Incredible movie, even though it's set in Egypt in the context of the most esteemed Islamic university in the world, the themes are globally relevant. It gives an experience of the potential corruption & infiltration of religious groups by government & ulterior interests in order to influence the population. There's also themes of ethical choices, family, sacrifice, exploitation, hope & the human condition. Great acting, suspenseful & visually intimate. Is religion the illegal arm of the government? A bold, daring, thought provoking philosophical film.

This did not and will not happen in Al-Azhar. This is inspired by the imagination of the writer of the fictional story... I was one of the students of Al-Azhar, by the way... I do not know why Sweden embraces everyone who wants to distort the Islamic religion.

You said it’s fictional, and fiction IS distortion.

From a non-Islamic perspective, I didn’t feel like it gave me any more negative thoughts in Islam. I even felt empathy and sympathy for characters who even had more extreme views. With that being said, no religion is above criticism in art and I’m not knowledgeable about politics in Egypt but it’s a shame this film is banned there.

It does not exclude the fact that the current Egypt government is trying to get control of Muslim scholars.
