its an arpeggiating function built into the keyboard that sequences the notes being held down, those nobs ontop of the keyboard determine the tempo, number of octaves etc

Very true, and that's why I do enjoy the linguistic qualities of the Beastie Boys as a rap band. As with CAKE, Beck and the Barenaked Ladies's rap songs.

I simply don't think CAKE is anything close to rap. Love this song, and as always with CAKE this is a pretty accurate rendition.

Mainstream "rap" is generally not a band full of talented, but sarcastic musicians; it's generally a producer with some sort of sequencer that you can plug any old "artist" over top of indiscriminately. The level of interplay is different, and the levels of listening are different.

My comment is really old, so it's a bit outdated with my opinion of now, but The Distance is still rap. It has to do with musical sound; comparing it to fall out boy headbanging is completely irrelevant in terms of music as that has to do with someone's stage presence. If John was smackin' booty and wavin motionin' wit' his pimp hand, I wouldn't call it rap.

Not sure I like the vibraslap in this song. But this isn't one of my favorite songs anyway.

This song is just amazing live. Reading the conversation below, I've got to agree with everything there. The music industry sucks, that's one reason I support indie music so much, like my favorite band Interpol. Interpol is extremely popular in Europe, not so much in the states, which just proves that Americans listen to crap. As a Senior at a big university going to parties all you here is that crap Ying Yang Twins and all that puffed up no talent acts. Stop blasting Soulja Boy in your tahoes

Not the best song to be played live... kind of slow, not that much music. Kind of the problem with Pressure Chief. Not a bad song, just not one of Cake's best.
