Speaking as someone currently in school for animation, everything Lily said about innovation in animation being a result of making the process easier is 100% true. My professors are always talking about finding ways to cut corners and making things easier on yourself (also, they always note the importance of having a rich media diet, so you don't just make the same thing over and over again. The thing is, for me, the writing is the most important thing in anything, anime-inspired or not. I love anime, but I am in the point of my life where the anime actually need to have a good story to care about it. Like, one of my favourite storytelling driven shows is Young Justice, because it is actually balances perfectly serious and less serious storytelling to tell pretty great stories that are both fun but always have pretty good logic behind them. But I also love a lot of the comedy shows that I saw as a child, like Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken or Powerpuff Girls. And that the industry went mostly for that path is not wrong. The thing is that if I want serious stories I will just read manga or watch an anime and there is an audience to that. Squid Game literally just an anime in live action. But asking eveything to be like that is... sad. Like, fun things are okey. But if you want to see what I think is a good anime that actually tells its story in a great way, watch March Comes Like a Lion.

As someone else mentioned, out of all the “Cal-Art culprits”, Gumball is the most ironic one, seeing as one of the points of the show is to show how many unique and different styles of character design exist. Live action, different pencil types, modern and classic 3D, pixel, rough and smooth, and so so SO much more. Quickly going back to gumball himself, although it’s just something I thought of, I believe the reason he and the rest of his family is designed like that is because they are supposed to represent the current modern animation type, compared to all of the other characters. (And yes I know the Cal-Arts images where made by people googling western cartoons.)

The thing with anime is that each decades decline in animation quality had a reason. In the 80s, the industry went more to tv and less to OVA and OVAs had more time and budget than tv shows. The 90s had to deal with a huge economic crash that crippled the industry and made changes that are still negative to the studios themselves today. 2000s was the time when Cel animation went away and made way for digital animation. But many didn't master it and it took over a decade for shows to become well animated at times. And now I can see the clear improvements in animation since the 2000s. One Piece only started to look good in recent years. Before that, it was just not even close to it. In fact, quality wise, it was extremely far away in comparison to the manga. But now it is close to the manga and sometimes even outperformed the manga. That, however, still doesn't cover the many stinkers.

Re:Zero comes to mind where I could totally see that happening. Like, the whole point of its protagonist is that he's an incel and gets the shit regularly beaten out of him for being an incel until he learns to not be an incel (at least in season 1, not sure where season 2 was heading, I kinda tapped out halfway through and probably need to rewatch most of it to understand what's happening on a basic level). But, like, a huge point of season 1 was that Subaru was into Amelia and Amelia was not into him and the show repeatedly condemns him for fixating on earning Amelia's love and for acting like someone who thinks their the protagonist of their own personal anime. I would not be surprised to see this fly over people's head. Like, there were some lore bits about a dragon putting the world together or something? Don't remember. I'd bet money that there are quite a few people speculating on that rather than engaging with the show's themes about self respect. Tho I don't really engage in anime fandoms, even for shows I really liked, outside of the 2003 adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist. And I think that one's mostly habitable because the particular flavor of mindless weebs have long since jumped ship to Brotherhood because it more closely follows the plotline and characterization of the manga while having higher budget animation. Even when 03 is the far both bloodier and darker than Brotherhood and has a more comic-book looking art style. From what I've seen, most of the complaints are people fixating on the fact that none of the characters from the fascist military are depicted as heroic figures and that certain characters from BH aren't present in 03. I swear most of the complaints hurled at 03 from BH stans are shit like "Mustang isn't as likeable" when, like, the whole point of Mustang in 03 is that he's objectively irredeemable while still being sympathetic. Tho I think the actual reason why BH stans get so derisive of 03 is that 03 is a genuinely deep morally grey show with heavy themes and a lot to say about those themes, which makes people uncomfortable, while BH is more about mass appeal and alluding to themes without asking the audience to actually think about those themes, which makes the show sound smart because you can say "BH talks about genocide" without having to really address the same level of discomfort that "03 says not doing anything about genocide makes you among the people responsible for it" comes with. Especially when, with that theme in particular, BH depicts its genocide much more sanitarily than 03 does. There's definitely other anime fandoms that are probably fine. I don't really engage with the Pokemon anime's fanbase because I'm not really interested in hearing people complain about parts of the anime that I think are very good but also not significant enough to bitch about to the extent that people do. Stuff like Sun & Moon's change in both art style and tone from XY or Goh being the best character (because I vibe with him, all other characters can objectively fuck off). Like, SM and Journeys both do away with anime's typical formula of Ash being a beginner trainer and learning. In SM, he's on vacation, in Journey's he's doing research. Which are both really good formats for the anime and helped make them feel distinct from each other. Overall grade, weebs are allergic to good media as they will bash shows for their best qualities and praise shows for inconsequential shit. Probably nothing new, but I felt like talking about those specific anime because I like them :)

