwatering). I share my tips on how to have them thrive, and also share my top 3 easiest and hardest calathea in my collection. If you have killed these before, please try again using my suggestions and you should see success in growing them. Oh, and this video applies to most plants in the marantacaea family in which calathea is only one out of 31 genuses.

Yes! Finally someone talking about HOW to water calatheas!! One thing I always heard about calathea care when I was starting out were "high humidity" and "keep them moist", but never how to strike that fine balance. It took me a solid year to figure out I was overwatering mine and that's why they were struggling. I didn't think I could overwater calatheas LOL I held back watering and it got so much better. I'd say the right watering (w/ filtered or rain water if possible!) was more critical than giving them higher humidity.

I have several Calathea, Stromanthe and Maranta already in my collection but it's always nice to be reminded about what's working and what's not. Happy to have found a prayer plant care video by someone also from southeast asia! I was having really good luck with my "resurrected 😅" prayer plants since last year, but these past few months, they've all just been drying up significantly! They have less than half their leaves left. I'm thinking it might be the intense heat we're experiencing now, so I moved them so stay underneath some trees. So frustrating though ☹ no new growths yet either. Looking forward to your specific prayer plant videos!😊

Thank you very much for your teaching Sean, brilliant on so many levels! I am gleefully gobsmacked with your detailed levels of thought; attention to every detail and all botanical aspects covered in all of your videos. We are the richer gardeners for all your dedication and education. In this video, the cotton moisture pads demonstration described categorically what these species need to thrive in terms of moisture. I enjoyed the part “guess which was grown inside?which outside bit”? the answer illuminating. I love the vibe if you are not artfully playing and experimenting with your plants, you are doing it wrong. Also your Ikat vibe shirt was a nice surprise detail against your white walls. All but one (except Ornata, a long time ago. I wish I kept the stump as they come back from the dead!) of my plants in this species are thriving in my garden, in a shady spots concealing my worm farms from the sunlight. I give them a handful of worm castings sprinkled over the top (closed loop fertilising here). I plant them in any areas that are less windy to keep the humidity up. I plant along with a homemade forest floor type mix with extra coconut fire and worm castings. As there are gale force winds pretty much everywhere here, a clift top spot. My next experiment is seeing whether my zebrina can grow in a super windy spot by my front gate, where I need rocks and ties, to hold the plants from being blown out of the soil, ugh. I am jealous of your high walls keeping out the wind, and your secret garden beyond.

Thank you so, so much! Have been trying to 'get' Calatheas for quite a while now. The more Ctenanthe types do well with me, the Orbifolia, alas, not at all. The Mosaica and related ones love me! The Rufibarba is a deep love for me, but, yes, verrrry difficult. There is a huge one in the office, thriving on hydroculture. I found one in a coco pot instead of plastic and it is doing well. So I would definitely go for terracotta or any other airy pot + more airy mix + frequent watering. I live in Europe, so temperate climate with average humidity.

Somehow I see a lot of Europeans grow calatheas more successfully than here i. Tropical asia 😅 I believe its your determination and longer experience with this plant family.

@@onlyplants thank you! But you are being far too modest, Sean. Your plants are stunning and your video was very instructional. Once again I learned a lot. It is so nice you explain your thinking proces to us!

I love calatheas and I really had to get to know and understand them and their needs, once I got the hang of it, ( after killing a few, and some resurrections) now these fussy divas live well with me, thank God, finally !!😁😁

Wow thank you for this video! Finally, a video where someone explains everything about calatheas. One of my first plants when getting my own place was a white fusion. After finding out it was a drama queen, I began to see it start dying in my care 🥲 It eventually died off and then began to regrow and is now looking nice but has lost its variegation. Still love calatheas though and will continue to learn and get more 😊❤️

@@onlyplants Just checked out the video, and wow! Totally different from what people at plant stores have been telling me (“Just give it more light and time”). Guess I’ll have to wait until the plant is a little more mature and bigger before I start propagating it then :) Thank you so much!

This video is really helpful. I saw a lot of sites that recommend to mist the plant often to increase the humidity but i didn't know that it will creates a place for fungus and bacteria. I feel so bad treating my calatheas the wrong way. Thank you Sean. My calatheas will be treated they way they should from now on.

So beautiful. Even living in Malaysia with high humidity I have killed all except for 1 Orbifolia . So tempted to get more especially White fusion . Tried it 3 times but sadly none survived. Spidermites and over watering killed them. Will stay away for time being till I'm confident. Great video with many useful tips. Thank you.

I just want to know what type of lighting they prefer, as their leaves tends to curl up. Thanks is advance for any tips! 😊

They like low light in my experience. Most of the time they result in brighter foliage. But keep in mind our definition of low light may be different. 😀

I have a rattlesnake plant. I loved how it looked and didn't read how to tale care of it until after I had it. I ended up cutting it completely down except for a couple and it is now growing back, like 4 right now. I have it in a darker area and doing better. We shall see. 🙂
