Cal Tjader "Puttin It Together" Vinyl LP

Cal Tjader "Puttin It Together" is a live album recorded January 1973 which has not been re-released yet on CD and has long been unavailable.
The video actually starts off with a track from the "Here" live album recorded in 1977. When "Here" was re-released on CD, my favorite track "Gary's Theme" was left off the re-issue. So it is copied here from the long out-of-print vinyl LP as the first track, followed by the 5 tracks which make up the "Puttin' It Together" album.
I just discovered that the guitarist on this (and other Cal Tjader albums) passed away in Jan of this year (2015). Sad-I really love his playing and my reason for transferring my vinyl was largely to hear him.

I don't believe I've heard this version before. Very familiar with the one included on Last Bolero In Berkeley and another slightly different one that was released as a single. Other than Cal the only musician that I know of who performed the tune was Bill Evans. Nice Gary McFarland tune that was a repeating motif in his America The Beautiful album.

It's a lot of work, copying and breaking up the files into individual tracks, so I decided to post it simply because it's been out of print for so long and never available on CD. It's not actually I think one of Tjader's best albums, but he has made so many over the years, and even this one has some really nice moments. Plus I really like the guitarist here, and he made only a few recordings in the mid-1970's, all as part of Cal Tjader's band. I've not been able to find any other music recorded with this guitarist, Bob Redfield. Thanks for watching-hope you're having a great week my friend!

Compare "Gary's Theme" with how others had already done it - Bill Evans is the artist most associated with this number. Tjader and company turn it into a completely new work! That slow, loping groove is hypnotic!

Agreed-it's quite different here than we're used to hearing it, but you can't beat that groove. Incredible that they didn't put the track on one of the other CD reissues of Tjader's discs from the period where had leftover time, like the 'Amazonas' album for instance.

@@cosmicpickle6562 One of the reasons I was looking for this, is that I'm fascinated with Clare Fischer's keyboard playing, his ability to throw complex ideas into "comping" on sheer instinct, was equal to anyone or possibly even unmatched, but Fischer isn't as well known as he should be.

I knew “Pensativa” for 20 years, and then found “Morning” for the first time about five years ago, and KZread embeds led me on to the “Salsa Picante” album, and the “Machaca” album and since then I have gradually been finding everything I can, using Wikipedia as a guide. The Clare Fischer website is still running, Clare’s widow Donna and his son Brent run it. They can supply a lot. Brent is a Grammy-winner himself. My top recommendations for you would be, “Machaca” (1981), “Tjaderama” (1987), “Crazy Bird” (1992), and “Manteca” (1965). These are small-combo Latin jazz albums. “Ritmo” (2012, Grammy winner) might be the best big-band Latin album ever, with familiar Fischer classics finally recorded thanks to Brent, in Clare’s previously unperformed arrangements for this format. There are also several vocal-harmony Latin Jazz albums that surpass anything Manhattan Transfer or anyone else ever did. You obviously know Tjader’s “Here and There” - Clare does great work on “Huracan” and “Sona Libre” as well. Then there are de-facto Fischer albums under Poncho Sanchez’ name: “Straight Ahead” and “Gaviota”. Art Pepper, “Tokyo Debut” is a fascinating jazz-history accident where Pepper ended up performing with CF, Cal, Pete Riso, Poncho, Rob Fisher, and Bob Redfield. I like the result better than Pepper with his usual collaborators! If your interests extend beyond Latin jazz, Clare did almost everything. Plenty of non-Latin Big Band compositions and arrangements; vocal harmony arrangements; piano and combo jazz, and orchestral arrangements. You might be aware of “Cal Tjader Plays West Side Story”; the superb string-combo arrangements there are Clare’s. Robert Palmer was enlightened enough to hire Clare for several tracks of his “Ridin’ High” jazz album, and the resulting arrangements top anything anyone else ever did with the same “standards”. Maybe the reason he is not better known is that he didn’t have as simple and clear a career path as, say, Bill Evans or Chick Corea; and yet he could sound like either of them, and “arrange” like Gil Evans too!

@@ThePhilBest Thanks so much for the detailed info, i've taken notes here! I already have picked up the Art Pepper 'Tokyo' album a couple of years ago simply because it was Cal's band with Clare and his guitarist (another obscure musician who's playing I love). I think perhaps Clare didn't really attempt to establish a solo career as much for himself maybe. I agree that Cal's band backing Pepper to me is a stronger band than Art tended to use at around the time the 'Tokyo' album was recorded.

Hey Cosmic Pickle, great effort, thanks so much. Just played it through 3 times on the bounce, so as to fully soak up Cal's & his players live energy capturing the spirit /vibe of that golden era. IMHO Cal's sound is so suited to the vibe of 1973, his warm funky sounds are never gimmicky just accessible sophisticated musicianship without any pretentiousness. So many other artists of that style of jazz end up trading substance to reach that level of accessibility, I'm thinking for example Herbie Mann, etc. I love all his music, from the early 50s onwards but between 1968-73 I think is when 'his concept' is fully realized artistically. Do you see it that way too? Is it just me or does he more than any other artist capture the Californian/Palm Springs Mid-Century Modern 'good life' at its peak? It's like I can feel the nuance of dry warm sun and palm trees in every note he plays. His sounds are so familiar to the soul, and yet remain ever fresh; why this hasn't been reissued is just criminal. Thanks again for posting it, absolutely a treat.

So glad you enjoy it as well Nigel. 3 times through? I am impressed! Oh I totally agree with you. Cal was aware of modern changes in jazz and being more accessible, but he managed not to go over the top here and ruin what was special about his playing, music, and bands. There's so many jazz artists, beyond the ones you name, who basically ruined their unique characteristics going for more commercial gains. And yes, Cal does have a California vibe to him I always thought. Maybe that's because I always knew where he lived, etc. but for me, I feel it all the same. However it works as a listener no matter where you live certainly. Beyond this there's a ton (i'm finding out) of even earlier Cal LP's that either never made it onto CD or were briefly available on CD and are now long out of print and near impossible to find. He did record a ton over they years but all the same, how nice it would be to have all of his stuff easily available... Thanks for leaving a comment Nigel!

    8 жыл бұрын

+turntabillist Hey buddy-Well they left it off because of the time limit of CD's and there's another full studio album on the disc. Bad mistake though for leaving off the very best track from the original LP. I think they left it off simply because it was the last track. Don't think they even bothered to listen to the actual albums! Instead they left on a solo piano rendition (which Tjader doesn't even play on) of a soft-rock song from the band Bread. Now THAT track is the one to leave off if you're going to leave something off. Better yet, they could have combined "Puttin' It Together" (also a live album) with "Here" and fit both albums on a single CD (total time 79:50), and just issued the studio album (which is just a bit over 40 minutes) on it's own. I mean they issued other single albums in the 40-minute range as stand-alone CD's without adding bonus tracks or attempting to squeeze 2 albums on one CD. Don't know what they were thinking, really!!!! So glad I held onto my original vinyl copy of "Here"!!! But thanks for watching buddy!

This is the complete vinyl album of 'Puttin It Together' (which I still own) plus the one track from 'Here'. Cal made many live albums, so you may be thinking of another album perhaps...

@@cosmicpickle6562 You are probably correct. Thank you. But I still associate that album cover with that track? Was a dark dancehall!

@@dongorgon4168 Oh that could be-the actual cover for 'Puttin It Together' is at the 30 minute point in the video. That yellow-tinged photo is just from some other source I dont' recall and could have actually been the cover from another album of Cal's-which could have been an album that contains the track you're referencing.