As someone who tends to hyper fixate on things that I really like, these videos have really given me a lot to think about in terms of how I consume different media content and how I choose to respond to them. I remember when TTG first premiered its trailer at a convention panel I went to many years ago (I think I was about 17 at the time) and I was actually excited, not because I thought I was getting more of the show that I enjoyed growing up but because it looked really funny. I instantly knew based on the art style that it was gonna be it’s own thing and while I still miss the original, I was content with the run that it had. And when the show finally aired and I watched a few episodes, I realized that it wasn’t my type of humor and I just went on with my life. Because I had other things that I liked to watch waiting for me and I wasn’t filled with so much insecurity and bitterness that I had to let anyone in my vicinity know how upset I was that a modern cartoon was not catering to me specifically. 2011 Thundercats was visually appealing and that was it. I watched the entire run of that show and could only remember maybe a handful of the stories it told. I actually really liked the more goofy character designs of Thundercats Roar because the concept itself is very goofy. Cartoons are supposed to be fun, and this one had a lot of personality that wasn’t just more lore and edge. One thing that I always thought was funny about the complaints of Cal-arts was that the most common argument was that a lot of the main character designs had the same very basic facial structure, ignoring the fact that the character design extends to just one or two characters in each show. Anyone who so much as look up the rest of the character cast can see that there is more variety beyond their “bean mouth” and chubby cheeks. Their “argument” is that flimsy and any person who claims they have a valid point deserves to get shaken up in a Pringles can.

Ok, first of all, great video, Lily, really found it to be something of an educational experience (I mean, I already knew that the term “Cal-Arts Style” was originally a term used to riff on the Iron Giant, but what I didn’t know was everything else you described here, quite eloquently I might add). So, I really must thank you for enlightening me with such info like this. Secondly (on a completely unrelated note), I just wanted to say that you have been quite an influence on a friend’s writing as of late (and by extension, mine), though I’m sure you get told that a lot. But all in all, I definitely do think that it bears repeating here since I imagine not a lot of people give you a lot of credit where such credit is due (or want to, particularly out of a selfish pride that they themselves want to admit to themselves). Thirdly (and this is back on the topic of this video), it really says something about some of my favorite shows as of late, since as much as people want the next Avatar, I just simply want another one of my all-time favorite cartoons, such as Ben 10: Omniverse and Kaijudo (which is a reboot of an anime based on a trading card game, and no, I’m not talking about Yu-Gi-Oh! or whatever card game anime Bushiroad has made in recent years), but if they were part of a much bigger interconnected universe, much akin to what Marvel and DC are doing right now (tho ironically enough, considering that with Ben 10, we did end up getting a taste of that with Generator Rex’s crossover and The Secret Saturdays’s crossover respectively). That said, I mostly say that because I’m currently working on my own series that took a lot of inspiration from these cartoons I’ve come to know as my all-time favorites (among other things).

Yeah, Ghibli films make you feel warm and want to start a family, while shows like S Universe and the like make you want to set your TV on fire. This isn't an uncommon criticism. If the show isn't worth watching, it wasn't worth creating it in the nature we saw it. Many things seem pushed to platforms much higher than they should have ever been on. If S Universe was such an amazing story, it would hold up with sloppy animation, which as you said, it doesn't. Things evolve, and the art style isn't the problem, it's everything surrounding it and associated with the art style. Miyazaki also misses a lot, it's just nice to watch something that like really resonates with you, even if it's perhaps SOLELY the animation. You hit the nail on the head with your argument, and we would probably all tolerate the bean-smile if it wasn't so smug in the face of criticism that it blindly ignored.

I have a friend who was complaining about teen titans go recently but when I asked her when was the last time she actually watched the original she had a pretty hard time answering that question. I feel like a lot of people have this strong unwillingness to interrogate their own kneejerk nostalgia-based reactions, so that they don't have to confront the flaws of what they grew up with in fear of losing those happy memories. How often do you think any of these people actually revisit older stuff they liked as a kid on their own? I love halo combat evolved and regularly replay it to this day but nostalgia can only ever wallpaper cracks and gaps that are apparent to everyone else, expecially in a time where so many other videogames has never been more accessible. Looking to the future can be scary and yes sometimes the old thing is, in fact, better. But the things we remember will always override the deluge of garbage that came along with it.

The thing you’ll notice when people complain about modern media being the same is that they never look at the industry as a whole. If your mad at that the current lineup of animated shows are all comedies, you’re an idiot because you’ve restricted your searches to one specific category. If you want to watch a drama, then watch a drama instead of trying to mould what’s supposed to be a comedy into a drama. This isn’t even a problem with animation, this is a problem with modern criticism. If you’re going to criticise a comedy for example. Talk about how it’s a bad comedy rather than a product in general. If the film, show or game fails at it’s genre. Then it fails at being a good product all together. You can say a show like TTG fails at being a comedy for kids, that’s fine. But if you’re going to say that it fails at replicating the dramatic tension that wasn’t even in the original, then that’s the kind of criticism that’s going to be considered bullshit, no matter how many ‘this is just my opinions’ you put in-front of your arguments. Judge a product based off it genre and not off what you personally think people have to watch.

