Robert Peter Banck know what you mean man. I can listen Cal Tjader all day and night. That is why the T in his name is silent. He is like a thief in the day, through the night.

I was to young to physically and musically hang with these guys, but in high school I would take my fake ID and go to hear and absorb their powerful VIBE.,,,sss, and fortunately later to play piano in Willie's band.🎹🎶

I love how he transitioned from the classic xylophone excerpt to the melody of Summertime.

Excellent and extraordinary. I loved their Latin Jazz LP's. They introduced me to Jazz from my Latin side. I was so impacted by their music that it inspired me to take Latin percussion as hobby and today, 50years latter I Still have not heard anything comparable. LP'S Latino, Latin Concert, Cal Tjader plays Latin.

nothing can ever be created again. i get your point, the greatness, the uniqueness, but i had to respond to the cliche. Your peanut butter sandwich from yesterday can't be recreated again.

Got to admit V.G. on piano here is about my favorite Live jazz piano solo, besides much of Thelonious Monk's work, my all time favorite pianist. Mostly due in part to his mainstream success, Vince Guaraldi was my first introduction as a child into Jazz music. When I was young he died, but as a child I did not understand anything except that I loved the music from the cartoons. Apologies for the VG Focus...all in the Set did excellent here & Cal is a musical genius :) Looking to buy the entire concert....Cal Tjader: Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival

Vince Guaraldi may not be a household name, but what a unique place he holds in American popular culture! Three generations of us probably had our first encounter with jazz from his fingertips. His appearance with Cal here at Monterey '58 is legendary in jazz circles. I highly recommend Derrick Bang's recently published ( and definitive) biography, "Vince Guaraldi At The Piano". It evokes not just the man, but the golden days of West Coast jazz scene in which he thrived.

Samba C "Charlie Brown" is the household name. I think you'll find that most people know the music, but, but only jazz afficianados, could name the musician behind it.

10:31 Guaraldi tries to force the band to switch the feel to a backbeat, and nearly invents fusion 10 years before Miles and years before Herbie and "the In Crowd". . The band resists and the experiment goes into deep freeze for a while........to be continued

That was my guess too , on who the unidentified drummer in the pic actually was . Dick Berk , one of the busiest L A based drummers , "back in the day" . Am grateful to have seen several of these greats live : Cal , Willie , even Buddy DeFranco .
