Eating on a Budget? Budget meals like breakfast, lunch and dinner don't have to be frozen processed foods or cheap fast foods. Hey Mr Wolf - just wanted to say thanks for posting this video. I've no need to eat on a tight budget - but, like everyone else right now, I'm wanting to make big meals that will last with limit ingredients - and this really seems to fit the bill - so I've used up the last of my rice and tinned tomatoes to make this. Thanks again for your timely videos - hope you and your fam keep safe.

I remember, as a child with 2 working parents, the old fashioned crock pot was a life saver. Mom would prep it at night and put it in the fridge. Pop the crock in and turn it on low before leaving in the morning, and we always had dinner ready as soon as we got home. Huge time and budget saver for working families, since we could use the cheap cuts of meat and have them turn out fork tender. It was also good for staggered schedules, since it could stay on warm for a few hours. These days, everyone wants an expensive 'Instant Pot', which is cool if you have the $$, but those are $50-$150, where the humble crock is often $20 or less. I picked up a 2qt manual for $10 a few weeks ago, perfect size for a single person with limited fridge/freezer space... and who is a hella lazy cook. 🤣

My Aunt would make Rice hamburger hot dish. It was a pound of hamburger, 1 cup of rice or so, a can of cream of mushroom soup, can of veggies or fresh, onion if you like, and can of mushrooms or fresh. After you fry the hamburger add all of that together and the water for the rice. It was a favorite for us kids. We always asked her to make it as my mom never cooked rice, or used cream of mushroom soup. The 70's.

You could make a series out of this one trip show casing all 5 (or hell go for broke ) 7 days worth of meals. Keep all meals down to the same 6 to 7 dollar range, and see what you come up with. Your videos have changed but, I think this is a change for the better. (maybe you can make a run or two to your own personal playground while make these videos) Just an idea.

Get a 2-3qt crock pot and/or a 6 cup rice cooker. You can probably get both for under $30. They make one pot cooking on a budget easy, you won't have to fight room or dorm mates for stove space and, using both, you can easily feed a whole study group while cramming for finals. 😉

Great video. This recipe is even cheaper. I've always got rice already in the pantry, but I buy the warehouse club-size bag of converted rice that'll last me a year. That cuts the rice cost per serving down to a rounding error and it tastes much better than regular rice. Onions and sausage are also cheaper where I am. Kroger has smoked sausage for $1.29 and it's actually not bad. Cooks up very well. Spices are a super bargain secret. Not only from Dollar Tree for a dollar each but many grocery chains now also have dollar spices. The right ones can make any bland meal into a flavor fiesta for basically almost no cost. I buy a ton of spices.

Hey man, loving the series so far as it reminds me of cooking with my roomates in college. I'm thankful those days are behind me, but also grateful that people haven't forgotten that there is a need to show how to turn just a few bucks into quite a few servings of food! I haven't seen you do this, but one of the tips we used to use in my family was to take the last couple crackers or chips or whatever salty snack we had and use those to make sauces or meats more flavorful. This works with pretty much anything. I used to get the wal-mart box of "cheesy snack crackers" or whatever they were called and we'd buy the cheap pasta sauce and use some crushed up crackers to make the sauces really savory and cheesy without needing to buy a bunch of extra cheese or seasoning. And I used to love taking that last handful of stale potato chips that no one would eat and rather than throwing them away, I'd grind it into powder to add to the pan when I would do chicken and frozen veggie stir fry. Might be a bit of nostalgia talking, but you could make enough for 5 meals or more for just 5 bucks and it'd be a tasty mix of rice, chicken, and veggies! And if you remembered to add a can or two of beans and maybe some eggs into that, you could feast for a week! Or more!

Things I added: 2 pats butter along with extra virgin olive oil to cook the sausage & veggies in, 2 cloves garlic, 1 stalk celery, 28 oz regular canned tomato, 3 slices pickled jalapenos diced. I had no creole seasoning so I used paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder.

One-skillet meals became my specialty back when money was super tight. When there's no money for food, a lot of times that means there's not a lot of cookware either. I remember even running out of dish soap and not having money to buy any. Yeah, the apartment had a dishwasher, but dishwasher detergent is way more expensive than liquid dish soap. Anyway. There are families in dire straits who would love to have a portion. Not everybody has the money to eat til they're full or until they puke( like some of these idiots) some who posted that it looked like vomit. There are folks/ children in some 3rd world countries who eat dirt & grass just to get rid of hunger pangs, no nutritional value at all. I don’t know how to say this but thank you man, I’ve come across a pretty rough patch in my and my mother’s life and most of my money goes to her treatment, so eating and paying rent is not easy, finding this channel was a gold mine of good ideas and now I can finally stop eating ramen and TV dinners. Thank you.

This looks better than a box of Zatarain's mixed rice. This is a great example of cooking for a family inexpensively and not having to resort to a box of overly processed food. It's extremely versatile; you can replace the sausage with just about any protein you have on hand. Well done.

I just came back from Tunisia. They have a cheap simple meal that's similar. Seasoned rice with diced peppers, onions, courgette (Zuccini?), chillies and turmeric, cooked in chicken stock, stirred then drumsticks or thighs are placed in the mixture, skin upwards. The whole dish goes in the oven at 200 C and you just walk away for 20-25 mins. The rice gets a bit of a crust and the chicken broils and is helped by the steaming to make it fast. That's a new, cheap and easy family meal for us!

If allowed (some dorms are strict about cooking), pick up a crock pot. I found a simple, 2 qt one for $10 at Walmart. Start it in the morning, and you can have dinner simmering away in your room when you get out of class, usually with leftovers. The slow cooking lets you use cheap, tough cuts of meat that come out fall apart tender. If you are living off campus, get a bigger one and refrigerate or freeze the leftovers. It's a great way to save money and time, both if which are in short supply when you are in school.

I know you do a lot of Dollar Tree meals too & we like the boxed Cajun meals with rice. All we do is add some kind of sausage, kielbasa, or whatever, even Lil' Smokies cut up & Voila! It is hearty & yummy! After seeing this video, I realize we could add the diced tomatoes or Rotel too. Sure makes a quick & easy dinner! Six boxes make quite a lot! Thanks! By the way, we enhance the boxed macaroni & cheese with onion & bacon. Cut up 12 -16 oz. of bacon into 1/2 " pieces & cook. You can make the bacon crisp or softer, as you like. Add a large diced onion, cook till tender& set aside. Add to cooked & drained macaroni. plus the powdered cheese packet. NOTE: We don't add any butter because of the bacon fat. Yum! We make at least 6 boxes 'cause we love it!

Watching this series, reminds me of dishes dish my mom used to make. My fav growing up was Shepard’s pie. Cut up leftover roast (usually procured from her parents) thrown into a roux with broth stirred in, some frozen peas and carrots, a couple shirts of ketchup, a few dashes Worcestershire, topped with boxed mashed potatoes. If we didn’t have a roast, ground meat was use, witch was my favorite way. If she was really splurging, she would use frozen tots.