Why don't you just stick to your own toxic weeb fandom? These cartoons are made for children. Why why why, do you want them to be violent adventure fantasy with high stakes? Because then it will be 'mainstream'? Why can't people be content with what they have? What makes this so funny to me is that you have endless pits of meaningless mindnumbing adult fantasy mush to consume, yet you don't, and are instead watching cartoons, that supposedly don't appeal to you. Like... there's clearly a reason you are asking for this, which is that the content you currently have supplying it is subpar. It's like.. "I have endless content that appeals to me, yet I choose to ignore it to focus on these kids cartoons, because I cannot live with the reality that I am projecting and that maybe the genre I want so much kind of sucks, and that is why I am ignoring it to push it onto mainstream children's media! Hoorah, I am a smart and well put together adult!!"

The hilarious thing about the hardcore anime fans of all people complaining about the "Cal-arts style" is that 99% of anime plots these days are just horny Mad Libs. The Simpsons were one of the first to do this fully, but aspects have been used for humans and animal characters since animation began. Snow White has this with the Dwarfs. I don't like anime at all but I've still always made characters like this because it's just easier.

I'm going to be honest and say that I disagree with some of the later parts about serious animated shows... the Thundercats show was honestly a good time and while it didnt sell toys which was why it failed that doesnt detract from the fact that it was good and could've done more. That also however doesn't devalue Roar since it is a kids show and it should then be treated as such... I also agree with the fact that similar styles isn't a bad thing and honestly I have no problem with simplistic styles because it enables the creators more time and space to focus on other things. In the end though the point is that you shouldn't complain about change for the sake of change or about how media doesnt connect with you when it isn't meant to, but that also doesn't mean that animation that is aimed at an older demographic can be separated off into crass Family Guy ripoffs and eDgY manga/anime because that's incredibly reductive.

Doesn't mean they can't enjoy trash, but to assume modern day cartoons are bad simply because it doesn't look the way they want it and/or because they are no longer the target demo is childish. I'm all about viewing things with a critical eye even when you enjoy them, but the amount of adults claiming they don't like the art style in current children shows is ridiculous. Who cares? Another thing about a lot of shows is cramming people into things they don't know how to do. Animators don't always make the best writers. Animators also have a nightmare workload, and having someone to do colours or backgrounds is lifesaving. Like if I was expected to animate all of a sudden, everything would go down hill. I can write, and voice act with good range. Sure, I can do some mockup storyboards to show the storyboard artists what I generally want, but make me actually animate the dang thing, and I will slowly breakdown. Also keep in mind that some networks are trying to fight with you every step of the way, and they are just there to make money, while everyone else is trying their best to make art come to life. Here is a prayer that the animation industry goes through a massive revival in creative freedom now that everyone is sick of reboots. Love y'all.

This reminds me of Pokemon game animation whining, because Pokemon is also a gigantic toy commercial but so many people arent ready to accept that. So it continued with whining about trees and reused animation, and I'm pretty sure Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will get the same treatment with the same complaints.

I will say part of that was backlash to dexit and how the devs claimed dexit had to happen to benefit the animation. There is definitely a degree of adults mad that a kids series isn't making them the new target demographic though.

You'll never see a more rabid group of people than 30 year old, concerningly nostalgic, og trilogy Star Wars fans who foam from the mouth at teenage girls getting psychologically tormented in a ""baby"" show.

While I found several of the things you said hard to hear I can't help but agree. I've found that I've grown pickier with what tv shows, movies, and video games that I like as I've grown up, because I found that too many are concerned with being mature and not about being good. Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin (yes that's the real mouthful of a title it has) doesn't even feel like a Final Fantasy game, let alone the original Final Fantasy, a fun D&D-esq game, that it's based on. It's too concerned with having generic edgy 2000s male white protag full of single-minded rage that's SO COOL and BETTER than the original Warrior of Light (that you get to stab to death in the DLC) than it is with having a good story or characters (both are of those things are non-existent). And it takes me a while to give some other shows like Cyberpunk Edgerunners (genuinely great, btw) a try because of all the praise it was getting from the anime community, half the time whatever the anime community likes I find fairly generic and uninteresting, finding more enjoying with older anime that either have something interesting to say or are just trying to have fun. I feel like I'm constantly experiencing FOMO with media these thanks to the constant deluge of social media (even though I'm not on social media that much). I'm having to constantly sift through either stuff that ranges from "okay" to "garbage" (like Kill la Kill, god help me...) to find anything good. And that good stuff is usually things that I initially get pushed away from thanks to a bunch of previously poor experiences with other media and the fanbases that like it.

I tried watching both teen titans go and thunder cats roar. I disliked them both immensely and I genuinely prefer their anime inspired predecessors. But I can tell that is not want American animation is currently doing and I’m fine with that. I just don’t watch new American animation and that is that.

@@artwtsketchyt2407 Yeah I remember the first half of season 1 having colors that were often way too saturated. I think around the second half of season 1 is where the colors became a lot less bright and more easy on the eyes. Even when they changed the colors to be more saturated in season 3, it was still pleasing to look at.

@@artwtsketchyt2407 I feel like the reason I didn't really notice it when watching the episodes was because despite some episodes feeling kinda generic during the first half of season 1 (which was definitely the crew still trying to find its footing), there were still a lot of good episodes carried by the writing with the comedy and characters.
