Cafelat Robot - Testing impact of using paper filter to reduce channeling

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've noticed some channeling in Cafelat Robot extraction depending on pouring technique, so I decided to perform a test to see if channeling is reduced by using a paper filter under shower screen. I deliberately poured water in a fixed spot - off centered - and I checked how extraction looked like from filter bottom.
After that, I started using paper filter in all extractions and I've noticed significant improvements in the cup, specially in terms of repeatability.
I used Aeropress paper filter cut to size and pre wet it so it sticks to the screen shower.
About the water leak in the end of second extraction, I'm not sure if silicon gasket is worn. I think it is related to pressure being too high during extraction. I had to push really hard to extract that one. When grinding coarser, leakage didn't occur, but I need to do more tests on that.

Recommend dispersion tool and then consider grind adjustments

Hi. I'm a passing Cafelat robot user. I want to fix channeling, I made a heavy tamper that fits inside the ROBOT. The focus is on leveling by using a handless tamper design. As a result, deep tamping fixes channeling and improves extraction in light roasting coffee. I've also created a distribution tool, which is much better than nothing. It's a cone. You can control donut shape channeling and induce more central extraction. In this state, if you use paper filter together to control the crater caused by the falling water, you can expect better improvement.

I will keep experimenting, thanks for the video. I always get channeling in my Robot no matter what, I will give paper filter a try. Workflow : 1zpresso JX Pro 140 clicks to 160 clicks depending on bean, usually I get tasty shots on 150. RDT on beans before grinding (could this cause the coffee to clump together making channels? Need experiment) WDT a lot on the portafilter Tamp slightly, just make sure it's centered and level Press the screen firmly on coffee grounds. Pull afterwards, I always get around 1 unified stream and 1 drip spots, if unlucky I can get up to 5 drip spots with no single stream.

I don't think RDT have any negative impact in extraction. Which WDT tool do you use? I've found this to be crucial. I'm using the one from Jkim Makes, 3d printed plus acupunture needles.

I didn't experience too much channeling when using coffee ground at the roaster but now that I have a DF64 it can't make a shot longer than 10 seconds no matter what I do. Grinding finer doesn't help, grinding courser doesn't help. Any thoughts?

Try using at least 18g of coffee, use WDT, tamping it correctly and use the paper filter on top of the coffee puck. It should work!

I know it might be late, but try aligning your df64 springs and burrs. I hope this helps! Additionally, to improve consistency, season burrs with cheap dark beans.

Are you getting channeling even when using paper filter on top of the coffee puck? You may try to use WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique, Google it).

@@SantiagoLuz I still get channeling after using a paper filter on top. I used to use WDT a while back, but stopped since I didn't feel like I needed it. I will try it on the Robot. Do you not get channeling anymore? If not, what are you doing differently?

I always use WDT and paper filter on top. I'm grinding using Comandante. No more channeling after using both tricks.

@@roobios2 Yep, it's capable of grinding fine enough. I do use Red Clix, besides I don't think it is mandatory when using manual espresso machine. And I'm willing to adapt an electric drill to the Comandante as I'm tired of cranking it. It's not hard to turn the handle, but it takes a lot of turns to grind a dose for a shot.
