Calabria Foti "In the Still of the Night" CD EPK

Музыка

A moody and intimate collection of songs by Cole Porter, sung by the incomparable Calabria Foti, with a superb "chamber band" featuring clarinet virtuoso Eddie Daniels, legendary guitarist, Gene Bertoncini, Richard Locker, cello, Bob McChesney, trombone, Ike Sturm, bass, and Jared Schonig, drums. Produced by pianist and arranger Michael Patterson, “In the Still of the Night” is a peek into the soul of Cole, at his most poignant, heartfelt and vulnerable.

CALABRIA FOTI - Every Time We Say Goodbye It's 1:38 a.m. Frozen Prairie Time and channel 71 is playing (just for me) my favorite living singer CALABRIA FOTi -- from her recent all- Cole Porter album -- Every Time We Say Goodbye. Gene Bertoncini on guitar. So lovely. Just today I'd been telling my oldest Grandson Thomas about why Calabria has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Is it at KZread? Nope. I renew my standing threat to pay for your copy of a Calabria Foti album if you don't love her. p.s. Gene Bertoncini (born 1937) was part of the staff orchestras on shows featuring Merv Griffin and Jack Paar, and most famously The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. After hearing a Julian Bream record at the advice of Chuck Wayne, Bertoncini began studying classical guitar and brought the instrument into playing jazz.[4] For some eighteen years, Bertoncini played Sunday and Monday evenings at the Bistro La Madeleine on West 43rd Street in New York City. Bertoncini has been on the faculties of Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, New York University and the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada. Currently Bertoncini is on the faculty of William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. He is also on the staff of the Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camps. p.p.s. Grandson Thomas, a brilliant musician and computer wiz is moving to beautiful Banff Alberta and had dropped by to spend the day with his Grandpa. He brought along the Guild electric guitar I'd acquired when I was 17, and recently paid 15-hundred dollars to make 'better than new.' Thomas thought I'd like to play it one more time before his departure. To Banff. This day. As Mom would say, What a coincidence!

CALABRIA FOTI -- I Concentrate On You Nancy for Frank -- her weekly three hour program on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio -- just ended and, just for me, they're playing my favorite living singer, with my favorite version of Cole Porter's I CONCENTRATE ON YOU. Her trombone virtuoso husband, Bob McChesney is playing the most wonderful solo musical bridge. I despair of ever finding this at KZread (none of her songs are there). But I singled this one out in my Amazon review for her recent all-Cole-Porter album, IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT. "On a personal note I spotted a unique musical allusion (to a song Cole Porter didn't write). It's heard twice - on the opening and the bridge of Calabria's EV'RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE. One of NYC's “most sought-after cellists” Richard Locker alludes to a song Keely Smith introduced in 1957 - “I Wish You Love.” In the first 30 seconds, we hear the distinguished cellist playing verbatim the notes of that song's seldom-heard opening verse (Natalie Cole was the first important artist since Sinatra to include that minor-key, opening verse). From memory imperfect, that song's opening words (from a forgotten American lyricist set to a melody by an even more obscure French composer): "Goodbye . . . no use leading with our chins. This is where our story ends: Never lovers, ever friends Again, as he solos on the musical bridge to Porter's “Ev'ry Time” cellist Locker repeats, verbatim those same notes from the opening verse of “I Wish You Love.” (Wonder if the musicians present spotted that? Perhaps the accomplished composer/arranger behind this album, Michael Patterson even suggested it?) There's a snippet of it in this promo/video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/immHo9GtZdnWhdI.html Celebrated this evening at SinatraFamily.com -- "Forums" -- "Siriusly Sinatra" -- MY FAVORITE VERSION -- YOURS TOO? sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/50225-My-Favorite-Version-%28yours-too-%29?p=1273155#post1273155

I second that emotion. Among the great living jazz singers Calabria is far-and-away my favorite. As someone here said, her voice is "luscious."

