As an Egyptian you fell in the same mistakes most tourists fall into. Here is how to avoid them and have a much better experience. 1- Egypt has really old cities like really old. Especially cairo. So The closer you get to downtown the more congested in gets, the lower the income becomes, the more choatic and black market it gets. It’s the inverse of some western cities The more you move towards newer expansions the more 8 to 6 road lanes with crossings points you find the more you find modern buildings with better accommodations, quieter neighborhoods, fixed priced items, everyone dealing with receipts way less scammers and hagglers etc.. So for example cairo megalopolis has a 100km+ radius of cities strung together. You stay in the new cities like zayed, 6th October, new cairo, madinaty, sherouk, rehab etc... Do your shopping, eating (always ask for a printed receipt) and your walking there then go for sightseeing in the old parts then get back to the new parts again. Old parts are even stressful for lots of Egyptians who get accustomed to staying in new parts. 2- 1 star difference makes a-lot of difference in Egypt. So always try to go for 5 stars, try to avoid 3 stars completely. It’s more difference in staff and management mentality than accommodation but it’s quite a difference still. 3- use highways, ring roads and freeways to get to and from old parts of cairo. Longer distances but faster to get there. Always use uber. 4-you are getting what you are paying for so I wouldn’t recommend trying to cheap budget yourself in Egypt, cause you’ll get a bad experience and probably will end up being scammed paying the same. There are countries that you could cheap your way out through but not Egypt. Proper way to average out your expenses is converting by purchasing power AKA ppp. On average 7 Egyptian pounds buys you what $1 usd buys in the U.S or 1 eur buys you in a European country. If you stick to that formula you’d know wether you’re cheaping your self out or being scammed. Ofcourse that is not for everything but it will give you a solid indication of what you’re paying. 5 - after sight seeing, go for west/north coast, sharm el sheikh or Hurgada, shouthern sinai for the beach experience. Sharm el sheikh is a solid first. 6- overall try to to avoid low income and low middle income neighborhoods. Don’t buy stuff from tourist sights cause it’s a scam magnet basically for both foreigners and Egyptian tourists btw. 7-A proper tip is from 5% to 10% and you don’t have to tip if you don’t want to. Egyptians are extroverted not violent. They might do a little shouting etc.. but your safe. A stern no thank you and be on your way.

If you are Pyramids and want to move at your own pace, I definitely recommend hiring a private tour guide like we did. It wasn’t too expensive and we didn’t feel like we were in a rush and also they help you navigate through everything. We originally wanted to just Uber and figure it out ourselves but seeing how chaotic is was there with everyone trying to hustle you etc, we are so happy we had a guide with us.

Cairo is noisy, crowded and has lots of poverty. That's what makes Cairo Cairo. Why would you want it to be like somewhere else? If you want clean, tidy and well ordered go to a rich city in the USA. This is a busy, quite poor, Middle eastern city. What did you expect? People beg because they have nothing. I always give the street kid who loads my bag onto a bus a couple of Egyptian pounds- It's how they survive. I used to walk through the slums and be perfectly safe, even at night though. As for Dahab- I first went in 1995 with just a small rucksack and when it still had a 'hippy' vibe and slept on the beach for a few pounds a night. A lot of us did this back then. The place was full of great characters from all over the world. I suspect that now though, it has been spoilt by getting too big with grand hotels and far too full of annoying tourists just like Sharm was the last time I passed through. As for being driven around in a nice vehicle with air con, try an old Cairo taxi (after haggling for a price for half an hour) with plastic seats, in the middle of summer and the only air con is rolling down the window. People have become too soft.

How much should I budget for a driver to take me from Aswan to Abu Simbel return. I'm also thinking of hiring a driver to drive me from Aswan to Luxor stopping over at Edfu/Kom Ombo temples. Egypt I've found is the most difficult to get a clear idea of how much anything costs compared to other destinations.

Have you considered joining a Nile Cruise? That way you can visit Abu Simbel, Edfu, and Kom Ombo. Check out my Nile Cruise video which has all the prices and you can see all the sites that we visited. It’s hard to get prices unless you have a specific point person to help you, for us that was our hotel and we sorted all of that our once we arrived. If you want to plan this all ahead of time, you might want to use sites like Get Your Guide, Trip Advisor, Civitatis, etc and look for day trips. The prices are fair and you can read reviews from other travelers.

I made contact with a tour company via get a guide and they have given me some quotes on how much it will cost to drive compared to taking a cruise. I thing i would still stick to the land tours as they are cheaper and shorter in length. They suggested a sunset Felucca ride down the Nile in Aswan for a few hours. Keep producing these fantastic videos they are extremely useful for first time visitors to these locations.

It’s true. I use an Osmo Pocket to film so it’s quite small and discreet. I avoided filming people directly, women especially since it is a Muslim country (out of respect). I didn’t have any issues and the only places where I couldn’t film was inside one of the mosques I went to. I guess I can say filming was less painful than I thought it would be. If you have a large camera set up than it might be an issue (I assume).

Wondering why more people go to Morocco and South Africa, and even tunes. I think by 2030 you will change your mind about Egypt.

Why didn't you stay in front of the Pyramids $50 a night with full roof top breakfast and you went to crappy food shops, you really went to crappy places for tourist. Food better downtown, it looked terrible your tourist over priced food. You should try Camel, its delicious.

I totally agree. When I was planning for Cairo, I was deciding if we should stay in Giza and closer to the pyramids or in Cairo, thinking we would be more “central.” Anyway, it was a total mistake. The first night we met up with a friend who stayed in front of the pyramids for a very good price, amazing views, and the hotel was very cool. I’ll have to try camel next time 🫣
