Cal Fire crews are put to the test in preparation for fire season

Cal Fire crews went through annual certification exercises on Wednesday to make sure they are ready as California approaches peak fire season. Six crews were put to the test at Reader Ranch near North San Juan in Nevada County, aiming to get the highest level of certification as part of a Cal Fire Type I hand crew. "The core function of a hand crew in fire suppression is that line construction element, hiking into very remote and rugged areas, constructing hand line in order to suppress wildland fires," said Brian Estes, Cal Fire chief for the Nevada Yuba Placer Unit.