Note perfect! That's how I would describe “IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT” - the latest gem from Calabria Foti. Start with that arresting cover photo: Like an oil painting by a 17th century master (think Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring') the beautifully textured photo evokes a classic beauty of someone whose singing voice would, I believe, have been appreciated by mutual heroes -- Sinatra and Peggy Lee. I feel certain that Sinatra (who once contributed liner notes praising his friend Dionne Warwick for a similar, all- Cole Porter album) certain that Sinatra would have loved Calabria's gorgeous voice and incomparable way with a Cole Porter song. In fact, like Sinatra, Calabria has an 'artless' delivery: her flawless tone is so natural, so easy, yet so varied! No wonder fellow musicians are her greatest fans - including her trombonist virtuoso husband Bob McChesney. [Just as an aside, Bob's articulation on the slide trombone is astonishing: He is able to play virtuoso classical compositions as fast as any trumpet player. Think about that - and check him out on-line.] Bob McChesney's trombone solos are among the most beautiful - beautiful tone and tasteful content - of any jazz soloist I have ever heard. See if you don't agree! Like most of us, Johnny Mathis discovered Calabria's singing thanks to her 2007 album, “A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening” with its rave reviews from musicians including two of today's greatest composer/arrangers - Johnny (Shadow of Your Smile) Mandel - considered the 'dean' of living arrangers (he turns 92 this year and is still performing professionally) along with Mandel's Argentine-born protege, Jorge Callandrelli. First Johnny Mathis: “One of the greatest pleasures in life is listening to a beautiful voice and Calabria's [provides] some of the most beautiful and artistic music that I have ever heard. Her heart and mind are on display in every well-chosen song. It is a treasure. What a joy!” Johnny Mandel said, “Incredible! One of the best records I have ever heard. Calabria is truly a marvelous singer - in every way. She has all the technique and musicality you could want, and has the ability to tell a story and touch your heart.” Multiple Grammy-winning composer/arranger Callendrelli (who recently celebrated his 30 year working relationship with the ageless Tony Bennett on their 13th album -- Tony & Lady Gaga) said in amazement: “When I first heard Calabria, I felt I had discovered a hidden treasure!” Yes, the operative word there is “hidden.” As a friend said recently: “It's a crime that Calabria still isn't a household name!” Let's hope this latest album helps change that! Years before this “all Cole Porter” album, Calabria told friends and fans: “It's so easy for me to become lost in the emotions of a Cole Porter song. One of my favorite composers, his tunes are great, his lyrics so sensual.” ---- On her last album, “Lovely Way to Spend an Evening” Calabria was surrounded by top West Coast musicians - and a 27-piece string section. For this one, the instrumentation is more spare. Yet the effect remains lush and lovely, thanks to superb NYC engineering, and some of the greatest East Coast musicians - among them, guitar giant Gene Bertoncini (who turns 80 this year) and Eddie Daniels (now 75) - arguably the greatest living clarinetist. Daniels' own exquisite tone lends some gravitas to his personal appreciation of Calabria's incomparable delivery: “Her voice just 'flows' - like water!” On a personal note I spotted a unique musical allusion (to a song Cole Porter didn't write). From memory imperfect, that song's opening words (from a forgotten American lyricist set to a melody by an even more obscure French composer): Goodbye . . . no use leading with our chins. This is where our story ends: Never lovers, ever friends Again, as he solos on the musical bridge to Porter's “Ev'ry Time” cellist Locker repeats, verbatim those same notes from the opening verse of “I Wish You Love.” (Wonder if the musicians present spotted that? Perhaps the accomplished composer/arranger behind this album, Michael Patterson even suggested it?) --- (My copy of this gem arrived by mail - inscribed by Calabria with gold ink!) Like Sinatra and Peggy Lee (and very few other singers) hers is a voice I never tire of hearing. Hence three listenings so far this day to savor the little differences and details unique to each track. I treasure my copy of Calabria Foti's previous CD “Lovely Way to Spend an Evening” (a masterwork that remains my favorite album by any vocalist since Sinatra). The Lady's inscription in silver ink, with a little heart sign, reads: “Hi Mark! To my biggest fan from the world's coldest city! God bless - Calabria.” Mark Blackburn Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

@@soundslikefrank IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT (second favorite version) It's nearing midnight and time for bed and I was hoping that maybe I would hear Siriusly Sinatra play something by "my favorite living singer" and . . . answer to a prayer! Right this minute, it is Calabria Foti's gorgeous, ultra-slow rendition of IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT. At a fast clip, Sinatra owns this one of course. But I bet he would have loved to hear Calabria's 'rubato' take -- from her album of all- Cole Porter songs: It takes my breath away. It's not to be found at Spotify; a snippet can be heard at KZread, near the close of a promotional video, featuring words of praise from clarinet genius Eddie Daniels, plus a few informed words from her trombone virtuoso hubby, Bob McChesney. If you are in a hurry, slide it over to around 2:41 as Calabria introduces that little taste of what channel 71 just played -- IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT. Time for bed. Thanks, George.
